2 BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME

3 The IT is the FRG. BUILD A SUCCESSFUL FRG BY THE FOLLOWING: Families and Soldiers This is the reason for the FRG! They are your constituents Responsive Be responsive to the needs of the commander and families Give 2 ways to give that makes an FRG a success Give of your time the time needed to lead an effective FRG Give opportunities to provide guidance, education, and fun things to do for your families FRGs, and YOU as a volunteer leader, are a key in providing an enhanced quality of life for the New Jersey National Guard Soldiers, their families, and the communities in which they live.

4 The THEY are the Soldiers and Families Familiarize Yourself With Your Soldiers and Families: People want to come to an FRG that s fun and full of people who care Introduce yourself to your Soldiers and families You are their POC to the unit and commander FRG updates/briefings/newsletters/joint events Provide training and education opportunities that interest the Soldiers and families Work with your FRSA to find useful, relevant, and fun topics of interest Topics don t always have to be serious!

5 MISSION The mission of the FRG is to help meet the commands requirement for Soldiers and families to be prepared for deployments through: Communication Support and Involvement of FRG members Synergy Education - two meanings Leaders becoming self sufficient in their job Helping Soldiers and Families prepare for deployments Training Resources To accomplish the mission successfully, NGB s goal is an FRG supporting our Soldiers and families every day not just during deployments!

6 There are units within New Jersey that range from 10 s of Soldiers to 100 s of Soldiers. There are units within New Jersey that are the tip of the spear to support units, to specialized units that work with various Federal & non-federal agencies. They all have their own flavor and each one is distinct from all the other units within New Jersey.

7 Remain Positive Remember that as the FRG lead team, you represent your group and unit, so Treat each experience as a success because YOU influence others Frustration is normal but don t let it consume you Seek out guidance from your commander fellow leaders People want to be around positive people. If you re positive families are much more likely to participate! If you are meeting your commanders intent, following regulatory guidance, and are reaching your constituents you are successful!

We want people to come to FRGs Educational/Fun organized, meetings Activities/Programming for youth Coordinate training for FRG leaders and family members (FRSA) Sharing ideas TOGETHER Both positive and negative (not slanderous) ideas free to discuss Provide coping mechanisms/discuss how to deal with issues Learning experience! Positive outlet for all members

10 FRG s are important to the overall readiness of the New Jersey National Guard Be a positive leader who includes the command, other leaders, and the families Provide both educational and fun things for families to do Keep an open and respectful FRG free from retribution

11 Where Do We Go From Here? The World is changing and so are we Don t know what the future holds but our Military members WILL be involved The goal is a self sustaining FRG that supports the Soldiers and family members every day not just during deployments
