1 ANIMAL and VETERINARY SCIENCES DEPARTMENT ADVISING GUIDELINES (revised May 2015) Students need to complete the following University, College, and Department requirements ASCI Department/Major Degree Requirements ASCI 001 Introduction to Animal Sciences (4 credits) ASCI 110 Animal Nutrition, Metabolism, and Feeding (4 credits) ASCI 122 Animals in Society/Animal Welfare (3 credits) ASCI 141 Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals (4 credits) ASCI 215 Physiology of Reproduction (3 credits) ASCI 168 Animal Genetics & Breeding (3 credits) or BCOR 101 Genetics (3 credits) ASCI 181 Career Seminar (1 credit) BIOL 001 & BIOL 002 or BCOR 011& BCOR12 Introductory Biology (4 credits/semester) CHEM 23 or 31 Inorganic Chemistry (4 credits each) CHEM 26 or 42 or 141 Organic Chemistry (4 credits each) Statistics 111 or 141 or 211 (3 credits each) Math 9 or higher (3 credits each for Math 9, 19 and 21) Elective ASCI course Elective ASCI 200 level course Animal Health, at least one: ASCI 117, 118, 263, 264, 277 (3 credits each), MMG 101 (4 credits), 222 (4 credits), 223 (3 credits), 225 (3 credits), MLRS 242 (3 credits) University Degree Requirements Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.00 required Thirty of the last forty-five credits in residence required Diversity Course requirement (one D1 category course and one additional D1 or D2 category course Foundational writing and Information Literacy requirement (one course: ENGS 001 or HCOL 085 for first year students in CALS; ENGS 50 for other CALS students) 1. General Education requirement in Sustainability (one SU category course) For more information see 1. CALS Core Curriculum Requirements Successful completion of a minimum of 120 credits of course work. Completion of CALS Core Competencies through which you will acquire basic knowledge, skills, and values as indicated below. A more detailed explanation of these core requirements may be found in the University catalogue. KNOWLEDGE Physical and Life Sciences: Satisfied by ASCI Program Core Requirements. Social Science: complete two 3-credit classes from anthropology, community development and applied economics, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, public policy, and sociology Revised May 4,

2 Humanities and Fine Arts: Complete two 3-credit classes from art, classics, theatre, history, music, philosophy, religion, foreign language or literature SKILLS Oral Communication: Competency may be met by satisfactory completion of two courses: CALS 001 or CALS 183 (or equivalent) where the primary focus is public speaking, and an additional course or series of courses, in which students present a minimum of three graded speeches to a group. Main Course: Courses having presentation experience:,, Written Communication: Competency may be met by satisfactory completion of the University Foundations Writing and Information Literacy Requirement (ENGL 001 or ENGL 050 or HCOL 085), and an additional course or series of courses that uses the writing process (redrafting) for a minimum of three graded papers. Environmental Stewardship: Students develop sensitivity for the interconnected relationship between human beings and the natural world and the responsibility for stewardship of the environment. Satisfied by University Sustainability Requirement. Personal Growth: Students develop an understanding and appreciation of a healthy lifestyle and a love for learning that will lead to continuous growth and development throughout their lives. Students continue to improve themselves by developing and affirming the values of respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice, and responsibility. Satisfied by ASCI Course Requirements. 3 Each of the following options should be designed in conjunction with the faculty advisor to meet the career goals of the individual student. The courses listed are highly recommended for each option but recognize the need for flexibility to allow optimum educational benefit. Note - a minimum of 40 credit hours are available for program electives under each option. PRE-VETERINARY SCIENCE OPTION - This option is designed for the individual whose career goals include an advanced degree; and/or veterinary, medical or dental school; or pharmacy training. Several of the courses listed below will also meet either the College or Animal Science program requirements. The courses listed in bold are generally required by U.S. vet schools. Other courses represent electives from which the student and adviser will select depending upon program interests. See Pre-professional advising sheet and/or individual medical/dental or veterinary school entry guidelines to check required courses. (These elective credits are in addition to the required ASCI courses and the CALS requirements listed on the first page). 6 ZOO, EXOTIC AND COMPANION ANIMAL OPTION This concentration is designed for students who are primarily interested in zoo, exotic, and companion animals and are interested in transitioning to jobs in these industries after graduation. Courses are offered on the management, care, breeding, health and training of zoo, exotic and companion animals with hands on experiences available locally and through summer course work and internships.
