2 Dear Parishioners, Prophet Isaiah is speaking to us this week about fear Be strong, fear not! We encounter situations in our lives that are difficult to deal with. Similarly in the life of the pastor, there are times when I need to make decisions on my own, however, most of the time I rely on the wisdom and guidance of the people I work with as well as the parishioners. This week, I would like to introduce the members of our Parish Council. These parishioners voluntarily meet every month to discuss the needs, priorities and goals so we can all direct and facilitate the Mission of Jesus Christ as it is lived out in St. Thomas Becket parish. If you wish, you may reach any member of the council at: stthomasbecket@stbmp.org or you can speak with them when you see them around. I would also like to say thank you to all the past members of the PPC for their dedicated service and to all current members who have accepted the invitation to serve our faith community. Podobnie w życiu proboszcza, są chwile kiedy muszę podjąć decyzje na własną rękę, jednak większość razy mogę polegać na wiedzy i wskazówki ludzi, z którymi pracuję jak również i parafian. W tym tygodniu pragnę przedstawić członków naszej Rady Parafialnej. Ci parafianie dobrowolnie spotykają się w każdym miesiącu aby omówić potrzeby i cele naszej parafii i przez to wszyscy razem kierujemy i wypełniamy Misje Jezusa Chrystusa. Serdecznie dziękuję wszystkim dotychczasowym członkom Rady Parafialnej za ich posługę jak również obecnym członkom, którzy przyjęli zaproszenie by służyć naszej parafialnej wspólnocie. Deacon Tony Jannotta has been serving St. Thomas Becket since He was trained and ordained in Tulsa Oklahoma in Tony and his wife od 50 years also served in Dallas Texas, Washington DC and Naples Florida. Tony does RCIA, Parish Transformation, Baptism Prep, PPC and other stuff. They have 2 children, 3 grandchildren and a hermit crab. Christine Karpierz, her husband Roman and daughters Pam and Anita moved to Mt. Prospect in summer of 1996, bought a house and right away became members of St. Thomas Becket. Christine has volunteered for the parish picnic for about 4 years, part of the 40 anniversary banquet committee, Fish Fry and other events through the years. Coming to church makes me feel closer to my deceased mother. I try and lead the life of a good Christian with a strong spirituality that I lean on and hold on to in times of need. Bob and Gloria Konkey have been married for over 42 years and have a son and daughter. They have six grandchildren. They have been members of STB for over 30 years and received the Christifideles Award in Bob is involved in the following ministries: PPC, Usher, Greeter, EM, Sacristan, SPRED, Bereavement, Becket 500, Maintenance Committee, and various Men's Club and parish functions. Gloria is an active member of the following ministries here at STB: PPC, a Deanery rep for the PPC, EM, Sacristan, SPRED, Bereavement, Becket 500, Women's Guild, Spiritual Life Commission, and many other parish functions. She was the parish Woman of the Year in Whenever there is a parish event, both Bob and Gloria will be there to lend a helping hand. Jo Anne Kudla has been a member of St. Thomas Becket for close to 30 years. She has 2 children who are now adults. Over the years Jo Anne has been involved in various ministries including Playgroup, Peace and Justice, Women s Guild, Sacristans, Parish Transformation and Parish Pastoral Council. I enjoy the kindness and generosity of the people here and feel fortunate to pray and work with everyone. 2 l Welcome to St. Thomas Becket Catholic Community

3 Joanna Kuliga and her husband Roman joined St. Thomas Becket Parish about 14 years ago. Both their daughters Vanessa and Abigail were baptized here by Fr. Ed. Her involvement in the parish began in 2007 when the Children s Choir - SCHOLA was formed. For the past seven years she had worked with a group of wonderful boys and girls who devoted their time and talents to singing to God. St. Augustine said, He who sings prays twice. I m delighted to join the Parish Council to help our church grow spiritually and intellectually. Mary Kulikowski and family became parishioners of St. Thomas Becket in February of Mary first served on the Parish Council in the 80 s for several years. After a brief hiatus from the council she once again became an active PPC member during the late 90 s and through today. Mary is also a representative to the Archdiocesan Vicariate Council, a Lector, an Usher and a very active member of the Women s Guild. In 2009 my husband Mary and Al received the Archdiocese Christifideles Award as reps for STB. Mary has been married to Allan for 50 years, have three adult children and 7 grandchildren. She s a Registered Nurse for 52 years, a Nurse Practitioner for 28 of those, retired 3 times but is still working part time as a consultant for Developmentally Disabled/Mentally Ill Adults residing in Community group Homes. I enjoy being an active participant at STB where I feel like I am part of a large family who just never seem to run out of spirituality, faith, ideas, social interactions and just belonging to a Christian Working Church. Terry Lewand and her husband Joe have been members of St. Thomas Becket since 1978, having moved to Mt. Prospect from St. John Brebeuf Parish in Niles. They have been married for 50 years and have three grown sons and are blessed with 9 beautiful grandchildren. Over the years at this parish she has been active in many ministries: Choir, Women's Guild member, Hospitality, Parish Pastoral Council for 2 terms, serving currently as PPC secretary for 5 years; fundraising committee for 40th Anniversary, Becket 500 raffle committee, and recently part of the Picnic committee. I have enjoyed being involved in this parish over all these years, and have found many treasured friends in our community through my involvement at St. Thomas Becket. I hope to remain an active part of my parish in thanksgiving for all God's blessings bestowed upon my family. Gail McGeever and her husband Pat have been parishioners of St. Thomas Becket for nearly 20 years. Gail is proud of being a new member of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). She teaches second grade at St. Robert Bellarmine in Jefferson Park, she strives to guide and teach students the importance of seeking and accepting God in their daily lives through their Holy Sacraments and within their Catholic Education. Gail is a Minister of Care, was part of the Parish Transformation Team, and a Eucharistic Minister. I volunteer because St. Thomas is our family and I know that it takes everyone doing something to make a family run smoothly. I chose the Parish Council because I am excited about the great things happening at St. Thomas and wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to get more deeply involved in the spiritual and physical growth of our church. Jeff Prostko joined parish council in Fall He has been a member of the parish since 1998 and is a Catechist, Lector, MANNA coordinator and volunteers in other church activities. He's been married over 26 years to Laura and they have two daughters, Sarah and Rachel. Maria Theisen came to US with two teenage girls in late 80's. In 2001 she moved to Mount Prospect and since then has been a parishioner of St. Thomas Becket. In 2013 she became an active member in our parish helping in a variety of parish functions and fundraisers. This past April Maria became a grandma for the very first time to the beautiful Emma Julia. 4 On Monday, September 7, 2014 we will celebrate Labor Day with a special Mass at 9am. All Are Welcome. 10 TO REGISTER IN OUR PARISH We welcome you to the St. Thomas Becket Faith Community. If you would like to officially join our parish please stop by any time during open hours at the parish office to register. BAPTISMS In order to prepare for their child s Baptism, parents are asked to attend Baptismal Preparation. Sessions in Polish are held on the first Sunday of each month in Polish at 8:45 am in the Rectory. Sessions in English are by appointment. Please call the rectory at least 1 month in advance to make arrangements. Baptism is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of the month in English. Baptisms in Polish take place on the 2nd Sunday and the 4th Saturday of each month please check the availability of dates with the parish office first. WEDDINGS Couples preparing for marriage should make an appointment to meet with the pastor to set their wedding date before they commit themselves to a date for a banquet hall. This appointment must be made at least six months before their wedding date. Couples are required to participate in Marriage Preparation Sessions (PreCana), which are available either through the Archdiocese or our own Marriage Prep program. Weddings are celebrated on Fridays and Saturdays. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE Friday: 6:15pm-6:45pm, Saturday: 3:30-4:15pm or by appointment at the rectory anytime. First Fridays of the month: 5:30pm-6:45pm CARE OF THE SICK There are times that St. Thomas Becket s Parish is unaware that one of its members may be ill at home or in the hospital. If this applies to anyone in your family or circle of friends and you would like them prayed for, visited or to receive communion, please contact the Rectory. One of the most important principles of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. Four encyclicals address this foundational social teaching: "Rerum Novarum" (1891) by Leo XIII, "Quadragesimo Anno" (1931) by Pius XI, "Laborem Exercens" (1981) and "Centesimus Annus" (1991) by John Paul II. They address both the theology and dignity of work. In Genesis, God takes the initiative in creating the world, calling forth human beings to be faithful stewards of creation. We are thus formed to share in God's continuing creative activity by partnering with God in finishing the world, helping bring it to completion and fulfillment. From this perspective, work can be spiritually understood in terms of sharing in God's ongoing activity to build, create, and transform the world. Human beings are co-creators with God. This vocation demands selfdiscipline. Besides an exercise in self-discipline, work is also the means by which we develop and fulfill ourselves. In work, we shape the world and our environment. Through work, we also shape ourselves. Pope John Paul II summarized this point in "Laborem Exercens" #6, "the value of work is not primarily the kind of work being done, but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person."
