1 Octavius V. - #140, named for Octavius V. Catto, a black activist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was erected in 1929 at 30th and Saunders Streets in the eastern section of Camden. Catto School houses one section each of students in grades 1-4, a special needs self-contained class, and two sections of grade 5 students. The teachers at provide a quality education for the community's children by implementing strategies to foster a more positive attitude in the students toward their own personal images and toward the process of education to enable them to contribute substantially to society. The staff provides instruction based on individual student needs, strengths, and interests. The teachers implement various teaching approaches and research-based strategies to educate the children to the limits of their abilities. It is expected that the students will grow through improvement in conduct. Their attitudes toward learning will increase through greater parental involvement in the educational process. The staff works together for effective interpersonal skills. Curriculum Alignment and Instruction for Student Achievement: students will demonstrate the acquisition of a common core of knowledge in mathematics, communications arts, science, social studies, the arts, health and physical education, technology, and workplace readiness skills using school district initiatives and programs. The staff continues to improve professionally through various programs, such as district initiatives, as well as through their professional choices of educational training opportunities. Many staff members are enrolled in graduate programs to enhance their own development, as well as that of the students. The district offers on-going training and in-services for every level of personnel. Catto personnel have always taken advantage of these services.
