4 Introduction Welcome to S.O.S Backup Manager, the instrument that enables the remote management of licensed S.O.S Backup products, which create automatic security backups of servers and clients. In addition, as part of its main features, S.O.S Backup Manager: - manages a set number of licenses; - creates backup jobs on the server to which it s connected; - edits backup jobs on the server to which it s connected; - creates backups of the server to which it s connected; - restores backups of the server to which it s connected; - substitutes the jobs and configurations of other servers with those of the server to which it s connected. With S.O.S Backup Manager, you can remotely program and implement your backup schedule through the creation of backup jobs. Each job brings together a set of data to be backed up and the necessary information to do so what data, when to carry out the task, and by what means. These jobs can be created and modified through S.O.S Backup Manager or any other licensed S.O.S Backup product (be sure to check your documentation to verify which product you own). Necessary configuration: a PC with 50 MB of free disk space, 128 MB of RAM memory, and Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7. This document explains how to use S.O.S Backup Manager. The program also comes with an extensive online help system, which can be accessed by pressing F1. In addition, Virtos provides a technical support staff; the following section details how to enter in contact with them.

7 1 Notes Notes on the documentation This manual describes the characteristics of only S.O.S Backup Manager. Explanations of the other S.O.S Backup products can be read in their respective documentation. Notes on the connection S.O.S Backup Manager can connect only to other S.O.S Backup products that are of the same version as the Manager itself. Therefore, updating your copy of S.O.S Backup Manager will mean updating all of your other S.O.S Backup licenses as well. Please note that when you use S.O.S Backup Manager to define backup sources and destinations, the program will show the network neighborhood of the computer on which the Manager is installed. This network neighborhood might not be the same one as on the remote server to which the Manager connects. Please bear this in mind when defining backup sources and destinations. S.O.S Backup cannot be used while connected to S.O.S Backup Manager. You can modify the tasks according only to the existing abilities of each S.O.S Backup product (for example, S.O.S Backup StandardNet cannot select tapes as its destination).

8 2 Interface The left side of the main S.O.S Backup Manager window shows the registered remote servers that have installed a S.O.S Backup product. A line visually represents each registered server. The right side of the main S.O.S Backup Manager window shows the configured jobs on the selected remote server. Each backup job is represented visually by an object an icon or a line in the same way that Windows Explorer shows files. You can define how the jobs are shown and their order in the View menu. The window s upper left menu shows the Manager s most used commands: Add: add, edit, and delete remote servers that have administrable S.O.S Backup licenses (that are of the same version as the Manager). When you add or edit a remote server, a window will appear in which to modify its configurations.

9 INTERFACE 3 Name: a name to identify the remote server in S.O.S Backup Manager. IP/Host: the remote server s IP/Host on the network. If the local area network uses fixed IP addresses, type the remote server s IP. If the network uses dynamic IP addresses, type the host name (so as to safeguard against the changes in IP). Port: the network port number used to access the remote server. Connect to a server: connects to the selected server and, on the right side of the main window, shows the server s configurations and jobs. In this window you can view, create, delete and change these configurations, as well as make and restore backups. So long as the connection is maintained, the accessed server will not be able to use its copy of S.O.S Backup. Save jobs/configurations on the server: saves the changes made to the jobs and configurations on the remote server the Manager is currently connected to. Save jobs/configurations on other servers: displays a window where you can choose to which remote servers to send all the jobs and configurations programmed on the server you are currently connected to. Disconnect: disconnects from the selected server, freeing it to use its copy of S.O.S Backup.
