4 Programme Characteristics MSc EMEA is jointly implemented with the Lebanese American University (LAU) and successor to the MA Economic Change in the Arab Region ( , with Damascus University) 3 Main features Joint degree with LAU Two pillars: (i) general economics and (ii) specific aspects of Middle East economies Programme duration of 2 years More than 50 per cent of total ECTS credits are contributed by courses and a thesis in the specific field of Middle East Economics At LAU, self-financing students pay tuition fees of approx. $8,000 In 2015, last students intake getting a GAMP scholarship MSc Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)

9 8 EMEA in Numbers (2) Alumni 57 overall, 4 EMEAs so far, 5 are almost finished Completion rate is 100% for ECAR '09 - '11 ECAR/EMEA '12 -'13: A few students postpone their graduation due to internships or a situation of hardship What jobs do alumni pursue? 10 Achievements Integration into regular university processes continued while keeping EMEA specific rules and options Curricular options have been extended in Marburg, following the promotion of Prof Mohammad Farzanegan (Economics of the Middle East) from junior to full professorship Continuous scientific cooperation, e.g. in 2015: Economists from LAU participated in the CNMS workshop on 'Networks of Dependency' LAU representatives have become the regional partner in an application for research funds from VW Foundation LAU coordinator s PhD work is co-supervised in Marburg, resulting in regularly meetings/doctoral colloquiums in Marburg 9 MSc Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)

11 Challenges Small problem: Delays with MoU and accreditation in Germany Big problem: Recruitment of self-financing students Possible reasons are the costs of studying EMEA and the political situation associated with Lebanon Too few Lebanese applications 10 MSc Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)

12 Concluding Remarks (1) Where does the programme stand at the moment? Currently making plans for modifying the structure, for instance 1) Replace EMEA in 2017 with a more interdisciplinary programme, e.g. MSc Political Economy of Middle East 2) Programme co-ordination by Prof Farzanegan What was successful? 1) EMEA has identified and trained talents from the Arab world and Germany specifically for the field Middle East Economics 2) Teaching quality has been continuously increasing since the start of the programme 3) Co-operation between Economics Faculty, LAU and CNMS 11 MSc Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)

13 Concluding Remarks (2) What did not work out properly? Winning an adequate number of self-funding students Why? Relatively higher financial costs of study (compared to other programmes in Germany) and political conditions in Lebanon especially after the start of the Syrian conflict What has been the outcome so far? 1) EMEA put Germany on the map as a place for studying Middle East Economics 2) Alumni, of course! 19 Programme Strategy General approach to reaching the goal of sustainability Integrate programme organisation into existing structures of both universities Avoid parallel structures, e.g. in teaching and other student services Reach target cohort size to run on a productive scale (approx. 20 participants) Develop the programme according to student and market feedback Sustainability depends on a sufficient demand for selffinancing places and the integration of EMEA into regular university processes! 18 MSc Economics of the Middle East (EMEA)
