2 UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM MOOC Massive Open Online Course Much Ado About Nothing: in Performance 2 27 March 2015 In March 2015 the University of Birmingham, in a unique collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company s Education Department and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, will be running a free online course exploring Much Ado About Nothing in Performance. Ideal for 16 to 19 year olds in full time education, this innovative four- week course will explore how the play would have been staged in Shakespeare s time; how it has been interpreted throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and how the 2014 RSC production of Much Ado About Nothing (Love s Labour s Won) brought the play to life for a modern audience. The areas of focus for the weeks will be: Week 1: Dr Nick Walton from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust will discuss original performance conditions, looking at how Much Ado about Nothing would have been staged in Shakespeare s time. Week 2: Dr Abigail Rokison from the Shakespeare Institute will look at the different ways in which the play has been interpreted throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Week 3: Christopher Luscombe, Director of the 2014 production of Love s Labour s Won, will explore the role of the director in staging a modern production. Week 4: Michelle Terry and Edward Bennett, who play Beatrice and Benedick in the 2014 production, will discuss their process as actors and how they bring the text to life for the stage. Hosted by Future Learn, this massive open online course (MOOC) is freely accessible to anyone who wishes to register, both in the UK and abroad. The MOOC will feature an exclusive range of video and audio content and is perfect for studying in the classroom, at home or as part of a group. It is an excellent complement to watching the production in live performance, at a cinema or in a UK school as part of the RSC S Schools Broadcast series. Register for the broadcast of Much Ado About Nothing (Love s Labour s Won) at: onscreen.rsc.org.uk/education. Registration for the MOOC is now open. 5 EASTER AND HALF TERM TOURS AND TALKS: INTRODUCING SCIENCES Monday 16 February 2015 During the February half term for most UK schools, the University is offering a programme of 'Introducing Oxford' talks and tours for prospective students. The visits provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn about our undergraduate courses, the college system and how to apply. Teaching staff will be present to talk about their courses and to answer questions. Events are scheduled so that you can attend one or two subject talks in the morning and visit one or two colleges in the afternoon, guided by admissions staff or students. Please note this is not a full open day. Further information at: ADVIZA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Please see the attached school careers adviser newsletter that contains a wide range of useful information. STUDENTS DRIVING TO SCHOOL If you drive to school, please ensure that you have registered your car details with Ms Triggs in the Sixth Form Office. Handycross Sports Centre has informed us today that as of 11/2/15 JHGS students will no longer be able to use the sports centre car park due to more of the car park being taken up as part of the new development. Please note that students may not park on the school site, but should park responsibly in the local area. Please be advised that the School is trying to work out an alternative arrangement for students who drive to school. GOING OFF SITE A reminder on the rules of going off site for 6th form. Lower 6th students are permitted to leave the premises during lunchtime only. The U6 will be allowed out during study periods but must observe the following rules, which are vital in order for our evacuation procedures to work effectively. Any breach of these will result in immediate suspension of privileges: 1. Students must sign out in the correct folder at Reception whenever they leave the school site. You must complete all details first name, last name, form, date and time legibly and sign in on your return. 2. You must not sign in/out on behalf of someone else. 3. You are allowed out for a maximum of one hour and must be in school for the whole of P5. 4. If you need to leave school because you are ill, you must see the Student Welfare Officer or if she is not available, your Head of Year to seek permission. You cannot just sign out. 5. You should only sign in late or sign out for medical or other appointments if notification has already been provided by , phone or letter to Mrs Triggs in the Sixth Form Office. If notification has been received, it will be recorded on your record so that the Receptionists or other staff can check. 6. On Wednesday afternoons, you are allowed to leave school at 1.35 pm as long as you have no duties or other commitments in school.

6 It is important that your behaviour out of school is exemplary. Any complaints from members of the public will be taken seriously and will result in the removal of privileges.
