Co-requisite: BSC2085 Class Website: BSC2085LAB.YOLASITE.COM I. COURSE DESCRITION BSC 2085L is a course of a laboratory sessions and seminars based upon Fundamentals of UMAN ANATOMY & YSIOLOGY by Frederic. Martín textbook (ten edition), and UMAN ANATOMY and YSIOLOGY I (BSC 2085L) Laboratory Manual. In this laboratory course, the student will learn to apply the concepts covered in BSC2085 as it pertains to structure and function of the human body from an experiential approach. The BSC-2085L consists of 1 hour and 40 minutes weekly class session. The first 15 minutes of the class are dedicated to the administration of quizzes, review of previous quizzes, and to answer any of your questions should one arise. During the first 30 min. interval of class, principles of anatomy and physiology that accompany the day s lab exercise will be explained. The course will lean heavily on these references and on the ower oint Lectures/Outlines the instructor will send you via , prior to each lab session. These ower oint lectures/outlines are focused on the course competencies for each topic/chapter and are therefore, a good guide to study the topics and to prepare for your evaluations. Reading/reviewing the Lab Manual is also strongly advised. For the remainder of the class time, you are expected to work in groups with the models, visual aids, and complete given exercises which are located in your lab manuals. Stephanie Barrientos / BSC 2085L Anatomy & hysiology I Lab
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to complete laboratory exercises, practice with models, charts, and other imaging resources to reinforce the topics covered in BSC Students will learn what anatomy deals with and its different divisions, as well as new vocabulary related with this science. 2. Students will be able to describe anatomical position and identify anatomical landmarks of the body, as well as the anatomical planes. 3. Recognition of the regions in which the abdomen is divided for anatomical study and organs related to those regions. 4. Get a general idea about the different systems of the human body and where those organs are located. 5. Learn the division of the skeleton in axial and appendicular, and the bones that form each one, as well as the main bone markings. 6. Identification of isolated bones and bones attached to the skeleton. 7. Study the structure of long, flat, and some irregular bones in a summarized way. 8. Identification of muscles in groups and independently, as well as location and the most general function. 9. The students will review the embryonic development of the nervous system and how it relates to the structures in the adult person. 10. Identification of structures in the brain and the spinal cord, as well as the main functions. 11. At the end of the course, the students will have a more complete and appropriate understanding about how to correlate the structures on models with the real human body. III. CLASS REQUIREMENTS Texbook Requirements - Laboratory Manual for Anatomy & hysiology, Michael G. Wood. 2 nd Custom Edition for Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus. NOTE: YOU MUST BRING TIS MANUAL TO EVERY LAB SESSION. Attendance & articipation Students are expected to attend class sessions regularly. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain notes and handouts from classmates if he/she misses a class session. A student must attend minimum 70% of a class/lab session time (aproximately 95 minutes on summer courses) to be considered present on that day. Attendance may be assessed at the time of class start and at the end of the session. Stephanie Barrientos / BSC 2085L Anatomy & hysiology I Lab
Once a student accumulates three (3) unexcused absences, at whichever point of the course calendar, he/she will be removed from the class roster and won t be able to complete the course. TIS WILL BE A FINAL DECISION. Absences will be excused only with a signed note from a physician certifying illness on the missed date. Emergencies must be documented in writing and must consist of true major force reasons to miss class, such as sudden illness requiring a doctor s emergency visit or hospitalization, death in the family, or college-excused events (which must be approved ahead of time). Students who are consistently absent and have not made attempts to communicate with the professor will be purged from the class roll in accordance to the academic and administrative calendar. As many of the laboratory exercises are done in large groups, students who show disruptive behavior, leave early, or in any way penalize the group, will be assessed negative points at the discretion of the instructor. These points will be deducted from the attendance and participation grade. Remember, if you are absent, you are not participating. If you are disrupting the class or showing inappropriate behavior among the members or you group, you are not participating. Your performance in this lab course will be dependent on your attendance to all lab sessions scheduled during the semester. erfect attendance, (no absences, no tardies, no early departures): FIVE (5) extra points toward the Final Grade. abitual tardiness and leaving the class session early are considered inappropriate behavior and will have a negative effect in your evaluation. As per the Biology ealth and Wellness Department policy, students are entitled to ONE OVERRIDE ER STUDENT ER CLASS ER SEMESTER, when you have been officially dropped from the class. Assignments & Coursework Lab Worksheets: The completed lab worksheets are worth 10% of your final grade. Many laboratory exercises are done in large groups. Each student in the group is responsible to learn not only the lab activities assigned to him/her, but also those assigned to other members of the group as well because any part of the material studied could be assessed on quizzes or testes. In the case the additional time required for the student to complete specific assignment, one should make an arrangement with the instructor. Obtaining class notes and handouts is your responsibility should you miss a class for any reason. Quizzes: The quizzes will be worth 30% of your final grade. Each quiz is worth 10 points. All quizzes will be administered at the beginning of the regularly scheduled lab periods. Quizzes will be administered as scheduled. Quizzes will be administered during the first minutes of the scheduled lab period. Therefore, if you arrive late to class, you will not be allowed to make up the quiz for that particular date. The quizzes will cover previous lab topics. Stephanie Barrientos / BSC 2085L Anatomy & hysiology I Lab
lease note: TERE WILL BE NO MAKE-U QUIZZES if the student cannot prove he/she had a strong reason to justify his/her not taking the quiz on the scheduled day. The instructor has the right to decide if a student may or may not make up a quiz. Therefore, attendance to each exam or quiz (on time) is absolutely mandatory. Furthermore, if you leave the classroom early or immediately after the quiz/exam, the instructor will consider you absent for that lab period and your quiz/exam will be graded 0. The quizzes consist of multiple choices, fill in the blanks, matching, and/or diagram questions to identify structures, and they will assess material covered in lab and in the lab manual. Any extra credit points (if assigned by the instructor) will be earned through additional exam questions added to each quiz, or in other written assignments. Any part of the text assigned in the lab manual can be evaluated on quizzes. Students are responsible for studying every day so that they can be ready to take quizzes when scheduled. racticum Exams: There will be three comprehensive practicum exams throughout the course of the semester. Each practicum will be worth 20% of your final grade and will require you to make use of the specimens/models in front of you to answer questions about lab topics and Anatomy & hysiology principles. IV. GRADING OLICY Lab Worksheets: Quizzes: 10% of the Final Grade. 30% of the Final Grade. One grade, the lowest, will be dropped. One (1) missed quiz will be considered the lowest grade to be dropped; all other missed quizzes will be graded zero (0) and will apply for the calculation of the student s quizzes average. racticum Exams (3): 60% of the Final Grade. Each practicum exam represents 20% of the Final Grade. A missed practicum exam will be graded 0. No racticum exam grade will be dropped. Grading Criteria: A: 90 to 100, B: 80 to 89, C: 70 to 79, D: 60 to 69, F: 59 or under. Incomplete Grades: Incomplete (i) grades will be given in consultation with the student and upon agreement of the instructor only when extenuating circumstances have prevented the student from completing the course. In order to be considered for an I, a student must have successfully completed a minimum of one-half the work in the course with a minimum grade of C or better. Stephanie Barrientos / BSC 2085L Anatomy & hysiology I Lab
Note: The Incomplete (I) grades must be completed in a time agreed upon between the instructor and the student. If not completed by the agreed upon time, the incomplete (I) grade becomes an F. If the student is facing problems that eventually will force him/her to have an incomplete (I) grade, the student MUST talk with the instructor in order to discuss this possibility. The instructor will analyze the situation and will make the final decision. This agreement will be made between both the student and the instructor by signing an official document. Withdrawals: The instructor is not required to withdraw/drop students from the course. It is the student s responsibility to determine his/her status in the course at all time. V. LABORATORY OLICIES Student articipation Students are expected to be prepared before the lab sessions by completing all reading assignments for that particular class date. At the beginning of the laboratory period, the instructor will explain what you are to do so that you can complete the exercise(s) on your own. lease pay attention and ask questions if you are confused. The instructor will not do the exercises assigned on a particular date. Not reading your laboratory manual/test book will waste valuable time for you, fellow students, and the instructor. Do not waste time! The semester will be over before you know it! Laboratory will begin on time. The instructor only has to be here during regularly scheduled laboratory hours. Students will also be responsible for cleaning up after lab. Therefore, make sure your schedule permits for activities occurring outside your regular lab period. This laboratory requires extra time and effort on your part in order to make good progress. Be flexible and able and willing to go the extra mile to do well. Students should bring the lab manuals to class. Laptop computers are allowed only if used to take notes; video recording devices are not permitted in the lab classroom. Disruptive behavior will affect your grade. Resources Every weekend the new oweroint slides for the week s coming lab session will be posted. You should review the slides/other posted sources prior to coming to class so that you are familiar with the topic at hand. Also, please make sure to make use of office hours to come and ask any questions! Academic onesty Cheating/lagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty will NOT be tolerated and will be dealt with to the fullest extent, according to the college regulations. You can access all the information and regulations concerning student s rights and responsibilities going through the following link: Stephanie Barrientos / BSC 2085L Anatomy & hysiology I Lab
