The Newslette r of the Hamon Arts Library Quarter Notes Volume 11, Issue 4 November, 2004 From the Director Change is good. Inside this issue: From the Director 1 Merriam-Webster s Online Dictionary defines change as: 1. to make different in some particular; 2. to replace with another. As we approach the end of fall term and look to the semester holiday break, the Hamon Library will be making some significant changes which you will discover upon your return in January. We will continue to replace carpeting in the library by completing replacement on the lower level. We will also take this opportunity to update the configuration of the Hamon Information Commons. Look for a more inviting, open space when you return for the spring semester, with more space at each workstation, and consolidated and updated multimedia carrels for both audio and video playback. As always, I welcome your comments on how we can improve our service to you. Best wishes for a happy holiday season. --Tinsley Silcox The Mildred Hawn Gallery 2 Have a Question? Ask a Librarian! In recent weeks, you may have noticed Ask a Librarian signs in our library and around campus. We are trying to promote the fact that library reference services are available wherever you find yourself not just at a library on campus! Not only do SMU students and faculty have access to our online catalog, databases and resources from home computers ( but during certain hours of the day, they can chat online with a librarian or ask for research assistance via at any time. For subjects unrelated to the arts, chat with a librarian or send an requesting help at If you have any arts related questions including art and art history until the Fine Arts Librarian position is filled please feel free to contact me! ~ Alisa Rata, Music, Theater & Dance Librarian arata@smu.edu
PAGE 2 QUARTER NOTES VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 The Mildred Hawn Gallery The Gallery is open Monday Saturday, 9am 5pm and Sunday, 1pm 5pm. For holiday hours, please call The Sketchbooks of Otis Dozier: A Centennial Celebration Through December 5, the Mildred Hawn Gallery in SMU s Hamon Arts Library is exhibiting thirty sketchbooks by Dallas artist Otis Dozier ( ), on loan from the Dallas Museum of Art. This exhibition chronicles the time that Dozier spent in the American West, on the Gulf Coast, and on the Mediterranean. Pages selected for display furnish a glimpse of subjects that interested the artist, such as the mountains and mining towns of Colorado, cowboys, and a procession of ox-drawn wagons in Spain. The books also contain a few sketches for future paintings, such as Fishermen, which was purchased from Dozier by New York s Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to the sketchbooks displayed, a computer kiosk enables visitors to leaf through a virtual representation of one of the sketchbooks in its entirety, as well as selections from three others. This element of the exhibition includes fifty-five images that have been scanned by the Dallas Museum of Art and supplied to SMU. The presentation was built by Heidi Hiteshue, a candidate for the Master of Library Science degree from Texas Woman's University. Heidi s ten years of experience in graphic and web design were of great help in this project, which fulfilled the practicum requirements for her degree. Otis Dozier s working on a sketch In conjunction with the Hawn Gallery s exhibition, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary is exhibiting several dozen of Dozier s paintings, along with works on paper, photographs, and selected archival materials from the Otis and Velma Davis Dozier Collection (which is housed in the Hamon s Jerry Bywaters Special Collections Wing), from November 6 through December 10. Gallery Hours: Mildred Hawn Gallery: Monday-Saturday, 9am - 5pm and Sunday, 1 pm-5 pm (for holiday hours, please call ). McKinney Avenue Contemporary (3120 McKinney Avenue, ): Wednesday - Saturday: 11 am - 10 pm and Sunday: 1-5 pm Check out our newest Online resource!
VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 QUARTER NOTES PAGE 3 Audio-visual News The More Things Change... Andy Worhol said, They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. He was right about that and we are certainly changing things in the A-V Information Commons here in the Hamon! And, that change all starts with me. For those of you who have not yet met me, my name is Jason Walker and I came to SMU in October after spending the last five years with a real estate investment company in East Texas. I am very excited to be here at the Hamon and am looking forward to a lot of great work in the A-V Information Commons. One of our main goals is to work on making our area run as efficiently and effectively as possible. We are working hard to make the commons a better place for students, faculty and staff to come and study, listen to recordings, watch videos or DVD s or use our computers for research or writing. We are also working hard to make sure that we have an accurate accounting of all our holdings so that when PONI says we have it WE HAVE IT! It is all about providing you with Quality Service Every time. We are striving to make every experience you have in our area a positive one. Not every change that is taking place in the commons is behind the scenes, however. At the beginning of the spring semester, patrons will notice a New and Improved Information Commons. Over the Christmas break, we will be laying new carpet, installing new furniture and consolidating much of our old A-V equipment into individual listening and viewing centers. All of this is to make the area a much more pleasant and hopefully productive place to visit. We hope that you will find the changes that are taking place to be positive and helpful. We are excited about the things that are happening here and are looking forward to innovative ideas for the future. If you need any assistance, please don t hesitate to call or come by. My door is always open! The Hamon Basement Now: Jason Walker Audio Visual Supervisor Walker@smu.edu The Hamon Basement in the Spring:? Come by and see what we ve done!
PAGE 4 QUARTER NOTES VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 Music, Theatre, Dance Highlight: Vocal Works by Simon Sargon, Professor of Music The vocal works of noted composer, pianist, and vocal coach, Simon Sargon, have been a recent focus of acquisitions for our collection. Sargon joined the music faculty of the Meadows School of the Arts in 1984 as the Director of Opera, and currently serves as Professor of Composition. His major works include several operas, multiple piano works, the orchestra work Tapestries, as well as many song cycles and choral compositions. The numerous vocal compositions we now house in the library include Sargon s Waves of the Sea, which won first prize in the National Association of Teachers of Singing national competition in We strive to support our faculty in any way we can, and providing access to their works for the community and students is one of the most important ways we can show our support. Should you notice any obvious gaps in our collections in this area, please do not hesitate to let us know. Alisa Rata, Music, Theater, & Dance Librarian Hamon Print Circulation Desk Reserve Information for Spring Semester 2005 Reserves Please remember to get your material in early for Spring Semester Forms can be picked up at the Circulation desk or downloaded from our webpage at: Electronic-Reserves! What? Yes, please don t hesitate to place your articles or photocopied items on E-Reserves. These copies are scanned into a file that can be accessed on PONI from remote locations. Students can read or print these reserves from computers in the library, their home, or dorm room. This is a great resource for the SMU community, and we are extremely proud to offer it. As always, please remember to turn in Reserve requests early and allow at least 7 days for processing. **Important: Consult Faculty Guide for important information regarding E-Reserves: Course Reserves Policies All Hamon reserve materials circulate for a two-hour loan period to ensure access for the greatest number of patrons. They may be used only within the library and cannot be renewed. Access to course reserve lists, call numbers, current status information, and electronic reserves is available through PONI.

PAGE 6 QUARTER NOTES VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 People at Hamon: A Hamon Profile of: Heidi Hiteshue Graduating in December 2004 with MLS degree from Texas Woman's University, Denton, TX Undergraduate degree: BLA, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Oklahoma State University Has worked in graphic and web design for past 10 years Has lived in Dallas since 1989 Enjoys movies, museums and gardening Some of you may have seen Heidi Hiteshue around the Hamon Library and wondered who she might be. She is an intern from TWU working in our library to finish her MLS degree. While you might not know who she is, you definitely know her work; that is, if you've visited the current Hawn Gallery exhibit. Heidi spent most of her internship at SMU working on the interactive online presentation displayed in the gallery, and I think it can be agreed that it is a stunning example of the type of work what she can do! She may not be around SMU after graduation, but we have all enjoyed working with her and seeing what she has produced. When asked about her experience in the Hamon Library, Heidi had this to say: The practicum opportunity offered by Hamon has provided an ideal learning environment for me. I've thoroughly enjoyed the projects and people who I've been fortunate to work with. Being able to apply computer skills to build a presentation for an art gallery exhibition has been incredible. Learning about archival and conservation practices has been very interesting and helpful. Experience using EAD software to create a finding aid is something I was unable to fit into my regular course scheduling, so having the chance to do this during the practicum is exciting. I've been able to see other libraries and offices on the SMU campus as well as visit an art conservator off campus. This experience has added greatly to my library science education. - Heidi Thank you, Heidi, and Good luck! Heidi Hiteshue, practicing archival matting in the Bywaters workroom A Fond Farewell... Good luck, Brandon! After five years serving as our Fine Arts Librarian, Brandon Pope has accepted a position with the Houston Public Library. Brandon s move to Houston coincides with his engagement, and he plans to wed in January. Brandon poses for one last picture with librarian Alisa Rata. We ll miss you Brandon! We wish Brandon all the best, and thank him for his dedicated service to the Hamon Library.
VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 QUARTER NOTES PAGE 7 G. William Jones Film Collection Film Shorts: Quarter notes become eighth notes as we report from the film vault. A broken water main caused flooding problems (thankfully there was no film or equipment damage) in the film lab and hall outside the vault. It is hoped, on this end, that repairs will be completed soon and we can return our operations to normal. We continue to get local and national inquiries from documentarians, museums, libraries, newsrooms and newspapers about our holdings and the availability of items being researched. Gifts to collection continue to arrive in the form of Laserdiscs, DVDs and VHS tapes. We consider ourselves fortunate that so many patrons remember the film collection by their wonderful donations. A new inventory of the 35mm, 16mm and VHS collection has been completed and copies can be provided on request. If anyone would like a copy, please contact me at reason@smu.edu and we will supply you with one. Please remember that these films are used for educational purposes and research. Please contact me make an appointment for your research or to schedule a film for class. A last minute Christmas gift idea can be found in the form of the DVD boxed set of the Tyler, Texas films. It is currently available for purchase. The order form can be found on the Internet at: Robert C. Eason, Jr. Film/Video Archivist G.
