Dr Patrick O Brien Group Director Strategic Business & Marketing MCS Kenny Our design capability in risers and advanced engineering is supported by an extensive in-house developed engineering analysis software suite including Flexcom, DeepRiser and PipeLay. Our Engineering Services covers four key service areas, namely: Riser Engineering, Riser Delivery Management, Drilling and Well Intervention Risers, and Advanced Subsea Engineering. Riser Engineering Our riser engineering capability is founded on over 25 years experience in the business. Our senior engineers understand how to find the right riser solution for any given floating vessel concept, environmental conditions, water depth and other technical and commercial criteria that might apply. Riser Delivery Management Across our organisation internationally we have a number of senior engineers and project managers with extensive subsea construction experience, particularly with riser supply and installation. We weave this experience into our overall riser configuration design and analysis capability to offer a comprehensive riser delivery management service to our clients. Drilling & Well Intervention Risers This service applies to drilling risers, and other risers used to intervene on a subsea well such as workover and completion risers. Advanced Subsea Engineering Here we apply our inherent advanced engineering analysis capabilities to find solutions to a variety of subsea engineering problems. This includes nonlinear finite element analysis of subsea hardware components, stability and buckling analysis of subsea pipelines, and structural analysis and design of various subsea structures. Our capability covers the whole range of potential riser solutions, and our design capability is supported by world leading, in-house developed, industry validated, engineering analysis software. We develop industry codes of practice for riser design and we are continuously involved in technology development which is internally and externally driven. Our naval architecture capability supports our riser design service, and includes vessel motions analysis, mooring design and, where appropriate, coupled riservessel-mooring analysis models. Essentially, we will manage the specification, supply, installation and commissioning of a riser system on behalf of our oil company client while working as part of the overall project team for the subsea development. Our service includes riser configuration design, dynamic riser analysis, determination of safe operational envelopes for extreme and fatigue seastate conditions, drift-off and disconnect scenarios and riser recoil analysis. Our objective is to support our clients in enabling them to maximise their riser uptime while operating safely. The service also includes static and dynamic analysis of various pipeline and subsea installation scenarios. MCS Kenny s Geotechnical Group offers expertise from the conventional subsea structure foundation and on-bottom pipeline-soil interaction analysis and design, to state-of-the-art FEA of the most complex soil structure problems.
6 06 Case Studies Case studies... Our riser and advanced engineering capabilities are demonstrated in projects spanning the globe. INPEX: Ichthys LNG Development Flexible Riser Pre-FEED and FEED Total: Egina Field Development, Offshore Nigeria EnQuest: Don South West & West Don Development & Thistle Platform Risers The Ichthys gas field is located in the Browse Basin, off the north-west coast of Western Australia, in 250 metres water depth. The estimated production rates are for 12.8 trillion cubic feet of gas, and 527 million barrels of condensate, to be produced over an operational life of more than 40 years. Gas from the Ichthys field will undergo preliminary processing at an offshore central processing facility (CPF). The CPF will gather and process gas from various production wells via extensive subsea infrastructure including infield flowlines, umbilicals and up to 25 flexible risers and dynamic umbilicals. MCS Kenny has provided flexible pipe engineering to Ichthys since the early conceptual phase, and has continued to support the project through the Pre-FEED and FEED stages. Our initial scope was to provide INPEX with direct technical expertise for the conceptual selection of the flexible riser system for this high pressure, high temperature gas development. MCS Kenny subsequently provided extensive Pre-FEED engineering support for the flexible and umbilical systems, including preparation of the flexible pipe specification, cost estimates and delivery schedules. As the project moved into FEED, MCS Kenny was awarded the scope to deliver the flexible riser design as part of the subsea FEED package performed by sister company J P Kenny, together with AMEC and Aker Solutions. MCS Kenny s scope included the design of the dynamic risers and umbilicals for both the CPF and FPSO. The Egina field was discovered in 2003 and is located offshore Nigeria within the Oil Mining Lease (OML), 200km from Port Harcourt and in water depths up to 1750m. The Greater Egina development consists of the Egina Main, Egina South and Preowei fields, with the current development only covering the Egina Main field. The Egina field is being developed by TOTAL Upstream Nigeria Ltd. MCS Kenny, alongside sister company J P Kenny and Nigerian company Dover Engineering, carried out the first comprehensive FEED, including FPSO and subsea systems, undertaken locally in Nigeria. The team of MCS Kenny, J P Kenny and Dover engineers worked more than 60,000 man-hours in-country on the project. The subsea scope of work included comprehensive design studies and engineering assessments, development of specifications, documentation and technology studies relating to the design of the umbilicals, flowlines, risers and the subsea production system. MCS Kenny was responsible for all aspects of the riser system, which is based on the use of a Steel Hybrid Riser (SHR) solution. In addition to developing a full set of specifications for the riser system, MCS Kenny carried out the design of the riser and its key components, including the buoyancy tanks. MCS Kenny was also responsible for the dynamic umbilicals and supported J P Kenny on the pipeline systems. The Don Southwest and West Don development is located in 170m water depth, 150km North East of the Shetland Islands in the North Sea. The fields were exploited as a subsea development and are being produced through a Floating Production Facility, (FPF), the Northern Producer. The produced oil and gas is exported via the Thistle Platform. MCS Kenny was responsible for the design of the entire riser system including the delivery management of seven flexible risers, one umbilical riser and three static umbilicals complete with associated ancillary equipment, including diverless bend stiffener connection systems. The delivery of the flexible risers and dynamic umbilical was a critical project activity due to the fast track nature of the project. Close management of the flexible and umbilical manufacturers by MCS Kenny was critical to ensure the riser system was designed correctly and delivered within a tight schedule. Following on from the successful completion of this project, MCS Kenny was given responsibility for designing the Thistle Platform riser system. The project lead-time was reduced as pre-existing risers remaining from the EnQuest Don Development were employed. By providing design and delivery capability, and working closely with the client and contractors, MCS Kenny reduced the number of interfaces and efficiently delivered the riser system.
7 Case Studies 07 Subsea Pipeline Arctic Location Stena Drilling: Drilling Study for 6,200ft Offshore Canada Independence Hub Gulf of Mexico MCS Kenny has developed for a client an advanced engineering methodology to analyse the impact of an iceberg on a trenched subsea pipeline at an arctic location. The methodology analyses the pipe loads and deformations caused by the floating iceberg in addition to the gouging of the seabed soil by the iceberg as it approaches the trenched pipeline. The advanced analysis methodology utilises the ABAQUS finite element program and is based on the pipeline and iceberg being modelled by Lagrangian-type finite element meshes that deform through an Eulerian soil finite element mesh. This coupled Eulerian- Lagrangian technique was adopted by MCS Kenny, and has proven to be a very effective means to simulate geometrically nonlinear pipe motions and induced stresses for the deforming pipeline as it interacts with a nonlinear soil-pipeline interface under loading from the iceberg. The work has been successfully delivered to the client, and elements of the modelling technique have been subsequently published at various international offshore conferences. Furthermore, through our participation in relevant joint industry initiatives on arctic technology, we expect this technique to form an important part of future subsea pipeline design for arctic locations. This case study exemplifies the advanced nature of our subsea engineering capability, which we have applied to a range of applications in the subsea arena including advanced engineering analysis of subsea components, engineering critical assessments for pipelines and risers, lateral and upheaval bucking of pipelines, and analysis of subsea jumpers and rigid spools within riser and subsea pipeline layouts. MCS Kenny were contracted by Stena Drilling to perform a detailed operational assessment of the Stena Carron for a wide range of drilling activities in a water depth of approximately 6,200ft in harsh environments offshore Canada. The Stena Carron is a modern dynamically positioned drillship capable of operating in water depths of up to 10,000ft and performing drilling operations in a wide range of harsh conditions all year round. The MCS Kenny workscope consisted of estimating vessel uptime statistics for a range of drilling activities including riser and casing running, drilling, standby, unlatch and retrieval operations. It included a detailed operability assessment to determine the allowable extreme operating envelopes for drilling, connected standby mode, storm hang-off, riser/bop running and retrieval and casing/ conductor running operations. An analysis of the riser recoil during an emergency unlatch scenario was also carried out to verify the suitability of the proposed stack-up. The green, amber and red watch circles for a vessel DP system failure drift-off scenario were assessed for comparison against Stena Drilling standard operating guidelines. MCS Kenny analysed and identified the riser and wellhead/conductor system weak-point during a drift-off scenario where the LMRP fails to unlatch. This involved calculating detailed riser, wellhead, conductor and casing loads during the drift-off event and determining the component that reaches first yield during drift-off. The work was performed in close collaboration with Stena Drilling engineers to achieve an effective and safe solution for the location in accordance with good operating practices. The Independence Hub is a semi-submersible platform situated in the Gulf of Mexico on Mississippi Canyon Block 920 in a water depth of 8000 feet. It is one of the deepest floating production facilities in the world, with the deepest steel catenary risers, ever installed. This landmark development involved several oil companies working in partnership and has enabled access to multiple ultra-deepwater natural gas and condensate discoveries which were previously untapped. Working for the eight operators in the field, MCS Kenny was responsible for verifying the front end engineering design (FEED) of the riser designs of all competing hull contractors. Atlantia Offshore was awarded the hull contract and MCS Kenny went on to provide detailed design of eleven initial Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs) and seven future SCRs. MCS Kenny also provided verification for all the umbilical risers, reporting directly to the operators with responsibility for this aspect of the project. Natural gas production started in July 2007 and the facility is capable of delivering 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day to consumers in the US.
8 08 Technology Technology developments MCS Kenny is at the forefront of subsea technology research establishing new industry standards, writing industry guidelines, managing joint industry projects and developing leading technology for our clients.
