6 THOUGHT QUESTIONS (For tutors with less than one year of tutoring experience) As a tutor, you will encounter a variety of different types of students. Please take a few minutes to consider the following hypothetical tutoring situations and write your responses to the questions based on how you would handle each learning situation. 1) During a tutoring session, a student tells you that a particular class she is taking is completely irrelevant to her future and that she sees no point in studying the class material or perhaps even that she wants to drop the class. Describe how you might try to motivate that student to find relevance in such a class. 2) You are helping a student prepare for a test which will be based on a chapter reading from a class text. While working with the student, you notice that he hasn t underlined anything, nor has he taken notes in the margins or in a separate notebook. Furthermore, while the student has read the chapter in question, he has difficulty summarizing the main theme and important points of the text material. What would you say to the student concerning how to read a text in preparation for an exam? 3) You are attending a class along with your student (note: only Faculty Liaisons attend classes with students). The Professor has said that she will base test questions on the lecture. You notice the student isn t taking any notes in the class. When you meet with the student later in the day, what would you say and/or ask the student about her notes? 4) What would be your attitude towards working with reluctant learners? Do you think it would be a rewarding challenge or a frustrating task? Please explain briefly. Signature Date
