1 Annual Goals for Communications Computer lab Receive permission and funding to install a new computer lab. Budget: Strategic 1,2 241,242 The Department of Communications received approval from the Office of the Provost for the addition of a new computer lab. This lab has required building modifications to accommodate the computer hardware and software. This lab will be available for classroom use beginning with the Fall 2011 semester. We were also able to add two high-end Mac computers for the Adobe Creative Suite to supplement existing computer needs. -Students receive additional instructions on audio and video editing. -We are able to implement a required writing class (COM 215 Media Writing). - This writing class supports not only the departmental curriculum initiatives but also the UNA goal of improving student writing and research skills. Budget: 4.00 Strategic Speakers Host at least one distinguished speaker for a campus event
2 Dr. Jim Martin Dr. Jim Martin identified our first departmental lecturer, Dr. Joseph Campbell, a journalism historian at American. This lecture was funded by a grant of $2,500 from an outside donor. The donor is interested in continuing to fund the event. -The lectureship enabled the department to engage students in multiple classes with an outside speaker. -We also used publicity and promotion of the event to draw community members to campus for the lecture. Visitors Make contact with regional media leaders to tell our story about UNA and the Department of Communications. Budget: 1.00 Strategic 1, For the first time in many years, the Department of Communications attended the Alabama Press Association Spring meeting. -The department hosted a luncheon and a dinner that provided opportunities for local newspaper publishers and editors to visit the campus to see our facilities and to interact with students. The department now has a relationship established with a retired newspaper publisher. We hope to use this relationship for strategic advice. Internationalization Host another international journalist. Schedule at least one campus-wide presentation by the journalist and use the journalist in our classes. Budget: ,3 2
3 Strategic 241 The International Broadcasting Bureau The Department of Communications hosted a visiting journalist from Serbia for the academic year. The journalist interacted with students and faculty, including serving as a lecturer in a number of classes. This was our second year to host a visiting journalist from Serbia. The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, has ended its participation in this exchange program but we hope to identify another embassy for participation. Curriculum Continue with curriculum matters as needed...minors, revisions in courses, deletions, other housekeeping changes. Budget: 0.00 Strategic All faculty in the department Seven new courses were offered during the academic year. These classes add new depth of content to the academic major and put the program on track to eventually seek accreditation. -Students have received new educational skills, knowledge and experiences that will improve their knowledge and job competitiveness as a result of the new classes. -Faculty in the Department of Communications are to be commended for their work in implementing the curriculum changes. 4 Budget: 0.00 Strategic 1,3 241,244 Dean Vagn Hansen Preliminary discussions have taken place about the need for a new video instructor. Much of the discussion has centered on hiring someone with time split between teaching and staff video production needs. The tight university budget has limited our ability to gain a new position. There appears to be genuine need for the university to increase its production of video materials. I am hopeful that a hybrid staff/faculty position may emerge. First Amendment Submit a grant proposal for a First Amendment grant for a campus program. Grant amount: $5,000. Budget: 5.00 Strategic 241,242 All faculty in the department The department received a $5,000 grant to promote First Amendment education. We hosted two speakers, planted a Liberty Tree, held a student video production contest, liberty/first Amendment displays on campus, hosted an educational arts workshop for area children, and held a First Amendment art display at a local museum, a community event and on-campus in the Department of Communications. This was a great project for the academic year and the grant helped us to plan for sustainable events that can be held in the future. 4
5 Student Learning Outcomes for Communications COM 201 Implement standardized procedures for COM 201, including course workbook. Budget: $ % Online: 50% Online: How Often: Assessed this Year? Every 2 years Yes All faculty teaching COM 201 Direct All class sections complete a comprehensive exam that includes a question series drawn from a pool of questions derived from the textbook materials. Speech assignments are intended to foster improvement over the course of the term. Students are encouraged to participate in a campus speech contest as an additional performance assessment. 6 The department uses a standardized grading form to score the two major class speeches. Scores from various sections and instructors can be compared to assess grading consistency. Curriculum: -Grading reviews show general consistency across class sections. -Rather than develop a workbook for the course, we have migrated to a stronger online component and a new textbook. We have committed to use this book and online component for two years. -Reviews of student scores from the comprehensive final suggest a need to place greater emphasis on the textbook materials. This is both a student need for time and attention to the textbook and an instructor need for consistency. A new textbook with an online component has been adopted. N/A ACEJMC Learning Outcomes Ensure that ACEJMC learning objectives are embedded in courses AND that faculty effectively reach the objectives. 7 Students complete a questionnaire during their freshman year and senior year to assess knowledge of the communications field. The curriculum requires students to complete internships or independent projects as a form of external interaction with professionals. We need to allow the passage of time to give use some perspective on the changes we have made. This is tied with the new curriculum. We did not have anyone graduate under the new curriculum in the academic year. This includes not only offering the course but ensuring that suitable lab facilities are available for teaching and student use. 8

We are pleased with the course results. The negative information we uncovered is that students at UNA are extremely poor writers. There is dire need for this course. The diagnostic course components showed a lack of fundamental language and grammar knowledge. We have been reminded of the worth of our decision to implement this course as a core degree requirement. The Department of Communications requested university funding to install a new computer lab to assist with teaching COM 215. Funding was obtained and the new lab will be online for Fall 2011 to assist with multiple sections of the course. Additionally, we have recruited another faculty member to help teach the class with a unified approach in all sections. 9

11 ACEJMC Learning Outcomes Students will: -understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press, including the right to dissent, to monitor and criticize power, and to assemble and petition for redress of grievances; -demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions in shaping communications; -demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of groups in a global society in relationship to communications; -understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images and information; -demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity; -think critically, creatively and independently; -conduct research and evaluate information by methods appropriate to the communications professions in which they work; -write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate for the communications professions, audiences and purposes they serve; - critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy and fairness, clarity, appropriate style and grammatical correctness; -apply basic numerical and statistical concepts; -apply tools and technologies appropriate for the communications professions in which they work. Curriculum: A new Mass Communication degree has been approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and implemented. The ACEJMC Learning outcomes are part of the reorientation of the degree programs in the Department of Communications, both the new mass communication degree and a change in the communication arts degree. Both degrees include a core of classes that respond to the ACEJMC Learning outcomes. New mass communication degree approved. Significant changes in the communications arts degree. Lab, administrative and building issues that must be addressed are being attended to...these include a new computer lab and support software, new check-sheets to assist students and academic advisors, and building changes-- classroom modifications to improve teaching and learning. 12
