Problem Gambling Your Guide to Understanding
CONTENTS How common is problem What are the signs of problem Who can be affected by problem How is problem gambling diagnosed? What is the treatment for problem gamblng? Where can I get more help? This brochure is developed together with the Ministry of Health s Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of Gambling Disorders. Clinical Practice Guidelines are recommendations to help doctors and patients make appropriate choices about the patient care based on the best scientific evidence currently available. These guidelines do not replace the judgment of the attending doctor. It is important to remember that each person is different, and the Clinical Practice Guidelines may not always apply to everyone. Although this booklet has been primarily written for patients with gambling disorders, it may also be useful to their family members and care givers.
For most Singaporeans, gambling is an enjoyable leisure or social activity. But for some, it can become a problem as they keep gambling despite the toll it takes on their life. Problem gambling causes more than just financial harm. It can affect your health, family, relationships and work as well. Copyright HPB B EC Dec
How common is problem A survey in 2008 estimated that nearly 3% of Singaporeans aged 18 years and above were affected by gambling disorders which include pathological gambling. Pathological gambling refers to the most severe form of excessive gambling behaviour which has become destructive. What are the signs of problem Signs of problem gambling include: Gambling more often than intended Gambling longer than intended Gambling to cope with stress, bad feelings or problems in life Feeling restless or irritable when not gambling Borrowing money to gamble or to ease financial problems caused by gambling Lying to hide the time and money spent on gambling Chasing losses and committing illegal acts to get money for gambling Neglecting family, work or studies to gamble Risking important relationships and job as a result of gambling Continuing to gamble despite knowing the problems caused by gambling 4
Who can be affected by problem Problem gamblers can range from adolescents to elderly folks. Problem gambling is a hidden addiction and those affected may look normal to other people. However, if left untreated, it can destroy the lives of the gamblers, their loved ones, family members and others. 5
How is problem gambling diagnosed? Screening is recommended if you gamble regularly and it becomes a habit for you. A simple self-screening test is available on the National Council on Problem Gambling website ( html). Take the test to know if you are affected by problem gambling. A positive screening needs further evaluation by psychiatrists and addiction specialists to confirm the diagnosis and severity of problem gambling. Those affected by problem gambling can also suffer from depression, suicidal tendencies, mental stress, and alcohol and drug abuse. Seek your doctor s advice for appropriate treatment for these conditions. 6
What is the treatment for problem Getting treatment early can prevent problem gambling from getting worse. Treatment options include: 1. Medications Mood stabilisers and medications for depression and anxiety disorders are useful in reducing gambling urges and the impulsiveness to gamble. 2. Psychological therapy Psychological therapy works by correcting wrong beliefs about gambling, cutting down gambling urges and reducing gambling behaviour. 3. Self-help groups Get someone to help you. Self-help groups such as Gamblers Anonymous provide mutual support if you are affected by problem gambling. Friends and family support groups can also support family members and loved ones of those affected by problem gambling. 7
Some practical tips to break the gambling habit include: Limiting access to money. Seeking help from a financial counsellor to manage and plan your finances and repayment if you are facing financial problems caused by gambling. Restricting entry into gambling venues (e.g. self and family exclusion orders). Where can I get more help? 1. Call National Problem Gambling Helpline ( ) to speak to gambling addiction counsellors for any queries related to gambling problems. The National Problem Gambling Helpline is currently available 24 hours a day and all calls are confidential. 2. Visit your doctor for advice on problem gambling. 8
