2 Training on Anti Bullying In the summer of 2011, Anne Parry presented Being a Friend and Having a Friend Are Powerful Ways to Prevent Bullying for our staff in service day In 2012 Bias Free Foundations, led by theanti Defamation League, was presented to our staff on two in service days In the spring of 2013, we sponsored Spanish language Anti bullying Workshop for parents at the Carl Von Linne School In November 2013, we gave a presentation to all of our staff about our anti bullying initiative and are continuing to develop a cross program anti bullying curriculum
3 What Did We Learn? What bullying is and how to identify children who might be bullies or might be bullied The importance of identifying our own biases and stereotypes Practical ideas to implement in the classroom
4 Putting the Knowledge into Practice At Concordia Place our culture and community is peaceful and supportive for all At Concordia Place we created a culture and a community where bullying would not be tolerated At Concordia Place we created our Anti Bullying Policy, which is reviewed with all staff during orientation and all families at enrollment Concordia Place recognizes that bullying is a serious form of violence that can hurt a person in a permanent way affecting the rest of their lives. Bullying is the repeated physical or psychological intimidation of one person on another which creates a pattern of harassment and abuse. We realize that efforts to stop bullying must involve the entire center community, beginning with a center policy that states clearly that bullying is not acceptable and will not be tolerated by anyone regardless of age, gender or position

15 Emerging gleaders & Sprouting Out Interns We offer 125 thirteen to eighteen year old teens from 32 different middle & high schools year round conflict resolution skills & peace circles to: Build trust within the group that is ongoing Create e a safe space as an active & living environment e that takes aes work on all levels teens, interns, adults, parents, visiting instructors, guest speakers Guide everyone going gthrough conflicts personally & professionally on various levels & stages Display positive communication skills & express diverse beliefs, which takes work & continued effort in any group setting Implement valuable tools acquired & practiced here to empower teens to take action as bystanders in their social, home or academic life when a situation is crucial or at a critical moment of need

17 One thing to consider with teens & conflicts There are not always resolutions in situations of bullying or bullying behavior due to the inequality of power within the situation This is most evident when working with teens and their conflicts with individuals that hold either more physical, mental or emotional power over them whether perceived or real This is something adults forget when talking through options for resolutions in teen s conflicts, due to our established position of power in our lives This is very evident and comes up frequently in teen s internal family conflicts
18 Bullying Among the Older Generation Mature Bullying IS.. Exclusion. Blocking off seats for their little cliques at mealtimes and events Gossiping and whispering about people when they enter a room. Spreading lies and rumors about people Attempting to turn public space into private territory Criticizing, ridiculing, and lying about those who don't meet their standards of acceptance regarding race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or economic background
19 For Seniors at Concordia Place we Continue to promote principles of equality and respect for all seniors in our community Continue to review procedures to decrease the power of bullies in our program Continue to have open discussions, led by our Advocate Healthcare Parish, Maureen Swanson, educating our seniors, staff, and community members about bullying, its causes, and solutions
