2 page 2 page 3 PASSION FOR CHEMISTRY BECOME AN ENSCL GRADUATE CHEMIST Since 1894, The Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille (ENSCL), or the National Graduate School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Lille, has been closely following scientific and technological developments in the training of its graduates. ENSCL provides its students with a solid grounding in chemistry, essentially based on chemical engineering, materials, formulation, bioprocesses and catalysis. To help them fit perfectly into today s industrial world and become responsible engineers, ENSCL offers effective tuition in foreign languages, social sciences, management, economics and administration. Being open to the entire world is also a priority for us. ENSCL has trained over 3,600 graduates whose qualities and skills are recognised worldwide. Industry (chemical, parachemical, pharmaceutical, food/agriculture ) remains their main source of employment. ENSCL prepares its students for production, research, development and of course personnel management. At the same time, their qualities and skills are recognised and sought after in other professional sectors such as the environment, quality and safety. So I decided to continue by preparing a thesis in the field of formulation, for which the knowledge I acquired during my studies at the ENSCL is essential.

PROGRAMME page 4 page 5 ENSCL offers an International Undergraduate Programme (CHEMISTRY INTERNATIONAL STUDIES) which allows both French and international students with science A-levels to enter one of the 19 Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Graduate Schools in the Federation Gay-Lussac (FGL) without sitting the entry exam. This programme lasts 2 years (semesters S1-S4). Selection is made after application. The courses are taught in Lille, Rennes or Clermont-Ferrand. This preparatory programme has been designed to host students having completed their secondary schooling within the last year, issued from France or abroad. A minimum level of French language is necessary to follow the courses in the programme. This specific two-year programme includes a high level scientific training enhanced by courses dealing with international economics and culture. After two years studies in the CHEM.I.ST. programme, the students who have fulfilled the examination requirements will be directly admitted to one of the 19 Graduate Schools of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering members of the FEDERATION GAY LUSSAC ( in order to earn in three more years the French Diplôme d Ingénieur, graduate degree, as well as a Master s degree in chemistry and chemical engineering. THE CHEM.I.ST. PROGRAMME IS ALSO : The dedicated training of students in small groups led by tutors. French as a Foreign Language An opening to business thanks to a one-month industrial placement at the end of the first year. Molecules Science A-levels (Bac) Preparatory classes Fundamental chemistry Industrial placement (6 weeks) The applications of chemistry THE ENGINEERING CURRICULUM Applicants to the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille must have completed at least two years of fulltime studies after having completed their secondary school. Students with a degree obtained in France or abroad after four years of successful university studies with a major in Chemistry can be admitted directly into the second year after examination of their academic records. During your engineering course (3 years), scientific and technological studies covering the main lines of chemistry will be rounded off by training in company management. The ENSCL also gives great importance to the learning of two languages: English and German or Spanish (as of 2010), with Japanese as an option. Throughout your studies, the 3P module (Personal and Professional Project) will help you to construct your professional project. Associated with training periods (lasting at least 10 months over the 3 years) and thanks to the inclusion of values of sustainable development and ethics in the curriculum, it will gradually lead you to grasp the responsibilities of being a civic engineer. In this respect, ENSCL has broadened its emphasis on fields which are both vital and sensitive, such as safety and the management of chemical risks. Degree holders: Master s 1 Master programmes (instruction in French): Formulation chemistry and engeneering. Materials Science. Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry. Catalysis and Processes. Advanced Master s in Drug Design The second year (semesters S7-S8) focuses on the applied aspects of chemistry: organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, solid-state chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering. Practicals, some of which are genuine mini-projects, will allow you to familiarise yourself with a scientific approach and to take initiatives. A FINAL PERSONALISED CURRICULUM For semester S8, you will choose a field of study: Molecules or Materials. The third year (semesters S9-S10) offers you three areas of specialisation: - Bioprocesses - Pharmacochemistry - Environment, - Formulation Chemistry, - Materials science/metallurgy It is possible to take your third year abroad (80 partnership universities); or take an option in another school in the FGL; or take a double degree abroad (at one of the 8 partner institutions) or with the IFP School (Graduate School of the French Petroleum Institute). You can also take a research master s degree at the same time as continuing your curriculum, and then follow it up with a doctorate, in particular in one of the 4 research laboratories associated with the ENSCL

4 AN INTERNATIONAL ORIENTATION: A PRIORITY FOR ENGINEERS Den Haag Utrecht page 6 page Rotterdam 7 ENSCL greatly encourages an international orientation with a minimum stay of 2 months abroad. The learning of two mandatory foreign languages is part of this policy. As well as being personally enriching, experience abroad is a vital advantage for any professional career. ENSCL cultivates contacts with large industrial groups and maintains partnerships with universities throughout the world (European Union, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, USA, Vietnam, ). What the ENSCL has given me is an extremely wide-ranging and solid grounding in general chemistry which has allowed me to adapt to the different fields in which I have worked, as well as the opportunity to take Japanese lessons and go to Japan several times. Anna SWIATKOWSKA Graduated Erasmus student, University of Wroclaw, Poland. I did my training period at ENSCL in the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Laboratory. This gave me fresh knowledge about the properties of active antiviral molecules. What s more, it also gave me the opportunity to discover France and the Nord - Pas de Calais region, while improving my French. Kevin GOUJON Graduated Double graduate, University of São Paulo. I decided to go to Brazil for a year to broaden my education, discover a new culture, learn another language and above all make the most of the marvellous opportunity provided by the ENSCL to study at one of the best universities in Latin America! Alexandra BAK Graduated Project Manager, Couplet Sugar Refinery, Belgium. I am currently working as a project manager in food research. Thanks to what the school taught me, and especially the final year options, I have been able to find my own way among the various fields of chemistry and concentrate on bio-industry. LIFE AT ENSCL ENSCL is based on the campus of the Cité Scientifique in Villeneuve d Ascq, just 15 minutes on the metro from the centre of Lille. You can enjoy all of its student facilities: library, restaurants, student centre, cultural centre, sports facilities (football, rugby, tennis, basketball ).
