4 St. Johns River State College Softball Coaching Staff Athletic Director - Ross Jones Head Coach - Katie Brosky Ross Jones joined the St. Johns River State College coaching staff as head baseball coach in 2008 and assumed the position of athletic director in Jones first season at the helm saw the Viking baseball team finish the 2009 season with a record. The 33 wins surpassed the previous school record of 30 wins in a season set in Jones is a 1984 graduate of Palatka High School. Upon graduating from high school, Jones was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1984 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent seven seasons pitching for the Rangers and Montreal Expos minor league systems. After retiring from professional baseball, Jones earned his A.A. degree from SJR State in 1991 and his bachelor s degree in education from the University of North Florida in Jones is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time. Ross and his wife, Tish, have two sons, Tyler and Hunter, and two daughters, Taylor and Tessa. Katie Brosky is entering her third year as head softball coach for the Vikings. Coach Brosky was born and raised in Palatka. She graduated from Palatka High School in 2003 and set the state strikeout record, with 471 strikeouts in a season, the same year. Brosky played at Seminole State College and won Female Athlete of the Year in She transferred to the University of North Florida and pitched for the Ospreys in the team s first season as a Division I program. After graduating with honors from UNF, Coach Brosky attended Florida State University s College of Law. While there, she played on the club softball team, was a member of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Society, and worked in the athletic department. Coach Brosky graduated from law school in 2010 before coming to the St. Johns River State College softball program. Her sister, Kaley, played softball at the University of North Florida and is an assistant coach for the Vikings. Both of her parents played sports for SJR State, and her mom was also the student government president. Coach Brosky has a dog named Rosin.
5 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Rachael wilkinson This is Rachael Wilkinson s third year as an assistant softball coach for SJR State. Wilkinson graduated from Dunnellon High School in 2007, where she played softball under defending state champion coach Kevin Fagan. She was a starting left-fielder for two years at SJR State and spent one year as a graduate coaching assistant. While playing for SJR State, Wilkinson earned All Mid- Florida Conference honorable mention recognition and had an accumulated batting average over.400 for both years. Wilkinson spent the summer coaching a traveling softball team to fourth place at state. She attended coaching clinics and university games following the teachings of Mike Candrea, eight time national champion and USA head softball coach, to hone her coaching skills. Wilkinson s love and passion for softball has prompted her to take up the mantra of coaching. It has been her lifelong passion to continue in the sport she loves. Assistant Coach Laura Hanstein Laura is originally from Pompano Beach, FL, where she graduated from Deerfield Beach High School. After high school she went on to play collegiate softball at Indian River State College, and then the University of North Florida. At Indian River, she was a member of the team that was conference champions, Region 8-A champions, and finished 5th at the NJCAA World Series. She was a first team all-conference and second team all-state selection. After graduating from IRSC, she continued her playing career at the University of North Florida, where she was a first team allconference and a first team all-region selection, and won the 2005 Peach Belt Conference championship. After completing her playing career at UNF, she stayed on as an assistant coach for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Hanstein has been a volunteer assistant with the Vikings for the past two seasons, working primarily with the hitters and infield. She also works full time as a firefighter. Assistant Coach Kaley Brosky The season marks Kaley Brosky s first year as an assistant softball coach for SJR State. Brosky graduated from Palatka High School and continued her journey to Daytona State College, where she played for two years. Brosky was an impact player at Daytona State, making the all-state team both years. Ending her career at Daytona with a.625 batting average, Coach Kaley then transferred to the University of North Florida, where she played her junior and senior year of college. Coach Kaley played middle infield and outfield for the Ospreys and batted first. Brosky also made the all conference team (Atlantic Sun) her junior year. Coach Kaley s teachings come from an array of unique coaches and players, taking what she has learned over the years and transforming it into her own style. She states that her biggest influence on her coaching philosophy came from her high school and travel ball coach, her dad (Bud Brosky). Coach Kaley is extremely grateful to be a part of the 2013 Viking softball team and hopes to bring her excitement, passion and love for the game to the program. St. Johns River State College Softball
6 St. Johns River State College Softball Preview COACHING STAFF Coach Katie Brosky will be entering her third season as the head softball coach for the Vikings. She has kept the help of assistant coaches Laura (Hammer) Hanstein and Rachael Wilkinson, in addition to new help from assistant coach Kaley Brosky. This year, Coach Brosky looks to improve her season record of as well as her overall record of Preview The season for the St. Johns River State Viking softball program could look to be very challenging. The Vikings are only returning five sophomores to the spring season, as well as adding 14 freshmen. Among the sophomores, standout catcher Kaylynn Sloat will look to be the dominant leader from behind the plate as well as up to the plate. Outfielders Katelynn Stoll and Chandler Singletary will also hold a presence on the field as returning sophomores, and Lydia Hough and Heather Muccino will hold down the offensive side for the Vikings with experience and dominant bats in addition to strong defensive power. All five sophomores have proven their leadership ability in the fall season for the Vikings, and Coach Brosky could not be more excited, The girls really stood out. They helped develop the freshmen as well as lead them to where we want to be for the spring! On the mound for the Vikings will be four freshman pitchers fighting to split time in the circle. Chelsey Bardroff looks to be the ace for the Vikings this season. Bardroff provides speed and spin on the ball, while fellow freshman pitcher Jesseca Gornto provides movement and offspeed pitching. Kali Sharpe and Jessica Keene will be effective in getting balls hit on the ground to the infield and will contribute to the staff with off-speed pitching from The 2013 Viking Softball Sophomores
7 Preview Sharpe and left-handed spin from Keene. With all four pitchers providing different roles on the mound, the Vikings are sure to keep opponents off balance. Other freshman standouts are Michaela Burton, Brandy Eaton and Sierra Sikes holding down the infield. Burton will start out as the Vikings main shortstop, while Eaton will fight to play third base or second base for the Vikings. Burton and Eaton are definite play makers. You could not ask for two better infielders, Brosky stated. Sikes will take some time at first base as well as designated player with a proven strong bat. Outfield freshmen Shanah (Boo) Thomas, Ashton Stevens, Alexis Koller, Misty Mosley, Carrie Bergdahl and local Allison Lewis will all fight for a starting position in the outfield. Thomas and Stevens have strong, powerful arms, Mosley and Lewis have impeccable speed, and Koller and Bergdahl have great range. It s hard to only pick three people to put out there, when everyone has proven their worth, said Brosky. Lucky for us, all of them are on our team, because I would not want to play against them. The Viking softball program will take a run at a 61 game season in hopes of making it back to the state tournament. Coach Brosky and her assistants could not be more excited about the season ahead All Mid-Florida Conference Softball Team First-team Amanda Smith Second Team Kaylynn Sloat Heather Sutliff Heather Muccino Ana Lopez St. Johns River State College Softball
