Key Findings Trends indicate a growing emphasis on lab safety in schools and universities and increasing compliance to PPE by students. This can be explained by a steady increase in the financial liability costs associated with lab-related accidents. Employment trends indicate a strong growth in the overall number of researchers and technicians engaged in scientific research and development (R&D) working in medical and diagnostic labs. This can be explained by an increase in budgetary allocations by governments of North America and Western Europe for encouraging innovation in the scientific R&D and healthcare sectors. Limited product differentiation, specifically for disposable gloves, face masks, particulate respirators, and protective clothing has lead to a commoditized market. A rise in import of these products from Asian countries results in a downward price pressure for this market. Distributors have a strong position in the supply chain, and nearly all PPE for labs and research facilities are sold through specialty distributors. Besides PPE, these distributors also supply scientific lab equipment and other consumables such as first aid kits, signs and warning devices, emergency eyewash and showers, as well as hazardous material containment and cleanup supplies. 5

Introduction This market insight looks at the opportunities for PPE in labs and research facilities across North America and Western Europe. Work in labs and research facilities exposes researchers, students, and technicians to a number of physical, chemical, and biological hazards, as well as to musculoskeletal stresses. This makes PPE an integral part of lab safety, which is employed as the last line of defense after implementation of proper administrative and engineering controls. PPE is also required to meet lab hygiene standards, prevent contamination, and ensure quality of the research. Adequate training for researchers in the selection, usage, and maintenance remains the key to ensure the success of a PPE program. Most labs and research facilities in North America and Western Europe are characterized by high awareness levels and compliance rates for PPE, besides showing a preference for premium quality products. On a relative scale, academic labs in schools and universities experience proportionally higher incidents of work-related injuries and illnesses in comparison to other labs and research facilities. This is primarily due to a lack in adequate training for students regarding selection and use of PPE for specific hazards. 7

Definitions and Scope of Research Definitions Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to specialized equipment worn by researchers, students, and technicians in labs and research facilities to protect them from serious injuries and illnesses as a consequence of exposure to workplace related hazards. Physical, chemical, biological, radiological, thermal, and other hazards vary across facilities and pose serious risk to the health and well being of the employees. In sensitive facilities, the role of PPE is not only to protect employees but also to prevent cross contamination. Hard hats, bump caps, safety glasses and goggles, ear muffs and plugs, respirators, coveralls, and safety gloves are examples of PPE. Labs and research facilities include all buildings that provide a controlled environment where scientific or technological research, experiments, and measurements may be conducted, generally focusing on a specific area. Scope of Research This research service will focus on PPE opportunities in all labs and research facilities across North America and Western Europe. The scope of this research covers academic labs, industrial labs, medical and diagnostic labs as well as law enforcement forensics labs. Specialized detection equipment that includes gas detectors and radiation dosimeters are not covered in this study. 8

Labs and Research Facility Types PPE in Labs and Research Facilities: Labs and Research Facility Types, North America and Western Europe, 2013 Academic Includes all school, college, and university labs as well as government-funded scientific R&D facilities PPE in Labs and Research Facilities Industrial Medical and Diagnostic Consists of all government and private-owned industrial quality control labs that support production. Also includes industrial R&D facilities Comprised of all government and private-owned labs and facilities dedicated to healthcare as well as development of medical science Law Enforcement Forensics Includes all forensics labs associated with law enforcement departments 9

Segmentation PPE in Labs and Research Facilities: Segmentation, North America and Western Europe, 2013 Above the neck protection Respiratory protection PPE in Labs and Research Facilities Hand protection Body protection Protective footwear 10

Selection Criteria PPE in Labs and Research Facilities: Selection Criteria, North America and Western Europe, 2013 Factor Comfort Cost Durability Functionality Maintenance Description Should be breathable, light weight, non-irritating to skin, and easy to wear Should be reasonable, affordable, and proportional to the function it serves Should be resistant to abrasions and degradation, strong, and provide an adequate life span Includes the ability to protect individuals from microbes, contaminated fluids, aerosols, and infections Should be easy to decontaminate, clean, and dispose of 11
