1 2016 Application Deadlines HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES DIVISION CAREER LADDER NURSING PROGRAM Associate Degree Advising Guide ( ) Any student interested in one of LCC s Career Ladder Nursing Program tracks is required to attend a mandatory prenursing seminar. Upcoming seminar dates are posted at: Plan to attend this seminar as soon as possible to be sure you understand the information in this guide. You cannot apply to this program unless you have attended this seminar. GENERAL INFORMATION Lansing Community College s Career Ladder Nursing Program is accredited by: Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN, Inc.) 3343 Peachtree Road, NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326; The Career Ladder Nursing Program offers traditional and non-traditional tracks to achieve the Practical Nurse (PN) Certificate of Achievement (Curriculum Code 0235) and/or the Registered Nurse (ADN) Associate in Applied Science Degree (Curriculum Code 0222). Nursing Tracks: 1. 2-Year/4-Semester Track offers classes and clinical sessions meeting mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings (generally weekdays) during the fall and spring semesters. This track is designed so that the student has class 4-5 days/week and can complete the program in two years. Applications are due March 1st. Seats are awarded June 1st. This track accepts up to 128 students. 64 students will have a fall semester start. 64 students will have a spring semester start. Placement into fall or spring is random. Grades from Spring semester of application year will be accepted if taken at LCC. 2. Advanced Standing to RN Track is designed for practical nurses, respiratory therapists, and paramedics (including those who were certified as EMT-Paramedics prior to 2002) who meet licensure and work experience criteria. Classes and clinical sessions meet mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings (weekdays or weekends) for three semesters. Applications are due October 1 st. Classes begin spring semester. This track accepts up to 32 students each year. Grades from fall semester of application year will be accepted for courses taken at LCC nd Degree Track is designed for individuals who possess a Bachelor s or higher degree in any major. Classes and clinical sessions meet mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings (weekdays or weekends). Applications are due March 1 st. Seats are awarded June 1 st. Classes begin fall semester. Grades from spring semester of application year will be accepted for courses taken at LCC. Classes in all tracks meet face-to-face. Some classes in the 2-year track are delivered in a hybrid format, using a combination of both the on-line and face-to-face formats. All courses in the Advanced Standing and 2 nd Degree tracks are hybrid, using the combination of face-to-face and on-line delivery formats. The PN Certificate of Achievement has been approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing since November This program consists of 28 semester credits of general education requirements and 20 semester credits of nursing requirements. These courses provide the basis for an in-depth study of the theory and nursing care of adults, children, and families. Clinical experiences include extended care facilities, hospitals, and community agencies where students provide nursing care to geriatric, medical, surgical, maternity, and pediatric patients. Graduates earn a Certificate of Achievement from Lansing Community College and are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination-Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN) following completion of NURS 150, NURS 160, NURS 165, and NURS 166. Those who pass the examination are entitled to practice as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Advanced Standing to RN students are not eligible for this option.

2 CAREER LADDER NURSING ADVISING GUIDE 2016 Application Deadlines Page 2 The RN Associate in Applied Science has been approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing since LCC s Career Ladder Nursing Program has held continuous accreditation since The program consists of the PN Program described above with an additional 9-12 semester credits of general education requirements and 20 semester credits of nursing requirements. These courses provide the basis for an indepth study of the theory and nursing care of children, adults, and families. Clinical experiences include hospitals, home health care agencies, rehabilitation units, and community health organizations where students provide nursing care to mental health, medical, surgical, maternity, and pediatric patients. Students are responsible for applying beginning leadership skills in supervising members of the health team. Student learning experiences progress from simple to complex and promote critical thinking development through application of the nursing process to the care of patients. Graduates earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science from LCC and are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) following completion of NURS 260, NURS 265, NURS 280, and NURS 285. Those who pass the examination are entitled to practice as Registered Nurses (RNs). ADMISSION PROTOCOL FOR ALL PROGRAM OPTIONS The student applicant is responsible for providing verification of having met all selective admission requirements in addition to the information contained in their current LCC official transcript. Co-requisites and prerequisites as well as other admission requirements must be verified by the Enrollment Services Office before a student is considered eligible to compete for a seat in the Career Ladder Nursing Program. Those with the highest number of points (in each program) will be selected for the available seats. Coursework completed during semester of the application year will be considered only if taken at LCC. Seats are awarded June 1 for the 2-Year Track and 2 nd Degree Track. Seats will be awarded November 1 for the Advanced Standing Track. Students who apply for more than one track (e.g. Traditional 2-year and 2 nd Degree) must declare their preference at the time of application to guide placement in the event their applications qualify for a seat in both tracks. Students will be notified of acceptance status by LCC . FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Students may find answers to frequently asked questions about the Career Ladder Nursing Program by accessing the nursing website at: HEALTH and VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Students who are selected for a seat will be required to submit evidence of a physical exam within six (6) months of starting the LCC Nursing Program and must meet required immunization standards. Details on Health and Vaccination requirements will be given at the orientation students attend after being admitted to the program.

3 CAREER LADDER NURSING ADVISING GUIDE 2016 Application Deadlines Page 3 MOTOR, COGNITIVE, and PSYCHOLOGICAL SKILLS ESSENTIAL FOR NURSING STUDENTS Learning disabilities affect students in different ways. Students may have difficulty remembering, understanding and/or expressing information. Students may be weak in spelling, writing, math, reading, problem solving, organization, and time management. If students feel they cannot meet the following guidelines and feel they have a learning disability they may contact the Office of Disability Support Services at (517) , or online at to receive an appropriate accommodation. 1. Essential motor skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes are: STRENGTH: perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull objects more than 50 pounds to transfer objects of more than 100 pounds. MANUAL DEXTERITY: perform motor skills such as standing, walking, handshaking; manipulative skills such as writing and typing; venipuncture, calibration of equipment. COORDINATION: perform body coordination such as walking, filing, retrieving equipment; eyehand coordination such as keyboard skills; tasks which require arm-hand steadiness such as taking blood pressure, calibration of tools and equipment, etc. MOBILITY: perform mobility skills such as walking, standing, occasionally prolonged standing or sitting in an uncomfortable position. VISUAL ABILITY: see objects far away, discriminate colors, and see objects closely as in reading faces, dials, monitors, syringes, medication labels, etc. HEARING: hear normal sounds with background noise and to distinguish sounds. TACTILE: prove tactile ability sufficient for physical assessment. Perform palpation, functions of physical examination and/or those related to therapeutic intervention, e.g., insertion of a catheter. 2. Essential cognitive skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes: CONCENTRATION: concentrate on details with moderate amount of interruptions, such as client requests, IVACs, alarms, calculating medication dosages, etc. ATTENTION SPAN: attend to task/functions for periods up to 60 minutes in length and to attend to tasks/functions for periods exceeding 60 minutes in length. CONCEPTUALIZATION: understand and relate to specific ideas, concepts, and theories generated and simultaneously discussed. MEMORY: remember task/assignments given to self and others over both short and long periods of time. CRITICAL THINKING: possess critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment. Be able to apply theoretical concepts to clinical settings. 3. Essential psychological skills required to meet the class and clinical practice outcomes: INTERPERSONAL: use interpersonal skills sufficient to interact with individuals, families, and groups from a variety of social, emotional, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. COMMUNICATION: communicate effectively for interaction with others in verbal and written form. Be able to explain treatment procedures and initiate health teaching. SUBSTANCE ABUSE: no current alcohol or drug abuse.

4 CAREER LADDER NURSING ADVISING GUIDE 2016 Application Deadlines Page 4 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The charter of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. Since OSHA was created in 1971, work-related deaths have decreased by approximately 62% and work-related injuries have decreased by 42%. As a nursing student, you will be exposed to a variety of substances within the work environment and hospital sites. You can expect exposure to blood, body tissues, and fluids. There is the potential of exposure to electrical hazards, hazardous waste materials, radiation, poisonous substances, chemicals, loud or unpleasant noises, and high stress emergency situations Upon acceptance into the Career Ladder Nursing Program, students will be notified regarding a mandatory online OSHA Blood-Borne Pathogen and Universal Precautions training session. Students also must complete and be in compliance with LCC s physical examination and immunization requirements. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK In order for the Career Ladder Nursing Program to be in compliance with Michigan Public Act 26 of 2006, a Criminal Background investigation is required of all students applying for admission (or readmission) to the program once they receive notice of seat award. (Please note that digital fingerprinting will be additionally required by the state of Michigan at the time of application for nursing licensure). Admission to the Career Ladder Nursing Program will be denied for the following: 1. Any felony conviction within 15 years + three years probation prior to application. 2. Any misdemeanor within ten years prior to application that involved or is similar to the following: Abuse, neglect, assault, battery Criminal sexual conduct Fraud or theft against a vulnerable adult (as defined by the Michigan penal code) This link will provide detailed information: The purpose of LCC s requirement for a Criminal Background Check is: 1. To identify any students ineligible to participate in the Nursing program due to a felony conviction or certain misdemeanors. This will assist the student in making career choices. 2. To act in good faith by not placing a student with a potential concern in a clinical site. 3. To conform with specific clinical site requirements. Some clinical sites may require additional testing, (i.e., drug screening), which students must comply with at their own expense. Any student arrested for any felony or misdemeanor after admission to the LCC Nursing Program must contact the Associate Dean (Chair) of the Community Health and Nursing Department at (517) within 72 hours of the arrest. Students subsequently convicted of any crime(s) listed above will be dismissed from the Career Ladder Nursing Program. 5 CAREER LADDER NURSING ADVISING GUIDE Fall 2016 Page 5 GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS/ PREREQUISITES FOR LCC s CAREER LADDER NURSING PROGRAM Students are not considered officially admitted to the Career Ladder Nursing Program while working on Admission Requirements. Official admission occurs once a student has been assigned a seat in the Career Ladder Nursing Program and has begun the 1 st semester of NURS courses. Attend one of the mandatory pre-nursing advising seminars offered by the Academic Advising Center. Upcoming seminar dates are posted at: Have official transcripts sent from all colleges attended to LCC. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the other college attended to: Lansing Community College, 1121-Enrollment Services, and P.O. Box 40010, Lansing, MI Transcripts must be received by LCC no later than May 1 of the year of application for 2-Year and 2 nd Degree track and no later than December 1 for the Advanced Standing track Achieve a minimum grade of 2.5 in each of the Career Ladder Nursing prerequisite courses listed on the following page with exception of NURS 200 which requires a 3.0. Students are allowed only 2 attempts to achieve the minimum grade required during any 5-year period (attempts prior to January 2011 with grades less than 2.5 will not be counted).* Submit a Selective Admissions Programs Application with a $50 application fee to the Payments Counter, Gannon Building in the Star Zone, no later than March 1 st for 2-Year and 2 nd Degree and October 1st for Advanced Standing. All required documentation must be included. Applicants to the Advanced Standing Track must provide evidence of the following: a. Current and unrestricted Michigan State Board of Nursing LPN licensure, or unrestricted Michigan Paramedic licensure, or successfully passing the National Registry Paramedic written and practical exams within two years of application, or registry by the National Board of Respiratory Care (14 credits will be awarded toward the ADN-RN degree for unrestricted licensure and experiential learning within the disciplines of LPN/Paramedic/RT) b. Written documentation on employer letterhead of having worked a minimum of 1040 hours during the 24 months prior to application (the equivalent of 20 hours per week for 12 months) as an LPN, or as a Paramedic, or as a Respiratory Therapist.

This includes grades of W. Any classes taken spring 2011 or later, whether taken at LCC or transferred in from another school are considered previous attempts. If a student has 2 attempts at a class (taken spring semester 2011 or later) and does not earn a the minimum required grade either time, then he/she must wait 5 years from the posting of the second unsuccessful attempt before repeating the class. The highest acceptable grade for each class in the left column of this list will be included in the GPA used for determining points (see Admission Ranking System). Requirements may be met by proficiency or other testing (e.g., AP, CLEP) but these courses will not be included when calculating GPA for Selective Admissions purposes. 2 This course is pass/fail and is not included in GPA. A minimum passing (P) grade is required. If not taken at LCC, must be the American Heart Association Health Care Provider, the American Red Cross Professional Rescuer, or the National Safety Council CPR & AED (HCP). 3 Requirement met with proof of Associate s or Bachelor s degree if no writing transfers to LCC to satisfy the writing requirement. 4 If this course was completed more than 8 years prior to the Career Ladder Nursing Program application deadline, it must be retaken. The LCC Nursing Program will accept a combination of the MSU course ANTR 350 and any class that transfers to LCC as BIOL202 to satisfy the combined prerequisite courses BIOL 201 & BIOL Although not required for graduation, BIOL 204 is required to transfer to a 4-year college/university. If taken, the credit and grade will be used in calculating GPA for admission and will increase selective admission points. 6 If completed more than 2 years prior to the application deadline, NURS200 must be retaken. 7 Although the college requirement for these courses is a grade of 2.0, the Nursing program requires a 2.5. The requirements for Communication and/or Global Perspective Core classes will be waived by Selective Admissions IF the student has an Associate s or Bachelor s degree AND there are NO classes completing the requirement(s) on the student s academic record. 8 Students who transfer BIOL 202 from another college will require an override to register for NURS courses including NURS 200.
