Unit Number Unit Name Person Responsible Child Development Cindy Calhoun : 2 Operational The CHD Department will develop and use a standardized syllabus format and template for each Child Development course. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. A review of the instructors' syllabi showed that there was a lack of uniformity in the documents. Each instructor developed a syllabus, and there was no standardized format required by the department. 0 The Child Development Chairperson will develop a standardized syllabus format and template for each Child Development course. All syllabus formats and templates should be available to be used by the end of Fall Semester Syllabus formats and templates were developed for each CHD course and were used by faculty the end of Fall Semester The Chairperson will continue to monitor the syllabus for consistency. The Chairperson will seek input from faculty mebers for changes. By Spring Semester 2013, a standardized syllabi and format was developed for each CHD course. 1/6
: 3 Operational The students enrolled in Child Development(CHD) will have opportunities to complete courses in a flexible online format. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. Child Development courses are currently offered online. ne The CHD Chairperson will create an online CHD 204 course which will be available for Fall Semester This goal will be met if the course is available for online students in Fall Semester The CHD 204 course was developed and offered online as an option for students in Fall Semester A second CHD course will be offered online Spring Semester In the CHD Department offered no online courses. A distance CHD 204 course was developed and offered online in Fall Semester The CHD 204 course offered students an additional option for completing courses needed to earn their CHD Associate of Applied Science degree. 2/6
: 4 Operational The CHD Department will provide students with a Child Development Resource collection in the Learning Resource Center on the Opelika Campus in order to assure that CHD students have appropriate resource materials to enrich their learning. Goal 1 Provide students comprehensive and accessible instructional opportunities through community based education, dual enrollment, academic transfer, technical education, health science, and work force development programs. The Learning Resource Center does not have a Child Development Resource section. Students have to go to public libraries to borrow materials needed for classes. The materials are needed in the SUSCC Learning Resource Center because several Child Development courses require students to locate and use resource materials. June 2013 $ The CHD chairperson will work with the librarians to select and order books which will be placed in a collection for CHD students. This goal will be met when a Child Development Resource collection has been established and books are available for student use. The Child Development Resource collection was available for student use in the Learning Resource Center on the Opelika campus during Fall Semester This collection will be added to on an annual basis as needs demand and funds are available. In the LRC did not have a CHD resources section. A resource section was developed and was available for use in Fall Semester Resource materials needed in CHD classes are available through the SUSCC Learning Resource Centers. Students are able to more easily obtain the resources needed for the program. 3/6
Attachment childrenbks_received_2013[1].docx : 5 Student Learning At least 70% of students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of child development and the developmental characteristics of children from birth through age eight. Goal 2 Assist students in overcoming deficiences and acquiring skills fundamental to further academic and career achievement. Analysis of post test data revealed that 41% of students correctly answered questions relating to this competency. ne The faculty will add lectures on the contributions of Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget will be added to CHD 100 beginning Fall Semester The faculty will add additional information to CHD 100 lectures on developmental milestones in child growth. Instructor made exam. When given CHD 100 tests in December 2013, 63% of student incorrectly answered questions related to this competency. The faculty will add material for two questions that continue to be answered incorrectly by a majority of students. Faculty will add additional information on Erikson and Piaget to lectures. The faculty will address the wording of the questions to ensure that the questions are clearly stated and are not confusing or misleading. While data show a marked improvement, 41% to 63% of students who answered correctly, the objective of 70% of students answering correctly was not met. 4/6
: 7 Student Learning At least 70% of students will demonstrate an understanding of the causes of misbehavior in young children and ways to foster positive guidance in children. Goal 2 Assist students in overcoming deficiences and acquiring skills fundamental to further academic and career achievement. When given the multiple choice post test in the Fall Semester 2011, only 42% of students correctly answered questions related to this competency. ne 1. In Fall Semester 2013, CHD 100 classes will include discussions of causes of misbehavior in young children and ways to foster positive guidance in children. 2. In Fall Semester 2013, the terms, "pro social and anti social" will be used in CHD 100 classes. A multiple choice post test. When given the post test, 57% of students correctly answered questions related to causes of misbehavior in young children and ways to foster positive guidance in children Additional readings covering will be added to the CHD 100 course. Even though the number of students who answered questions relating to this learning outcome increased by 15% from 42% (2012) to 57% (2013) and improvement occurred, the 70% outcome was not met.
