1 Market Commentary PBX/UC Call Control Q September 2015 Press Release MEA Only Bright Spot for Falling Global PBX/Call Control Market The latest figures released by MZA have shown that PBX/Call Control extensions and licenses market (excluding Micro PBX products) fell by 5% year-on-year in the calendar year Q (April to June 2015 inclusive). Following a slow start to the year in Q1 2015, the first half of the 2015 global market witnessed a 6% year-on-year decline, against the first half of The Middle East and African market was the only region to significantly grow in the quarter, up by 10% year-on-year, with the North American market up by 1% year-on-year as all other regional markets fell. WORLD PBX/IP PBX MARKET Total Extensions Market (excl Micro PBXs), by Technology - 000s 13,312 12,691 54% 52% 46% 48% Q Q IP Extensions TDM Extensions The SME market continued to fall at a faster rate than the enterprise market, hastened by the continued adoption of multi-tenant hosted telephony solutions as solutions 100 extensions/licenses (SME) fell by 7% year-on-year while solutions >100 extensions/licenses (enterprise) fell by 3% year-on-year. At a regional level, growth was seen in the MEA and Asia Pacific enterprise markets. Panasonic and Alcatel-Lucent were notable movers in MEA posting strong figures while Huawei enjoyed a strong uplift in year-on-year volumes in Asia Pacific, specifically China. All other regional markets were in decline, with the Eastern European market in free fall amid the ongoing Russian Financial crisis. Poorly performing major markets, notably France, Germany, Netherlands and the UK, drove the Western European enterprise market into a double-digit decline year-on-year. Overall the North American enterprise market was relatively stable this quarter, as the US enterprise market remained flat year-on-year. However, the Canadian enterprise market suffered a double-digit decline with official government figures stating business
2 outlays in communications products fell, as the Canadian economy moved into recession. Latin America saw a double-digit decline. Deployments slowed significantly within the Mexican public sector due to new competition law changes imposed by the new Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law, and the Brazilian market struggled in the wake of continued economic stagnation. In the SME market, the biggest regional market, Asia Pacific, largely drove the global decline. However, this was against a strong Q when the availability of the KX-NS 300 communications solution from Panasonic drove many Asia Pacific SME markets into growth. Germany and the UK, steered a 7% decline in the Western European SME market. Business investment has slowed in recent quarters in Germany, while the weakness of the euro has impacted on the expected sales of the non-european manufacturers with global price lists particularly in the SME driven German PBX market, as well as in other eurozone countries. In the UK, a sharp decline in volume sales should be considered against a strong quarter the year before, but nevertheless showed a significant decline in volume driven by some of the key UK market leaders in the segment. Bucking recent trends North America witnessed year-on-year growth for the first time since Q3 2013, while the other regional markets faltered. However, against a strong Q in the region, MEA saw a much less significant decline than the more troubled regional markets of Latin America and Eastern Europe. Global PBX/IP PBX Market Competitive Landscape Q Avaya regained the lead in the global PBX/Call Control market in Q2 2015, with a market share of 12%. Avaya, the global leader in 2014, witnessed volume uplifts with Aura and IP Office in North America, allied to improving IP Office sales in both Middle East and Africa and Latin America. Q market leader Cisco, enjoyed strong growth in collaboration revenue driven by a refreshed product line and its shift towards more recurring revenue through its subscription and SaaS buisnesses. However call control license volume fell in the quarter and Cisco dropped to second position with an 11% share. NEC, climbed to third position with a 10% share, up one percentage point, supplanting Panasonic who dropped to fourth position. NEC saw growth along with a number of vendors in Japan, against a slow market in Q when a planned increase in sales tax in April 2014 pushed many sales into the previous quarter. Moreover, NEC introduced the SV9000 series to the rest of Asia Pacific and witnessed a strong uplift in volume in a number of markets, as well as improving its volumes in Western Europe and Middle East and Africa. Panasonic were unable to match its volume levels year-on-year, against a particularly strong Q when the introduction of the KX-NS 300 saw a strong uptake through its channel, particularly in emerging Asia Pacific markets. Mitel remained in fifth position globally with an 8% share bolstered by good traction in the US market Of the major players, Huawei and Microsoft in sixth and ninth positions globally posted the strongest year-on-year performances. For Microsoft, volumes in the enterprise market were aided by the launch of Skype for Business 2015 in April, an updated version of Lync which heralded a brand change and some new features. Huawei posted substantial growth in China, largely driving a significant increase in global volume and market share. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise continued to see strong growth in IP lines in both SME and enterprise, with overall line volume up 2.5% in Q driven by volume uplifts in extensions in Western Europe, Middle East and Africa and China. Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise claimed seventh position and a 6% global share in Q2 2015, up from a 5%
3 share of the market in Q Unify also performed well in the MEA market as it remained in eighth position globally. In solutions 100 extensions/licenses (excluding Micro PBX products), Panasonic continued to lead the way from NEC with both vendors obtaining a 14% share of the market. Cisco and Avaya remained out front in the >100 extensions/licenses market in Q2 2015, with shares of 19% and 13% respectively. Huawei, through its growth in the Chinese market, closed the gap in third position gaining a position and 12% of the market, up four percentage points year-on-year. World IP Extensions/Licenses Market IP extensions/licenses fell by 1% year-on-year, but outperformed the total market driven by the growth in the North American, Asia Pacific and MEA markets. North America saw its IP penetration rate (the % of IP extensions into total extensions to the desktop) rise to 73% in the quarter, driven by continued adoption in the US market. Huawei and NEC largely drove the Asia Pacific IP licenses market up 6% year-onyear, while Avaya, Microsoft and Mitel can be largely credited with driving a 3% growth in the North American market. The global IP penetration rate rose to 48% in Q from 46% in Q with the Eastern European market recording its lowest IP penetration rate in Q for five quarters; as IP centric Western manufacturers struggled to compete for market share in Russia against some of the more TDM-centric vendors due to the continuation of economic sanctions. Cisco retained leadership of the global IP licenses market with a 20% share from Avaya in second position with 17%. Mitel followed in third position with a share of 9% ahead of Microsoft and Huawei in fourth and fifth positions respectively. Global PBX/IP PBX Market Rolling Year Excluding Micro PBX products, the global PBX/Call Control extensions and licenses market over the rolling year CY Q to CY Q (July 2014 to June 2015 inclusive) fell by 2% year-on-year, with both solutions in enterprise (>100 licenses/extensions) and solutions in SME ( 100 licenses/extensions) segment, falling by 2%. In volume terms, the market is down by close to a million extensions over the rolling year. Of particular significance, are the declines in the Russian, German and the UK markets, these three markets combined accounted for a loss of over one million extensions against the previous rolling year. The Russian financial crisis and restrictions on foreign exports into Russia due to economic sanctions, has seen the Russian PBX market freefall. The weakness of global trade and depreciation of the euro against other currencies has particularly hampered investment in call control solutions in recent quarters in the SME led German market. Declines in volume sales in the UK market should be set against a very strong rolling year (Q to Q2 2014), where a number of large deployments spiked the market somewhat. Although political uncertainty during the run-up to the UK general election amongst enterprises with strong EU trade links led to an increasing reticence to invest in solutions, and influenced the downward trend in the UK market volumes over the rolling year. Avaya led the global market with a 12% share overall and its rolling year share performance is tracking positively. Volume growth in North America allied to rapid growth in Middle East and Africa largely drove its global lead. Avaya s volume growth
4 in the mid-market through its IP Office solution is helping to sustain its rolling year leadership. Cisco is tracking one percentage point behind the market leader in second position with an 11% share. NEC bolstered by the launch of its SV9000 series and continued uptake of the SL1000/1100 solutions, gained market share over the rolling year. Year-on-year volume growth in Asia Pacific, particularly in Japan, aided the rolling year performance. Panasonic is now tracking flat over the rolling year in fourth position, compared to tracking up one percentage point in the rolling year featured in our Q report published in June. Strong sales in Q following Panasonic s new product launch, as well as the impact in some markets of the end of sale announcement of the NCP range and the KX-TDE100 and KX-TDE200 solutions in Q2 2015, saw a volume decline in the quarter for the vendor. The remaining positions are unchanged from our last report. Mitel and Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise remain in fifth and sixth positions respectively ahead of Huawei, Unify, Microsoft and Ericsson-LG Enterprise. However, year-on-year, both Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise and Huawei have moved up to sixth and seventh positions. Alcatel- Lucent Enterprise, whose vast majority of shipments are sold in Western Europe, have performed particularly well in difficult markets in the region with line volume up over the rolling year versus a 6% regional market decline. Huawei s strong uplift in volume in China in Q saw it take its global market share to 5% over the rolling year, up one percentage point. In the SME ( 100 licenses/extensions) market, Panasonic retained first position for the rolling year for the third consecutive quarter, with its market share at exactly 15% for the rolling year, up one percentage point. NEC remained in second position with a stable 14% share, ahead of Avaya who took a 10% market share. Cisco continued to lead the global >100 extensions/licenses market, with a market share of 20%, down two percentage points. The leading positions are unchanged and as per the rolling year market shares in our Q publication Avaya continue to track well with its market share at 14%, up one percentage point year-on-year.
