2 SCTS CT Forum Education Questionnaire At the 2014 CT Forum within the annual SCTS meeting in Edinburgh, an education questionnaire was circulated to discover the needs and wishes of the CT Forum participants. They requested: Any kind of training course, either one or two day courses. Either a national venue or in-house training. Both cardiac and thoracic training and also a mixture of specialties. The main issue with the annual meeting was: A lack of funding for nurses & AHP s to attend. A lack of awareness that the meeting existed at all, and that there was a related nursing & AHP stream within it.

4 Training & Courses We asked for suggestions re: training and courses. The responses included: Advanced nursing roles & AHP development academic & clinical Cardiac & Thoracic Advanced Course (like Tara s course) ACSA/SCTS collaborated training/study days Accredited course in post operative cardiac surgery management Expanded practice courses Advanced clinical skills in relation to cardiothoracic nursing Cardiology module/update CQUIN update Wound management update

5 Education courses on cardiac/thoracic/aortic topics taught by ANP s/np s/cnp s Skills workshop i.e. suturing for nurses Advanced cardiac & thoracic surgical skills Research methodology/qaly/proms/prems Nursing specific courses Shared practice forum CT research ideas and updates on current programmes Simulation courses

6 Scholarship opportunities: We asked if participants would be interested in applying for a scholarship either in the UK or overseas, and any suggestions of where this could be: Other centres in the UK for benchmarking & networking USA to shadow the CT PA s or ANP s to benchmark practice, audit practice, and to network Canada Japan re Aortic work Centres of excellence for specific areas i.e. SSI s, drain management Create a twinning process with overseas units to swap developments ERAS nurse specialist training / education Educational scholarship towards a PhD or research

7 What should SCTS provide? Support for research/audit Networking Access to the bulletin updates Preferential access to courses Reduced costs to courses

8 General comments or suggestions for how the CT Forum could expand: For the SCTS to standardise the role of the ANP, including creating SCTS ANP competencies, both practical and theoretical. Increased training & development opportunities, & involvement of all nurses & AHP s in CT. More frequent meetings CT nursing & AHP network with updates. It s the responsibility for all nurses & AHP s to disseminate the work of the CT Forum within the SCTS. Need more involvement. Encouragement to participate in the CT Forum more posters. For members to present & create discussion & forums locally to enable more staff to be aware and attend. Exposure! Networking after the meeting create a job swap.

9 On-line training access to policies, protocols, skills & procedures, i.e. removal of pacing wires. SCTS led CT courses as some universities have dropped these. Local courses. Practice presentations CT forum a daunting proposition. Standardisation of CT courses. Updates in practice.

10 The comments of two nursing students who participated in the 2014 Nursing & AHP CT Forum: An inspirational day of talks which would hugely benefit student nurses who are so used to hearing the negative side of nursing. The talks have given me great motivation as I prepare to begin my career in cardiac nursing. As a student nurse on my consolidation placement in CT Theatres, I feel privileged to have been able to attend this forum. To listen to such inspiring advanced nurse practitioners has encouraged me a great deal, and I can t wait to start my career. Thanks so much!
