Peter and Sonny were on an early Saturday morning photo shoot when Peter found and photographed this image from the roof of the parking garage. A beautiful portrayal of the old and the new with subtle warm sunrise lighting.

5 Jack kienast Jack was born and raised in Bellingham and attended Bellingham public schools. After some time at the University of Puget Sound, he finished his college years at Western Washington University. He has recently retired from 35 years working for Whatcom County Parks. He enjoyed his career in Parks, especially the opportunity to independently organize and carry out my responsibilities. A broad range of activities over the years kept the interest and job challenges at a high level. Jack has enjoyed photography since his first Kodak Brownie days at 7 or 8 years of age. Photography has remained a lifelong interest, including photo classes and work on the annual and newspapers in high school and college, and darkroom work and photo opportunities during three years with the U. S. Army stationed on various bases in the U. S. and Europe. He has studied photography with local photographer, Lee Mann, attended workshops with award-winning sports photographer Dave Black, and adventure photographer Tom Bols. He has also attended the Photography at the Summit Seminars at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. Photography engages me in the kinds of hands on learning experiences I enjoy, initially in the darkroom, and more recently processing images in Photoshop. I like learning about new equipment and technologies, but in the end it still comes down to the ability of the photographer to capture and reproduce the image in a meaningful way, regardless of the equipment or technology used, states Jack. During the past five years, Jack has become involved in the Bellingham Photo Club and the Mt. Baker Camera Club. This has provided an added outlet for ongoing photo learning and activities with others who share this interest. Jack finds he especially enjoys landscape photography, and has noticed there are mountains or water in most of those landscape images. When asked what photography has added to his life, he gazed out the window at the view of Bellingham Bay from the coffee shop in Boulevard Park and said, Peace of mind and enjoyment. What more could anyone want! 5

7 A Note from the President In this newsletter we have some dates listed pertaining to upcoming meetings. One of those dates listed is our annual Photo-of-the-Year dinner, and I wanted to pass along some information about this event. It is scheduled for Sat., March 6 th, at 6pm, at the PUD building on Freeway Dr. in Mount Vernon, the same place as last year. It will be a planned potluck, with a sign up sheet at the Jan. & Feb. meetings. The five Photo-of-the-Year award categories are: Color Nature Assigned Topic (Architecture) Beulah Jennings Flower Award Austin DenHerder Bird Award. For the Color and Nature sections you may enter 5 images in each. At the January meeting we will give each of you the list of image titles you submitted in Your entries must come from these lists. We have the images on file, so just us which titles you want to enter. For the other 3 categories, the Assigned topic, the Flower category, and the Bird category, it isn t necessary to have shown these images at the club, but they should have been photographed in You may enter 3 images in each of these sections, and you will need to us your resized images along with titles. Any image fitting the category is eligible; domestic, wildlife, or photoshop enhanced. Please your entries before February 1 st so we have adequate time to organize them and mail to the judging club to be judged, and then returned to us in time for the dinner. This year our images will be judged by members of the Freeport Camera Club on Long Island, New York. In addition to viewing our own Photo-of-the-Year images and presenting our Traveling Trophy s, we also have an interesting program scheduled. Steve Fisher, APSA,of the F-67 Camera Club in Bremerton will be our guest speaker. Steve specializes in underwater photography and will be showing some of his favorite marine images taken over the years, and I may add he has some very beautiful underwater images of colorful subjects. He will also bring some of his underwater camera gear and demonstrate how it operates.
