This document will assist Class Associations and other organisations who are considering locations for their State, National and International regattas. With some of the worlds best yacht club facilities on offer, RQYS is the perfect location for your event. 3 OUR HISTORY Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron The Squadron s history dates back to 1885 when it was founded as the Brisbane Sailing Club, later to be known as the Queensland Yachting Club. Sailing quickly became a prominent sport in Queensland and within a few years competition was established with Sydneysiders for an inter-colonial sailing race in 22 footers. The late 1890 s and early 1900 s saw the Commodoreship of W.A. Douglas and Thomas Welsby, two great Queensland stalwarts who between them oversaw club matters for some time. Both are remembered by Moreton Bay beacons. In 1902 His Majesty King George VII bestowed the title of Royal on our club. The club acquired freehold premises in the city with sailing facilities in the lower reaches of the Brisbane River in the 1950 s. It was at this time that dinghy racing really developed in the club. Fleets of 30 and upwards in a class were common. Manly fine yachtsman grew from this competition. In 1961 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved a name change to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. RQYS circa 1964 The Squadron opened its premises at Manly in September 1964 and has continued to develop and improve its facilities to what is now regarded as one of the premier yacht clubs in Australia, catering for sailing and power boating enthusiasts as well as social activities. The Squadron has been represented at every Olympic Games in either competitor participation or management since In 1972 Squadron Members John Cuneo, Tom Anderson and John Shaw won the gold medal in the Dragon class. In 2008 Daniel Fitzgibbon took home the silver medal in the Skud 18 at the Paralympic Games. Team Racing Interdominions

5 LOCATION The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is located at Manly on the foreshores of Moreton Bay, a short 20 minute drive from the Brisbane CBD. Nearby are the Domestic and International Airports (20 minute drive over the Gateway Bridge) and the Port of Brisbane (15 minutes). Built on 20 hectares of freehold land, the site location also facilitates: Yachting Queensland Manly Marina Cove Motel Manly Harbour Village Shopping Centre is a 10 minute walk from the Squadron. Many cafés and restaurants IGA Supermarket Butcher Baker Barber Newsagent Post Office Chemist Bank of Queensland, Commonwealth Bank ATM and Suncorp ATM Sail Lofts Several sail lofts are within a few kilometers of the Squadron and most are able to pick up and drop off for overnight repairs during regatta. The tourist areas of the Gold Coast (including the world renowned theme parks Dreamworld, Sea World, Movie World and Wet n Wild Water Park) and the Sunshine Coast (Underwater World and the famous Australia Zoo) are only a 60 minute drive from the Squadron grounds.

6 FACILITIES RQYS activity facilities include: Over 550 floating marina berths 145 hardstand spaces Car, trailer and shipping container parking Repair and maintenance hardstand, boat retrieval facilities Laundries Bathroom and Showers in three locations 24 Hour Fuel Pontoon 2 Tonne Slew Crane (Etchells, Farr 30 etc.) Marina Trade Center including: o Stainless Steel Fabrication o Boat Building and Repairs o Marine Electrician Sailing School for members and general public Four (4) launching ramps Five (5) rigging lawns Over 80 qualified and trained volunteers for sailing and powerboat events Function facilities Flags Function Room for up to 170 patrons overlooking Manly Harbour and rigging lawns Boardwalk Café (alfresco style dining) RQ Bar Whatever the reason, the RQ Bar is the place for member and guests to enjoy a drink seven days a week. In addition, members and guests are offered alfresco-style dining in an environment second to none, on the boardwalk overlooking the harbour. The café is open Wednesday through to Sunday for lunch and dinner, however extended trading hours are offered seven days a week for all major regattas. The menu includes a large selection of light meals and snacks, breads, pizza and pasta, seafood and steak, lifestyle meals for the health conscious and well as a selection of special meals created by the Executive Chef. In addition, there is a variety of freshly brewed coffees, fine teas as well as a selection of wine, spirits, beers and non-alcoholic beverages. The relaxed atmosphere, spectacular water views and friendly, professional service make the Boardwalk Café and RQ Bar the perfect place to enjoy a meal and drinks at any time. 7 REGATTA MANAGEMENT RQYS has three full time staff members in a dedicated Marine Sports Office that will serve as the regatta office for all events. All regattas conducted at RQYS are managed through the Marine Sports Office. Marine Sports Office Facilities Internal VHF Channel for uninterrupted regatta communications 2 x fitted VHF radios 5 x computers with internet access Official Notice Board Official Flag Pole Colour printer/photocopier/scanner Online Entry & Payment Facility RQYS can create an online entry form RQYS can manage all income received from entries and refund the association Regatta Scoring RQYS utilises the Top Yacht results software with results posted to the dedicated results site each day Association websites can link directly to their results Race Officers RQYS has volunteer members of the Squadron who are qualified at International, National and State level Race Officers Protest Committees and Jury RQYS can provide qualified personnel for a Protest Committee and/or a Jury at a National Level Race Documents RQYS can assist in the creation of Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions documents All documents can be transferred to PDF format and linked from the regatta Microsite Regatta Promotion RQYS can assist in creating promotional posters for web and print A regatta Microsite can be created Resident marine photographer available for on-water action Volunteers RQYS has a large group (over 80) of volunteers coordinated by a designated Volunteer Coordinator. RQYS volunteers are easily recognisable by their volunteer team uniform. All our volunteers are friendly, helpful and very approachable. The Squadron provides on-going training and support for all their volunteers and have specialist volunteers experienced in all areas on water and off water race management.

8 REGATTA MANAGEMENT (con t) Start/Finish and Patrol Boats The Squadron is able to offer many dedicated boats for start, finish and patrol boat duties. These boats are capable of acting as marshal and mark laying boats with appropriate speed around the courses. 9 SAILING AREA Due to its location on the waters edge of Waterloo Bay, the Squadron is able to offer a range of courses for all types of yachting including inshore protected dinghy courses on Waterloo Bay where tidal influence is minimal and prevailing winds are from the south-east with occasional north-east sea breezes. Wind strength varies between knots. For open water sailing, the areas east of Green Island offers a vast expanse of water where more than one course can be sailed at a time. Tidal flow in these areas is mainly north-south and runs between 0.5 and 1.5 knots depending on seasonal conditions. Chart of the waters most commonly raced

10 RIGGING LAWNS The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has three main grassed rigging lawns within the vicinity of the club house. These rigging lawns merge to one large launching ramp. Other grassed rigging lawns are: Sailing School Far Eastern RQYS prides itself on the expansive rigging space. Competitors enjoying the expansive rigging lawn space. Plenty of room to move!

11 WEATHER Depending on the season, the winds of Waterloo and Moreton Bays vary between knots. Utilising our own weather station located on the roof of the Marina Office, together with various beacon points throughout the bay, we can accurately monitor the conditions. On the Squadron website users can monitor the conditions. 12 ACCOMMODATION The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is unique due to the abundance of accommodation located on site. Directly across from the main clubhouse is the Manly Marina Cove Motel. You can see the rigging lawns from the rooms! The motel offers affordable accommodation with rates available on the website. The Yachting Queensland building houses dormitory style accommodation perfect for teams and those who don t mind sharing. The camping grounds are perfect for those wanting to attend a regatta on a budget.
