(Spanish) 17

Services Remote Services. Making a reservation We can make a reservation when all the copies of a document are already borrowed: this is as easy as putting yourself down in a list so that we let you know when it is available. This option will be possible only when viewing the complete record of a document in the catalog, so do not forget to click on the icon Do you want to take a look at this tutorial?(spanish) 18

Services Remote Services. Important advices about the holds in order to improve how they work If there are several editions, but they are alike, make several reservations If you notice there are few copies of a document, please ask us to purchase additional ones If you want to know your position in the queue and the estimated waiting time, check your user status. If you are not interested in the reservation any more, please cancel it Inform us immediately if you are told you have a reserved document available and this does not concern you any more Be careful whith the additional materials: place the hold only on the item you are interested in (i.e. DVD with 2 discs: one with the film and another with the extras; documents in several volumes, ) If we do not contact you in a reasonable time, contact us: perhaps the delay is due to a return delay, to a very long queue or because you have made a reservation on special project or annual loan items. 19

Services Information Circulation Loan Remote services Requesting documents from other UC3M libraries Reservations Renewals Checking your user status Requests Asking questions and making suggestions Colections III. HOW TO SEARCH The search box The catalogue Browsing the shelves The searcher IV. SUMMING UP V. VIRTUAL GUIDED TOUR 26

How to search The search box The catalog The Searcher 27

Search tools How do they work? Go to the library web page It is important to log in Campus Global in order to access all the resources (including e-journals and e-books) 28

Search tools The Search box There are several options: Search: The default tab leads combines search in catalogue and electronic collections Catalogue: Catalogue tab is for physical collections of books and other documents, including some of the electronic resources. It allows you to make reservations, renewals, requests E-Journals: just for electronic journals E-books: just for electronic books Databases: databases can be found by title or subject e-archivo: UC3M scientific publications in open access 29

Search tools The catalogue The catalogue It includes the description, location and availability of all printed or audiovisual documents available in the Library: books, journals, DVDs, CDs, Theses... It consists of records with the basic data of each document: author, title, subject, etc. It also informs you about the library, floor or basement, and precise location of the document so that you can find it easily. Moreover it gives you information about its status: borrowed, reserved, etc. It provides you the several additional services we already know And all this without logging in Campus Global 30

Search tools The catalogue Catalogue Search There are two options for accessing the catalogue: Basic search at the top From the menu, access the advanced search at the catalog. 31

Search tools The catalogue Basic search It is faster and easier, and you can limit the search to any field, author, title, subject or periodical time. 32

Search tools The catalogue Advanced Search This search allows you to search simultaneously in different fields of each document record and it also lets you refine the search by selecting the library, language, format, type of loan, location, publication year and media (CD- ROM, DVD, Final Year Projects, etc ) 33

Search tools The catalogue Advanced Search If your teacher recommends that you consult some documents, you will be given their basic data: author, title We type them on the appropriate field. If you have any doubt, use the words or phrase option 34

Search tools The catalogue Advanced Search. Refining the search. Searching other materials Besides books, searching the catalogue you can also find: Music (CD-A) Videos (DVD) Maps And more Refining the search at the bottom of the catalogue will be of great help for you 35

Search tools The catalogue Advanced Search. An example Type in the Title field the name of a document, statgraphics for example. Select CD-ROM in the Item category1 dropdown menu 36

Search tools The catalogue Additional tools Some options make it easier for you to find certain collections Bibliografía recomendada por titulaciones: you can have a look at the recommended readings in each subject. New purchases by library or by subject Exams from 2000 to 2010 (only for Social Sciences and Law and Engineering Special collections: languages, audiovisual materials, literature, e- books, Final Year Projects, theses, etc. 37

Search tools The catalogue Viewing the records Here you have some search results. They produce an abbreviated information, so it is convenient for you to click on the button Details for further information. 38

Search tools The catalogue Viewing the records If all the copies were borrowed you would be able to make a reservation Information about the copies available at the different University libraries This book has 2 vols. Call numbers in Leganés: L/D = 2nd floor L/S = 1st floor 39

Search tools The catalogue Viewing the records The records contain different information They inform about the document basic data: author, title, year of publication, publisher, subject In addition some records offer more information such as the cover, table of contents, or summary 40

Search tools The catalogue Linking an electronic resource In the catalogue, you can find some documents with the full text available in electronic version. You can access them if you are logged in Campus Global. Even though our e-book collection is constantly increasing, most of the books in the library are printed. 41

Search tools The catalogue Other options. Exporting records Both in the abbreviated view and in the detailed view of the records, you can KEEP ( GUARDAR ) those interesting for you (or delete them if your change your mind). When you finish your selection you have to click on the option KEPT ( GUARDADOS ) and then you will view a screen in which you will be able to sort the records, select the library and choose the format. You can also print or the records. Please note this is NOT a reservation on the book, just keeps the record. 42

Search tools Browsing the shelves Browsing the shelves Once you have found an interesting document in the catalogue, how can you find it on the shelves? 43

Search tools Browsing the shelves Browsing the shelves Most of the bibliographic collection is ordered by a subject classification: the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). Each subject has a number, so that documents on the same academic field are gathered together. This number is used to form the CALL NUMBER, located on the spine of the book. In order to find a book in the shelves you need to know the call number S PEÑ Initial letter of the room where the document is located. Those documents located in the Humanities, Leganés, Colmenarejo and Puerta de Toledo libraries include the initials H/, L/, C/ and PT/ before the initial of the room. UDC number The three first letters of the author surname. They are used to order alphabetically those documents on the same subject and with the same UDC number 44

Search tools Browsing the shelves Browsing the shelves Find the UDC number in the signs hanging from the book shelves sides (each sign indicates the two extreme numbers) The labels on the shelves and the signs on the bookshelves sides can help you. 45

Search tools Browsing the shelves Browsing the shelves- Tracking a document Furthermore you will access directly to the books without searching the catalogue this is why the books are ordered by subjects. However note that you will not find: Books already borrowed or used by any user and which you could place a hold on Books on related subjects which can be interesting for you and which are located elsewhere. Other documents: Final Year Projects (PFCs), articles, special collections, etc. located elsewhere Books located in other libraries of the University 46

Search tools The searcher The searcher This tool allows you to search simultaneously in: The Library Catalogue E-Resources Collection: e-books, e-journals, databases e-archivo : our open acces archive of academic documents 47

Search tools The searcher The searcher It is very easy: you only need to use the Search tab and type the terms you are interested in Catalogue: Printed books and journals, audiovisual materials E-Archivo: Theses, articles, papers E-resources: Articles, journals, books, databases Search in one step within almost all the library resources. Please note we can not search in some resources. 48

Search tools The searcher The searcher This search includes full text access when available. You can refine your search by content type, subject terms or other characteristics. 49

Search tools The searcher 1 Introduce search terms The searcher How to search in 5 steps: 1.
