1 Spring 2013 Newsletter Above: Dr. Larry Berger What s Inside University of Nebraska - Lincoln Department of Animal Science This newsletter was written and designed by Animal Science Ambassador Dustin Renken The State of Animal Science by Dr. Larry Berger, UNL Animal Science Department Head O pportunities for students majoring in Animal Science have never been greater and the future has never been brighter. In the future Animal Science graduates will operate in a global market place. By 2050, it is estimated there will be 9 billion people on this planet. The demand for animal protein is expected to double because as low income people around the world increase their standard of living, one of the first things they do is to improve the quality of their diet by adding animal protein. The magnitude of this challenge is amazing when you bring it to the local level. For example, there are 1.3 billion people in China currently eating about 8 lbs. of beef per person per year. If they increased their beef consumption by 1.0 lb. per person yearly, it would require all of the beef produced from the cow herd in Nebraska to meet that demand. Opportunities in Animal Science...pg. 2 Opportunities in Animal Science...pg. 3 Nebraska has approximately 2 million cows and if every calf from those cows produced 650 lbs of edible beef, that would equal the 1.3 billion lbs needed. Dietary habits change slowly, but the fact that Mac- Donald s is building 150 new restaurants per year in China, with no slow down in sight, means others also see the potential. Animal scientist and those in the allied industries will need to create production systems where we can double animal production on the same land without negatively impacting the environment or natural resources. It is estimated that 70% of this increased production will have to come as the result of new technology. We can give you the training and experiences needed to develop and apply this new technology. In the Department we have world class teachers with expertise in beef and dairy cattle, swine, poultry, horses, and companion animals. If your goal is to have a fulfilling career that involves animals, we can help you reach your goal. Recent Graduates...pg. 4 Ambassadors...pg. 5

4 Recent Graduates Bailey Kobs Tacy Langemeier Andrew Uden My Animal Science Experience was MOTIVATING Degree: Animal Science - Equine Current Employment: Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom I have always had a passion for animals and agriculture in general, but my Animal Science Degree really helped my see and understand the science behind it. I now have more information to accurately educate others about agriculture, as well as take better care of my own animals. My Animal Science Experience was CAPTIVATING Degree: Animal Science - Business Current Employment: Production and Marketing Associate at Imperial Wagyu Beef The Animal Science Department was instrumental in getting me to where I am today. It gave me the opportunity to be involved in several organizations and activities which helped me develop key skills that are important in life. While completing her undergraduate experience at UNL, Tacy studied abroad in Costa Rica. During that summer in 2011, she assisted Julio Rodriguez with his meat research for his masters degree through Kansas State. We did the research at TEC in Santa Clara, Alejeula, Costa Rica near Ciudad Quesada, said Tacy. Combined with her skills strengthened by the UNL Meats & Livestock Team, coaching the UNL Meats Judging Team, Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars to name a few, Tacy uses her Animal Science Education to recruit Angus cattle ranchers to produce F-1 Angus/wagyu calves, coordinate contracting cattle to supply feedyards, and maintain and develop company social media pages and marketing materials. My Animal Science Experience was FOUNDATIONAL Degree: Animal Science -Production Management Current Employment: Intern at National Student Leadership Forum with plans of going back to graduate school next fall. Animal Science laid the goundwork for how I approach and solve problems, as well as gave me a great network that I continue to rely on today. Throughout Andrew s education, he has studied abroad in Kenya and Scotland and completed internships and work experiences in Australia. Studying abroad opened my eyes to many things and allowed me to see 15 countries as well as building a network of fiends around the world. During his undergraduate experience at UNL, Andrew was a member of the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars and Block & Bridle while competing on the Meat Animal Evaluation Team and the Livestock Judging team.
