Course Description: This infection control online course was designed for non clinical staff in health care facilities. The content of this program covers a wide spectrum of infection control topics from a brief introduction to the microbiology of major organisms like MRSA and Clostridium difficile to transmission and prevention. The course also covers content on disease outbreaks, precautions, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), guidance documents from the CDC, and OSHA standards for Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP). This online course was designed as a self directed educational program for non clinical health care employees. Individuals are responsible for logging on to the course and completing the assigned reading material and answer all questions for each week. Participants of this program will collaborate, interact, review material, and ultimately, learn from the reading materials and each other s knowledge and experiences. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to facilitate an adult learning and collaborative environment in which non clinical managers and directors can expand their knowledge and prepare for the many challenges facing healthcare facilities related to spread of infectious diseases. Course In order to keep with the pace of this educational program, students must follow the specified format below. Each week provides details regarding assignments that students must complete in order to successfully meet the minimum requirements for this course. Completion of reading assignments and coursework are required in order to successfully complete the course. Minimum requirements: Each week has course assignments. Those assignments must be accomplished to successfully complete and pass the course. If a student does not comply with all of the minimum requirements and due dates, credits will not be allocated to that individual and a certificate of completion will not be issued.

All coursework assigned each week must be completed and submitted within the designated timeframe. By reading all the required material, the coursework can be completed in a thoughtful and meaningful way. Weekly Assignments WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION While hospital surfaces may harbor harmful organisms, the number one method of infection transmission to healthcare patients is via hand contact with contaminated surfaces. While hand hygiene is essential, cleaning is a fundamental step in infection prevention. Because cleaning is fundamental, we will address this first. Cleaning involves the removal of visible soils, organic matter, and salts. The act of scrubbing with detergents, followed by a water rinse, will remove large numbers of microorganisms. Without proper cleaning, disinfection and sterilization efforts will be far less effective. The readings from Week 1 begin by explaining the various classifications of hospital surfaces. We will discuss general cleaning strategies and disinfection procedures, and the factors that determine which methods are used. We also address some special challenges to hospital disinfection including textiles, plant life, VRE, MRSA, C. difficile, and viral pathogens. Our readings also examine the treatment of regulated medical waste, and culminate in CDC s recommendations for environmental services, laundry and bedding, and regulated medical waste. Please be sure to review these guidelines. Due Date: End of Week 1 (Sunday) WEEK 2 MICROORGANISMS: THE EFFICACY OF CLEANING AND DISINFECTION The readings from Week 2 delve deeper into the practical aspects of cleaning and disinfecting as these aspects directly impact infection prevention. We will examine the factors that affect the efficacy of cleaning and disinfection, as well as the uses of various disinfecting agents. This week s readings explore emerging pathogens, bioterrorism agents, toxicological concerns, environmental concerns, and occupational concerns. In addition, there is a special discussion centered on surface disinfection, air disinfection, and the contamination of liquid disinfectants. The questions must be completed in a Due Date: End of Week 2 (Sunday) WEEK 3 THE CHAIN OF INFECTION AND HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS There are approximately two million cases of hospital associated infections (HAI) each year, with approximately 90,000 of these resulting in death. More patients die from HAI than breast cancer, prostate cancer, or AIDS, according to the American Public Health Association (APHA). While HAI are a very real concern for patients, health care workers, and environmental services, it is important for us to consider that these types of infection are not inevitable.

Our readings discuss the modes of transmission of microorganisms and strategies for prevention of HAI. The questions must be completed in a Due Date: End of Week 3 (Sunday) WEEK 4 INFECTION PREVENTION PPE AND PRECAUTIONS The readings for week 4 focus on the prevention of infection through the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). While the critical need for PPE among clinical health care workers is well established, Environmental Service professionals must also use PPE to prevent infection and contamination. Thus, this week s readings explore the importance of PPE in the health care environment and OSHA s guidelines concerning the proper use. In addition, we will look at CDC/ HICPAC guidelines for infection prevention. This week s readings also focus on protecting health care workers from disease. We conclude this week s study with a thorough examination of precautions, relate them to various organisms, and finally apply their use to the healthcare environment. We investigate the potential hazards of sharps, hazardous chemicals, latex allergy, as well as slips, trips, and falls. Included in our studies this week are a sample blood borne pathogen exposure control plan and a sample hazard communication program. These can be used as templates to build plans and documents specific to your workplace. We conclude this lesson with a look at OSHA s general guidelines for preparing these documents. Environmental Services are essential, and must be maintained during emergencies. This week s readings discuss preparations to

Natural disasters in recent years, including Hurricane Katrina, have demonstrated the need for hospitals to maintain infection control during emergency health care operations. These measures include cleaning, sanitation, hygiene, and basic waste removal services. We will investigate the details of emergency preparation, and the unique challenges that emergencies can present to environmental services professionals. The standards for waste management, materials management, and personnel management will all be discussed as well. In addition, the readings address the unique cleaning, sanitation, and linen management needs required during an emergency. Explain the procedure for obtaining help from Federal agencies in emergency or disaster situations Contrast natural disasters, man/human made scenarios, and technological events; reflect on the ways in which environmental services can prepare for each type of event Identify the various types of healthcare waste, and describe the proper handling of each type in the event of an emergency Demonstrate the proper procedure for conducting a viable Hazard Vulnerability Analysis. We take a brief exploration into the microbiology of these organisms and profile their persistence in the healthcare environment.
