3 ImagePro Deployment Manager Overview ImagePro is a software product for building and deploying software images to Palm OS based devices marketed by Symbol Technologies Inc. The ImagePro product loads Flash memory and/or RAM memory on devices with the selected Palm OS, and the selected application programs. Each enterprise or developer can customize the Symbol device load to their unique requirements. With ImagePro, enterprise customers can build standard enterprise Symbol device software images. The standard enterprise images can be loaded in mass at a central site, or the images can be distributed to their device users via the enterprise PC network. The users can easily load the Symbol devices with the corporate image via a HotSync type of process. Enterprise Symbol Device Deployment Requirements When an enterprise decides to deploy Symbol devices, they have several requirements that must be met. Those requirements include the following: A manageable process for the initial distribution of the Symbol devices and the custom software (applications and possibly custom Palm OS) that is to be loaded A manageable process to provide updates to the company Symbol device users when there is a desired update to the Palm OS, or to one or more applications A very limited number of standard enterprise Symbol software images, so that the central enterprise support requirements are minimized A process for enterprise users to retrieve and install the new enterprise Symbol device images without enterprise central support involvement Program safety on the Symbol devices (programs installed in non-volatile Flash memory) so that in case of a Symbol device hard reset, the enterprise software will still be available on the Symbol device ImagePro provides functions to assist in each of the above requirements. Symbol Flash Memory Software Suite Symbol Technologies offers a suite of Software Products that let customer applications utilize the unused non-volatile flash memory on SPT (Palm OS based) devices. The extracted files are used as input to the ImagePro Builder. RAM Extractor, to extract a complete model RAM software imaged. The extracted RAM image file is used as input to the Builder to build a combined Flash/RAM image, or as input to the Multiple Loader or to the Installer to load a RAM-only image. Builder, to build a Flash or Flash+RAM image. Multiple Loader, for central site staff to load an images to up to 32 SPT devices concurrently from a single PC. Installer, for users in the field to load new images from their PC to a Symbol device. Build Enterprise Symbol Image Files Using ImagePro, the enterprise central support personnel can build and test their enterprise Symbol device software images. The enterprise central support staff builds the image by using the ImagePro Builder (see the primary Builder screen below) to do the following: Select the OS components (programs and databases) to be loaded to the Palm OS Flash area Select the additional applications and databases to be loaded to the User Flash Area Select the RAM image (if any) to be loaded 2002 HandEra 6

7 Select the file name for the enterprise image to be built Click Build to create the new enterprise Symbol Flash image ImagePro Builder Screen The OS image file to be loaded to Flash memory can be either a Standard Palm OS, or a Custom OS supplied by the customer/developer. Custom application programs can also be loaded in the OS part of Flash memory. Standard Palm OS applications, such as expense, can also be deleted or replaced via this selection process. The RAM image (if any) can contain any Palm OS-based application program and/or database. User Load of Enterprise Image Once the enterprise central staff has defined and built the standard enterprise Symbol device images, those images can be loaded to devices at the central site using the ImagePro Multiple loader. Alternatively, the images can be distributed to the enterprise field personnel via the enterprise PC network HandEra 7

8 The Multiple Loader provides a tool for central site staff to load many devices with the same software image in a short time. The ImagePro Multiple Loader can load up to 32 devices in about 10 minutes (1.3MB image). If the image is to be loaded to the Symbol device by the user in the field, the ImagePro Installer provides a simple process to load the new image. The ImagePro Installer can load a combined Flash/RAM image, thus providing a complete new device software load HandEra 8

9 ImagePro Multiple Loader The ImagePro Multiple Loader feature is provided for loading large quantities of Symbol devices in a short time. The Multiple Loader feature can concurrently load up to 32 Symbol devices from a single PC with an ImagePro created software image in about 10 minutes (based on a 1.3MB image). The ImagePro Multiple Loader can load both Flash memory software images and RAM memory software images. ImagePro Multiple Loader Screen Symbol Device Flash Architecture Symbol Flash technology allows developers to load application programs to the User Flash area of Symbol devices. This Flash area is unused by the Palm OS components HandEra 9

10 The entire Palm OS Flash area must be reloaded as an entity. However, the programs and databases loaded to the User Flash area can be individually replaced using either the Symbol FlashPro program, or using the Symbol InstallPro application installation tool. Symbol Device Memory Architecture ImagePro Benefits ImagePro provides many benefits to enterprises and VARs deploying Symbol devices. The benefits realized are summarized below. 11 Supported ImagePro SPT Devices And Palm OS Releases ImagePro can be used to download Flash and/or RAM image files to devices using a PC running Windows 95, 98, NT or The Symbol SPT devices ImagePro supports include: Model Palm OS Available User Flash Memory On Device With 4MB Flash K 18XX K to 1200K Flash Chips Supported Atmel AMD Fujitsu Mitsubishi ST Intel Toshiba Summary ImagePro is the first generally available facility that allows an enterprise or developer to completely determine the makeup of the OS and the applications on Symbol devices. This is a major step forward in Symbol device manageability for enterprises. Enterprise customers can build and test a few Symbol device images for their field personnel. The field personnel can then easily load the new enterprise Symbol image to their Symbol device. Or the central site can load all devices in mass and ship out the loaded devices to the users HandEra 11
