The PolyU is the largest tertiary institution in Hong Kong with approximately 22,000 full-time and parttime students. In addition to meeting Hong Kong s manpower requirements, the PolyU makes a significant contribution towards the territory s success by providing the public and private sectors with an expanding range of consultancy, professional training, and applied research services. Through these activities, we maintain a strong partnership with Hong Kong s business and industrial sectors. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering hosts the IGDS in Hong Kong and is equipped with world class facilities for both teaching and research that includes the: Microsoft Enterprise Systems Centre Digital Factory Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Centre The University of Warwick is one of Britain s leading universities and is a centre of excellence in research and development, and technology transfer. It is committed to providing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the highest quality. The WMG was founded by Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya to bridge the gap in the UK between the University and manufacturing industry. Its mission was, and remains, to bring academic rigour and industrial relevance to the teaching and research of the University. In addition to its undergraduate students, it has over 1,200 postgraduates and about 150 doctoral students. It also trains around 5,000 industrialists every year and has grown into one of the most successful institutions of its type in the world. Ranked 6th (out of 119) among UK universities in The Guardian University Guide 2012

3 R A PROUD HISTORY United Kingdom The IGDS commenced in 1981 by the WMG of The University of Warwick to strengthen collaboration between industry and the University, to bring academic rigour to industry and to train executives who work there. The programme has involved over 40 blue-chip manufacturing and engineering companies including: British Aerospace British Airways GKN London Electricity Lucas Varity Raychem Rolls-Royce Rover Group Royal Ordanance Short Brothers Hong Kong The IGDS was launched in Hong Kong in 1990 with joint collaboration between The University of Warwick and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. PROGRAMMES The Integrated Graduate Development Scheme (IGDS) offers a range of postgraduate programmes and awards: Master of Science, MSc* in Engineering Business Management Manufacturing Systems Engineering Postgraduate Award, PgA in Supply Chain and Logistics Management Engineering Business Management Manufacturing Systems Engineering Doctor of Engineering, EngD The EngD is an alternative to the PhD It is better suited to industry s needs, being highly flexible and; is able to accommodate participants at any stage of their career * Master of Science, MSc is jointly awarded by the PolyU and the University of Warwick Postgraduate Awards and Doctor of Engineering are awarded by the University of Warwick

4 FEATURES FEATURES FEATURES FEATURES Joint Award The Master of Science degrees are jointly awarded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The University of Warwick. Global Networking and Recognition The IGDS is offered through an international network in UK, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Thailand, as well as Hong Kong. The IGDS is assessed on the same basis as in the UK and other IGDS centres. This global network offers flexibility to participants who are on business trips enabling them to attend modules outside Hong Kong. Flexible Study Attendance can be full-time or part-time. About modules from a pool of over 25 are offered each year. Candidates are required to pass 9 modules and a project within the study period. World Class Support The programme is taught by academic staff from both The University of Warwick,UK and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Specialists and experts from other universities, industry, and research associations are invited as guest speakers. Personal Networking The IGDS provides the opportunity for building networks among participants from industry, academia, and the public sectors. Participants come from diverse industrial and multi-disciplinary backgrounds and stimulate excellent interaction when tackling real business problems during small group syndicate sessions. You can learn much from other participants in addition to the lecturers and guest speakers.

6 MSc in Engineering Business Management (Joint Award) in Manufacturing Systems Engineering (Joint Award) Programme Aims and Objectives This industry-led programme adopts a multi-disciplinary approach. It aims to develop students to: Understand the importance of information technology, total quality management, and business and management techniques in the operation and control of business and manufacturing systems; Become leaders of change in business improvement for engineering and other companies, achieved through a broad-based vocational postgraduate education, providing a thorough understanding of the key elements of business and technology. Entrance Requirements Bachelor s Degree with Honours; or Post-experience Diploma or Higher Diploma with appropriate working experience; or Mature applicants with significant relevant experience will be considered on individual merit. Programme Structure and Assessment Assessment is based on post-module assignments and in some cases, in-module assessment. There are no final written examinations. After attendance of each module, participants undertake a post-module assignment aimed at the practical application of module material usually in their place of work or related to a real work environment. The resulting report is marked and assessed by University tutors. Each participant also undertakes a major project, either in the organisation where they work or in an organisation where they have experience, co-supervised by both an academic, and an industrial supervisor or a co-examiner. 8 PgA Postgraduate Award in Programme Aims and Objectives This newly introduced industry led programme is professionally focused and adopts a specialisation approach. It aims to advance, widen and update participants knowledge to tackle the problems they face in their work environment. 9 EngD Engineering Doctorate The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is a part-time doctorate programme, typically of 4 years duration. Admission to the EngD in Hong Kong is normally preceded by a Post-graduate Award(PgA), during which the candidate not only fulfills the requirement of that award, but also prepares (through additional development work) for potential transfer to the EngD at a later stage. The PgA will typically take a year for completion, and if transfer to EngD is successful, credits earned for the PgA will be carried, resulting in an EngD registration of typically 3 years. The requirements of the EngD are primarily met through project work which may consist of one or more significant projects. These can cover the whole spectrum of engineering, i.e. from management to technology. It is important however, that the projects have the potential for innovation and are of significance to the business where they are conducted. Commitment to the EngD All participants are registered part-time on the degree. In the case of company employees, it is therefore essential that their day to day work and their EngD project work have similarity. Attendance on modules varies from two to six weeks per year depending on prior qualifications and experience of the participant. In addition, it is preferable to allow at least one day per month to visit the academic mentor and to attend individual workshops and seminars connected with the EngD. Entrance Requirements Master s Degree with significant relevant experience Normally, potential participants are required to develop a project proposal that has the potential for innovation and is significant to their working environment. Assessments for PgA and EngD The PgA requires the successful completion of 3 MSc level modules, usually within the 1 year registration period. In addition, successful transfer to the EngD requires satisfactory assessment of a written assignment, specifically related to the proposed topic of EngD research. The EngD is assessed by means of a portfolio. This is compiled over the period of registration. It includes post-module work, but its main content is based on research work. Substantial submissions need to be made at least once per year. The portfolio and the participant are examined by a small panel of industrialists and academics appointed by the University. In summary, IGDS programme enlarged the perspective of my work. I can now analyse problems in a comprehensive manner.
