Dr. Robert Friendship University of Guelph Dr. Robert Friendship is Professor in the Department of Popula on Medicine at the University of Guelph, specializing in swine health management. Dr. Friendship has published 12 book chapters and over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented at a number of interna onal scien fic conferences. One area of interest is public health as it relates to pig farming and in par cular the emergence of mul -drug resistant bacteria. An microbial resistance of Staphyloccoci isolated from Ontario pigs Presenta on Abstract: The main lesson learned from this research is that prevalence of super bugs in connec on with livestock produc on is not necessarily related to an bio c use. An microbial resistance is complex and the use of alterna ve treatments such as heavy metals at therapeu c levels and the use of strict sanita on with disinfec on will also create a scenario by which super bugs emerge. We demonstrated that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) commonly carries a gene for zinc resistance and genes for resistance to disinfectants in the same mobile gene c element that the MecA gene is carried, so that feeding high levels of zinc inadvertently selects for methicillin resistance.
Dr. Brandon Gilroyed University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus Dr. Brandon Gilroyed is Assistant Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus. He leads an interdisciplinary research program focused on integra on of the bioeconomy with agriculture and understanding the environmental impacts associated with those connec ons. He oversees opera ons and R&D at the UofG Centre for Agricultural Renewable Energy and Sustainability (CARES), which is centered around a commercial-scale biogas facility. In rela on to Emergency Management, Dr. Gilroyed has done research inves ga ng biosecure mortality disposal, survival of pathogens in the agroecosystem, and assessing risk of invasive plant dissemina on within the bioeconomy. Intersec ons between emergency management, the bioeconomy and the environment Presenta on Abstract: The developing bioeconomy in Ontario is resul ng in new pathways for the flow of agricultural products, byproducts, and wastes. This represents both challenges (e.g. introduc on of new dissemina on pathways) and opportuni es (e.g. provision of raw materials and/or processing capacity) in terms of emergency management. Research highlights to be presented will touch on dissemina on of invasive plant species, disposal of animal byproducts, and emergency livestock disposal in rela on to the broader bioeconomy.
Dr. Andria Jones-Bi on Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph Dr. Andria Jones-Bi on is a veterinarian, epidemiologist, and Associate Professor in the Department of Popula on Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. Her previous research has largely centred around food-borne, waterborne and zoono c diseases; she is now focusing on the epidemiology of mental health in the agricultural and veterinary sectors. She uses mixed research methods (quan ta ve and qualita ve) to achieve her research objec ves. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Epidemiology, and a graduate course in Qualita ve Research Methods. Exploring Agricultural Producer Stress and Resilience Presenta on Abstract: Andria s presenta on will highlight the importance of research and ac on in terms of producer mental health and wellbeing. The poten al impacts of regular occupa onal stresses and agricultural emergencies on producer wellbeing, produc vity, and on-farm produc on will be discussed. Current and planned ini a ves to explore producer stress and resilience in Canada will be summarized.
Dr. Paula Menzies University of Guelph Dr. Paula Menzies is Professor of Small Ruminant Health Management in the Department of Popula on Medicine, University of Guelph. She is a Diplomate in the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management and is the current Vice President of the Interna onal Sheep Veterinary Associa on. A few of her research ac vi es and interests include: control of gastrointes nal nematode parasites; control of Coxiella burne i infec ons in sheep and goats and diagnosis of Johne s disease in small ruminants. She has developed health management programs for sheep and goats including, most recently, a guide for udder health of dairy sheep and goats. Dr. Menzies has served on numerous small ruminant na onal and interna onal commi ees. Prevalence and strain iden fica on of Coxiella burne i on dairy goat farms and in associated wildlife Presenta on Abstract: To control Coxiella burne i in goats and lower risk to humans, we need to determine the role wildlife may play. While the genotyping results for this project are s ll pending, we know that wildlife on the farms and in nearby natural areas are infected with C. burne i. The genotyping results will help us get one step closer in iden fying the role that wildlife play in the transmission of C. burne i. In the event that wildlife are infected with the same bacterial strain as the dairy goats then we will suggest extra farm biosecurity to prevent future transmission between livestock and wildlife. Managing this disease on the farm is not only important for livestock and other farm animals, but also for the farm producers.
Kevin Vander Kooi University of Guelph - Holland Marsh Kevin was born and raised on a vegetable farm in the Holland Marsh. He graduated from the University of Guelph s Associated Diploma in Agriculture program. His main focus of study was hor culture. Kevin worked at the Muck Crops Research Sta on as a summer student and is currently the Research Technician for Dr. Mary Ruth McDonald s research program. He enjoys building specialized equipment, improving the technical methods used in research and seeing the outcomes of the research. Diseases Threatening Vegetable Crops in Ontario Presenta on Abstract: Two new plant pathogens or pathogen groups have become an issue for growers of vegetables crops in Ontario. Field, greenhouse and laboratory trials were conducted at the Muck Crops Research Sta on (MCRS), University of Guelph and University of Guelph Simcoe Research Sta on. The projects involved evalua on of the effect of fungicides or biological control products to control Stemphylium leaf blight of onion and asparagus and Fusarium root rot of carrots and Fusarium wilt spinach. The project also evaluated various disease forecas ng models to determine the best me to ini ate spray programs to stop the spread of stemphylium leaf blight of onion and asparagus.
Dr. Terri O Sullivan Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph Dr. Terri O'Sullivan is assistant professor in swine health management in the Department of Popula on Medicine, Ontario Veterinary College. An OVC 98 graduate, O Sullivan spent several years in prac ce before returning to the college to complete a PhD in epidemiology with a focus on swine disease surveillance followed by a post-doctoral fellowship examining emerging produc on problems in weaned pigs. O'Sullivan is also execu ve editor of the Journal of Swine Health and Produc on and president of the Ontario Associa on of Swine Veterinarians. Epidemiological inves ga ons documen ng early phase of the emergence of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus in Ontario swine herds Presenta on Abstract: This project will quan fy and validate the risk factors that were involved in the 2014 PEDV outbreak in Ontario. Other agri-food sectors in Ontario can learn from this project the benefits of developing healthy mul stakeholder collabora ons. Specifically, the value of the development of partnerships between academia, feed industry, government, diagnos c laboratory, veterinarians, and producers, when dealing with research focused on a complicated infec ous disease outbreak.
Edward Malek Canadian Food Inspec on Agency Edward Malek is a Na onal Opera ons Specialist and Disposal Technical Specialist with the Canadian Food Inspec on Agency. Edward has responded to many disease outbreaks of avian influenza and other reportable diseases, and is a trainer and mentor of responders. Promo ng Wellbeing During an Animal Health Emergency Presenta on Abstract: When an animal health emergency occurs, there may be associated human health impacts from the various stressors that affect the wellbeing of the farmer, responders, and the community. Health and wellbeing are promoted through diet, exercise, sleep and connec on to a community that assist with the building of resilience for the impacted individuals to assist with the response and recovery func ons of the emergency.
Dr. Gary Vroegindewey One Health Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Gary Vroegindewey is the current Director of One Health Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is the current Chair of the World Organiza on for Animal Health (OIE) ad hoc Commi ee on Animal Health and Welfare and Veterinary Public Health in Disasters. Gary is also the former Director of the US Department of Defense Veterinary Services. Future Direc ons for One Health and Disaster Management/ Disaster Risk Reduc on Presenta on Abstract: One Health has evolved to address local, na onal and interna onal issues. It has expanded from its incep on to take into considera on economic, social, poli cal, cultural, and religious arenas that must also be considered for effec ve and efficient preparedness and response. A new model uses biological systems to demonstrate the characteris cs required to achieve resilience. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduc on is se ng an agenda for the future. These priori es as well as guidelines such as those developed by the World Organiza on for Animal Health (OIE) will have impacts on disaster response, produc on prac ces, and trade from the local producer up to the na onal veterinary service level.
