8 FACTS about Road Risks 1 in 3 road traffic accidents involve an individual who is at work at the time. (DoT) Around 730,000 road accidents occur from driving which resulting in injury. (RoSPA). Approximately 20% of driving accidents are fatigue / tirednessrelated crashes (RoSPA). Grey Fleet account for between 3 5 million vehicles (Energy Savings Trust). Cost of At Work Crashes to Employers is 2.7 billion (BRAKE) Excessive Speed a factor in over 400 crashes 5% - (RoSPA) Road Casualties fell to 183,670, Car deaths - 2% (785), Pedestrian deaths - 5% (398), Cyclists KSI - 2% from 2012 to 109 Overall Road Deaths down by 2 % (1,713 or circa 15 Billion). The Lowest figure since records began in (DoT)

12 Basic Risk Management 10 Essential Elements Management policy (Area 1) 1. *Assign a senior manager with specific responsibility for managing driving at work activities. 2. Carry out DAW Risk Assessments & Implement a Health & Safety policy which incorporates a DAW policy. 3. Routinely undertake, record and act on the findings of risk assessments dealing with all aspects of driving at work including driver safety, vehicle safety and journey planning. 4. Ensure that every incident involving any vehicle driven on behalf of the company is recorded, investigated and that collective information is regularly analysed and action taken to reduce recurrence.

Provide a drivers' handbook that includes road safety guidance and sets out individual driver responsibilities, in support of the Company s policies and procedures, e.g. DAW policy, what to do in the event of an accident, vehicle checks, mobile phone policy, management contact details, etc. 6. Ensure that all employees driving on behalf of the company are initially vetted, inducted and regularly assessed, to establish that they are properly licenced, competent, suitably trained and medically fit to do so.

Ensure when choosing vehicles to be used on behalf of the company, that they are entirely suitable for their intended purpose and that the utmost importance is placed on safety features. (example on load security TRL) 8. Ensure that all vehicles used on behalf of the company are regularly inspected and strictly maintained using the manufacturer s recommended service schedules (and if applicable, in accordance with Operator Licence requirements).

Check whether a road journey is really necessary and encourage the use of alternative modes of communication / transport where this is practical. 10.Ensure that necessary journeys are scheduled to a realistic timetable and are planned to take into account the essential need for adequate rest periods. 17 Claims History Is Yours Good, Bad or Indifferent? Do you know how much Crashes are costing your business? How does your Claims Experience compare with other similar organisations? What % of your claims are At Fault? What s the cost of At Fault claims to your business? What s cost of TP Bodily Injury claims to your business? What can you do? Post Crash investigations Conduct Claims Analysis regularly Seek advice - Involve your Broker or Insurer Identify Trends, particularly around At Fault claims & act upon them.

19 Emerging Issues that effect your Business Organised Claims Fraud (Repudiation, Convictions and Aviva Successes) CFIT - Fraud Intelligence Team of the Year CFIT s work has secured 146 arrests and been featured in the BBC television series Claimed and Shamed. A highlighted investigation included the conviction of Masi Naqshbandi and Sabaoon Hillaman ringleaders of a 6.5m operation uncovered by Aviva. As a result of our investigations and industry co-operation the key perpetrators received sentences of 7 years and 4 years respectively. In 2014 AVIVA had a 100% at Court win rate with CCTV evidence and 72% at Court win rate with good evidence.
20 VRU s (Vulnerable Road Users) Pedestrians, Cyclists & Motor Cyclists Over 3,340 cyclists killed or seriously injured every year In 2013, 109 cyclists were killed, a slight decrease on 2012 (RoSPA) 20% of fatalities are due to collisions with LGV s Cycling being actively encouraged as a method of transport to work In London over 570,000 cycling journeys every day Main Causes of cycle / vehicle collisions are :- Drivers turning Left or near to junctions (75% of fatalities) Cyclists and drivers fail to allow enough space for each other Cyclists and drivers do not look properly and misjudge each others path or speed.
