3 Star Trails and Pinpoint Stars Study Group Field Trip Kulshan Campground Boat Launch area Weather permitting September 19, 2015, 7pm 11pm Trip Leader: Allison Beezer Description: Photograph the stars in a dark location with water and mountain views looking toward Baker and Shuksan. The evening will feature some moonlight to illuminate the mountains. Sunset: 7:14pm Moonset: 10:44pm Moon illumination: 36.6% This field trip will include lots of time for informally sharing information and ideas as we set up during last light and early darkness. We will finalize our individual setups for an hour of twilight/darkness, and then have a couple hours during the evening s last moonlight to shoot. If you plan to shoot star trails, please familiarize with interval shooting and other settings beforehand. Please be sure to bring warm clothing, flashlight and any needed food and water. A red/safe flashlight will be handy in the dark while shooting. A beach or lawn chair may be helpful. Directions: It is recommended that you map this beforehand, as cell or GPS may not work in this location In Google Maps, the location is called West Pass Dike Dam From Sedro-Woolley ARCO at Hwy 9-North/Township, head east on Hwy 20 for 16.5 miles Turn left / north onto Baker Lake Road between Birdsview and Concrete, and travel for 14.2 miles Turn right / Southeast on Baker Lake Dam Road, NF1112, and after 1.5 miles is your last restroom with plumbing on the left Just after the restrooms, follow a sign for Boat Launching that points left Arrive after travelling 0.4 miles at the boat launching parking lot To avoid walking on a 25yd hill, you can park in the Additional Boat Ramp Parking before the big lot. The Forest Service has asked that we not block the gates to the dike when parking. To minimize headlights in others photos upon departure, please park with headlights pointing away from the water. The only amenities at this site are Honey Buckets and a picnic shelter area. There is overnight camping at Kulshan Campground nearby. There is an emergency phone on Baker Lake Dam Road beyond our turnoff. There are two dikes visible from the parking lot. The lower dike, Depression Lake Dike has the cleaner natural scenes. We have gained permission from PSE to shoot in the area. Activity level: Easy Cost: Travel expense This will be a weather-dependent activity. Field trips are at each participant s personal risk and subject to the club liability waiver. 3

Box lunch will only be included for registrations prior to October 31. For an extra $19.99 you can register for a 15 minute Portfolio Review. 5 INFORMATION FROM KATHY ADMIRE RE NWCCC CONVENTION The 2015 NWCCC Convention will feature: Darrell Gulin, Canon Explorer of Light Your choice of three classes Several photo competitions and great print displays (see below) A box lunch (if you register by October 31) Darrell Gulin is an excellent presenter/educator. This promises to be a great learning experience and an opportunity to interact with members from many other clubs. Register online with a credit card. Website: INDIVIDUAL OPEN PRINTS COMPETITION - All prints will be displayed. Bring to MBCC September 18th meeting to be hand delivered by the October 1 st deadline. SIX prints total. Members must choose to enter either Large Color or Monochrome (8x10 to 16x20) or Small Color or Monochrome (8x ); with a maximum of THREE prints in each division (color or monochrome). Submissions may include top matting, but must conform to the above sizes. Flush mounting is also acceptable. Mounting can be no thicker than two 4-ply matte board no foam core. Print registration form from website and bring to September 18th club meeting with your prints. Put your Title, Name, and Camera Club on the back in the upper left. Kathy Admire will pick up your prints at the end of the Conference if you are unable to attend. INDIVIDUAL PROJECTED IMAGES COMPETITION - no categories FOUR images per person. SIZING: 1024 horizontal and 768 vertical; image cannot exceed 500 kb; jpeg file; srgb. EXAMPLE of how to title images: Blue Lupine_Kathy Admire_MBCC.jpg (Ask for return receipt) Deadline is midnight, October 1 st. registration form and entries to: nwccc.digital@gmail.com TRAVELING PRINT SHOW - Winners from last year s competition will be displayed. CLOTHESLINE - not a competition, but a fun opportunity. Bring FOUR photos, not to exceed 5 x 7, and pin on the clothesline (signed by maker on back or front). 7 President s Letter September 2015 It s time to kick off another season of photography and friendship at Mount Baker Camera Club! The Board held a summer meeting and are planning many new things this year. Five members will be taking the Image Analysis class at Photographic Society of America in the Fall, and we are expecting this will further refine the quality commentary and scoring that our club is already known for. We are all looking forward to learning from their new skills. And, the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs, a regional association, is reviving itself with an exciting program of learning and competition at November s conference in Seattle. This is a great chance to connect with other photographers from throughout Western Washington. Also, we are expecting a growing number of photo submissions for our club activities with last year s growth in new members. We re all looking forward to getting familiar with the skills and talents of the many new members! We tried many new things last year and these were well received by members, so the Board would like to continue. For example, this year will feature two nights of Before & After where we learn about processing from each other. We have increased our participation in the Washington State Fair competitions with seven members submitting this year. We will continue to start meetings with some members featured images, and with a shout-out for seasonal shooting ideas. Makers who prefer Comments Only will continue to have the option this is a great choice for those getting started with Regular Meeting submissions or for those who find the scoring too objective a measure for a such a subjective endeavor. Makers will continue to have the one-time option to re-process each image after commentary to improve the image for PSA interclub competition or for Photos of the Year competition in Nature and Open. We will also of course continue with the bread & butter traditions of the club Regular Meeting competitions and social time, Scavenger Hunt activities, Traveling Print Salon, PSA interclub competition, class for newer photographers, occasional club field trips, Photos of the Year celebration and other social gatherings. Each time we share our images, I am more deeply inspired to learn and share more in my photography. I sincerely look forward to enjoying your talents and smiles in another year at the Mount Baker Camera Club. Thanks for everything you each contribute to all that we share together.
