2 Pursuing Innovation 3M Company has long encouraged employees to pursue ideas and concepts that might, at first, seem unusual or odd to some people. From those efforts, many innovations were born. In the late 1930s, one of 3M s scientists Al Boese began a journey to develop an inexpensive, noncorrosive backing that was fibrous, but not woven, for electrical tape. The journey took him through a decade of learning and experimentation that did not produce a better backing for electrical tape, but did lead to an amazing series of products using the new technology. Al Boese retired in the 1980s, however, the journey he started continues today: 3M is still finding new ways to refine and apply the nonwoven materials. Making the Connection One of the most successful uses of the 3M non-woven technology is the 3M personal respirator. The challenge for the product design is to protect individuals, while also allowing maximum comfort and breathability. The innovation required to do this was years of R&D research, resulting in a fundamental base for 3M HVAC air filters. It was the same principle, stop unwanted particles but maximizing airflow. Breathable Filtration Today, 3M is arguably considered the world s leading expert on breathable synthetic-based filtration products. 3 Our Story Building managers and HVAC engineers often face a fine balance of finding the best air filter solution for the building and keeping their operating budgets in check. Meeting environmental requirements for buildings is becoming increasingly important too. Energy consumption related to HVAC systems is a significant component of the overall energy consumption required to operate a building. Using energy efficient air handlers is one step towards reducing those operational costs. Choosing the right HVAC replacement filters helps maximize those savings opportunities. The greater the ability of a filter to load with debris without substantial increase in pressure drop, the greater the possible energy savings. HVAC engineers typically look for filters that have a low initial pressure drop, high filter loading capacity and the minimum required particle capture efficiency required. Filtration requirements, time constraints, energy, and sustainability efforts create a number of decisions that have to be researched and analyzed. Using HVAC filter and air handling unit performance data, 3M can help managers look for opportunities for improvement in associated Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Focusing on opportunities to lower energy consumption, reduce filter maintenance time and reduce waste stream volume, have provided favorable results. Total Cost of Ownership There are five components of the ownership and operating cost of HVAC filters: the cost to purchase the filters, the cost of the associated energy use, the cost of labor for installation and replacement, the cost of disposal, and the cost of shipping. These filters are an excellent choice for building owners and facility managers looking to reduce their energy utilization and minimize their total cost of operation, while still providing building occupants with high quality filtered air. 15 High Air Flow (HAF) Filters Microstructured Features Airflow The open channel construction of 3M HAF filters offers low initial airflow resistance, while its unique microstructure and electrostatic charge provides effective particle capture and retention. In certain applications, this may translate into fewer filter changeouts, reduced coil cleaning, and reduced maintenance costs. A balanced approach to improved air filtration 3M HAF Air Filters may offer an ideal alternative in applications where regular filter replacement is difficult or impractical, but where low airflow resistance is important. Developed using innovative 3M technologies, 3M HAF Air Filters are frameless, selfsupporting, and are constructed from an array of open flow channels. These filters are electrostatically charged for enhanced particle capture and retention. 3M HAF Air Filters are available with an antimicrobial agent to help inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the filter media. Users should be aware that mold and mildew may grow on captured particles that build up over time on the filter.
