Thatcham where have we come from? In 1964 McKinsey s were asked by the BIA (now ABI) to make recommendations about reducing Motor claims costs in the UK. Their report was the catalyst for the Thatcham based research centre to be established. In 1964, following several years of losses, the British Insurance Association (now the ABI Association of British Insurers) contracted McKinsey & Co., the American management consultants, to investigate and make recommendations on the UK motor insurance market. The cost of the report, at that time 20,000, is equivalent to some 250,000 today. In 1965, the McKinsey report was issued and included a recommendation to develop a research centre to control claims costs and raise the standard of repair. After protracted committee discussions, the first Director of Research, Danny Gibbs, was appointed in In May 1969, the new centre was established in an empty, speculatively built warehouse in Colthrop Lane The BIA set up the research centre based on the expectation of it costing between 0.075% and 0.11% of UK GWP At today s rate that equates to 10.72M and 15.73M Much of the original insight and requirement remains current

Thatcham s major activities to reduce Members claims costs Group rating Vehicle Safety Vehicle Security Industry Standards Repair Research Repair Methods and Times Parts and Equipment Accreditation Training and Accreditation
What is Group Rating? 15KM/h (9mph), 40 offset angel barrier It is a system used to assess the insurance risk associated with vehicles on the UK road by means of a formula, which categorises risk on a scale of 1 to 50. It assesses factors such as Repair and Parts costs, Security features, Weight & Performance. This risk rating for each vehicle, at individual model level, is then used within underwriting by each insurer to assist in pricing each risk. Typically, the Group Rating factor makes up around 50% of the pricing assessment. The remaining 50% takes into account their proprietary claims data and the driver(s) risk factors Video
Benefits of Group Rating Influencing Design other typical design changes over the years have led to improved repair times and lower parts costs Shorter Chassis Leg Plastic non painted bolt on front panel More Accurate Underwriting Claims Cost Control Improved customer service Greater profitability C shape sub frame Deep bumper armature Theft loss reduction Accident Damage loss reduction Long bolt on crush can Premium inflation controlled, Faster, safe and reliable Repairs
Millions Vehicle Security Over the past 15 years, a security assessment has been an integral component of the Group Rating formula. This has driven significant savings to insurers by directly influencing the improvement in vehicle security. 600 ANNUAL COST TO INSURERS* FROM THEFT CLAIMS: PRIVATE CAR 1992 Alarm systems introduced 1993 Immobilisers introduced Level Cumulative Theft Saving since Billion 1994 Thatcham Security Team established 1995 New Vehicle Security Assessments commence Volume of stolen vehicles has reduced from 600k p.a. to 100k p.a. The UK is now seen as exemplar in reducing the costs of car crime
Thatcham s Telematics research Aim: Identify a minimum standard for telematic Event Data Recorders system performance to ensure that relevant data is captured to allow injury risk and damage severity assessment in the insurance claims process Outputs: 1. Report 2. EDR Standards published 3. 15 Reducing Personal Injury Claims Whiplash research Whiplash is the most frequently reported injury in motor vehicle crashes 10% of injuries are long term (+1 month) 1% of injuries are permanent Predominately occur following rear impact 432,000 cases annually in the UK 2 billion in claims costs 30%+ may be fraudulent Difficult to diagnose and to treat

What next for Thatcham? Thatcham will continue to research emerging vehicle technologies In addition to Telematics there are a range Intelligent Transport systems currently being developed, which may well emerge and become a key part of our future strategy We are already carrying our detailed repair assessments for emerging innovations such as electric and hybrid vehicles, high strength steels and aluminium bodywork Thatcham s aim is to new trends and advice on the opportunities and risks associated with new technologies The first fully licensed self-driven car a modified Toyota Prius won a special permit on Tuesday, the first of three applied for by Google, which allows it to be used on the state's roads, including the famous Las Vegas strip.
