1 Thank you for your request for information about the Florida Bankers Educational Foundation (FBEF). The FBEF Scholarship/Loan Program is open to Florida residents who are college juniors, seniors or graduate students and who plan to work in the Florida banking industry upon graduation. Students must attend one of the FBEF=s participating universities or colleges. College juniors and seniors are eligible for FBEF Scholarship/Loans of up to $2,000 for the junior year and $2,000 for the senior year. Graduate students are eligible for up to $5,000 in total funding, with $2,500 awarded when they begin graduate school and $2,500 awarded when they are halfway through the program. Please note that students can either apply for undergraduate or graduate funding, but not for both. Applicants who have already worked in Florida banking for five or more years may apply for funding at the freshman and sophomore level, for a maximum of $3,000 ($1,500 for the freshman year and $1,500 for the sophomore year.) Once the sophomore year is successfully completed, they can apply to receive an additional $4,000 for their junior and senior years ($2,000 for the junior year and $2,000 for the senior year), for a possible total of $7,000 for their undergraduate degrees. FBEF funding is provided in the form of a loan which is forgiven upon the recipient=s completion of one year of full time employment at a Florida bank after graduation. Please note that if a student has to repay their loan they will be expected to repay the principal, fees and all accumulated interest. The FBEF is not affiliated with any state or federal low interest loan programs so the interest rate on FBEF loans is 8%. The application deadlines are August 1 st, November 1 st, February 1 st and May 1 st. Please contact FBEF Director Letty Newton for additional information if you are interested in applying for a FBEF Scholarship/Loan at lnewton@floridabankers.com or (850) , ext. 141.
2 SCHOLARSHIP/LOAN PROGRAM RULES AND ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FBEF Scholarship/Loan amounts are based on the number of semesters the student has remaining until graduation and may be pro-rated. Students are eligible for up to $4,000 for their junior and senior years (two loans of $2,000) or up to $5,000 for graduate school (two loans of $2,500). A limited number of scholarship/loans will be awarded to the top student applicants annually. Florida Bankers Educational Foundation (FBEF) Scholarship/Loans are forgivable loans that are forgiven after students complete one year of full-time, continuous employment at a Florida, FDIC-insured bank following graduation from an FBEF-approved Florida college. To apply: 1. You must be a college junior, senior or graduate student interested in working in Florida banking after graduation. 2. You must be a Florida resident registered at a participating college or university (all state colleges and many private colleges), taking banking-related courses. Proof of Florida residency (copy of a driver s license or voter registration card) must be provided when submitting your FBEF application. 3. You must achieve and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred. 4. An FBEF Scholarship/Loan application must be completed and submitted to the FBEF office. Before submitting your application, you must either have the FBEF University Representative designated for your university sign your application form, or you must obtain a letter of reference from a college dean or professor. 5. A report by an FBEF Interviewing Banker must be submitted to the FBEF office. If you are currently employed by a bank, you need to meet with an FBEF Interviewing Banker at another financial institution, at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. 6. A character reference letter (not a checking account reference) from a banker must be forwarded to FBEF. (A second interview with an FBEF Interviewing Banker may be submitted in place of the character reference letter if you are not currently employed by a bank.) 7. A current, official transcript must be forwarded to FBEF, including certification of the following: cumulative GPA, major, residency status, classification status, expected date of graduation and verification of current enrollment. Questions can be directed to Letty Newton, FBEF Director, by telephone at (850) , by fax at (850) , or via at lnewton@floridabankers.com.
3 FLORIDA BANKERS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP/LOAN APPLICATION PROCEDURES Application - Students should type or print neatly when completing the application form. A copy of the student s driver license must be provided as proof of Florida residency. An additional page can be attached to the back of the application form in order to provide a complete answer to Question F. Authorization of credit check - This form must be completely filled out then signed and dated by the student. No application will be considered without this form. College and university representatives - Students are responsible for setting up their own appointment to have their application signed by the FBEF representative of their college or university. If the student is not able to meet with their university representative, a letter of recommendation from a college dean or professor can be submitted instead. Official transcript - Students are responsible for having an official (sealed) transcript sent to the FBEF office from the college which they are currently attending. If the transcript does not show that the student is currently enrolled, then proof of registration or current enrollment must also be provided. Scholarship/loan applicants - Students who have not already worked full-time for five years in Florida banking are asked to submit a character reference letter from a banker who is a supervisor or co-worker. Students who are not currently working in banking will need to meet with two interviewing bankers. Grant applicants - Students with five years or more of full-time, Florida banking employment must submit a letter of reference from their supervisor, as well as a letter from the bank president or other high-level employee. In addition, grant applicants must submit a copy of their resume. Interviewing bankers - Students are responsible for setting up their own appointment to meet with an FBEF interviewing banker. The interview is not an employment interview but students are encouraged to dress and present themselves in a professional manner. The FBEF office will receive a report from the interviewing banker, which will be added to the student s application. Any questions about the requirements of the FBEF Scholarship/Loan should be directed to Letty Newton, FBEF Director, by telephone at (850) , by fax at (850) or via at lnewton@floridabankers.com THOMASVILLE ROAD SUITE 201 P.O.
