2 Welcome to Ealing Law School Welcome to Ealing Law School and our Masters degree course in Legal Practice. The Law School teaches courses from pre-degree to Ph.D; but the core of our work is the undergraduate LLB which is recognised by the legal professions in the UK as a qualifying law degree. We also offer the professional courses of the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and the Graduate Diploma in Law, otherwise known as the Common Professional Exam (CPE). Our aim is to provide a masters course that will prepare students for careers in the global economy with multinational business and banking corporations. University of West London operates on several sites. Lectures, workshops and tutorials take place in the main Teaching Centre at the St Mary s campus. Teaching staff have their offices in the LRC building on the St Mary s site. Their internal telephone extensions are detailed in the module study guides, and you will also find them at the end of this handbook. All staff have a voic facility for you to leave messages in their absence and an address. Each module is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, small group sessions, practical experience and workshops. One module will be taught each week, over three hours of teaching time. In addition, students will complete a 15,000 word Dissertation, which will be supported by a Research Methodology module taught on a Friday afternoon. The prevailing strategy is to provide a masters course that will prepare students for careers in the world of legal practice with private or government organisations, multinational business, banking corporations and human resources. Equally, at the Law School, you will meet students from all walks of life and different countries. We hope you will take full advantage, both academically and socially, of what the Law School offers, including social events, careers fairs, mooting, debating and pro-bono work. We are delighted that you will be joining us as a student this year and look forward to welcoming you. There is too much to tell you about here so be sure to be at the induction programme when we have got lots more really important information for you. Of course, there is some boring form filling to ensure we get you registered for everything but we are also really looking forward to meeting you and answering the questions you are bound to have about this important decision you have made about your future here with us and your longer term career plans. The objective of this pre-course information is to answer some of the frequently asked questions that you may have. We have enclosed a 2

This booklet is designed to assist you in understanding the structure of the LL.M in Legal Practice programme. It will act as a valuable reference document throughout your period of study at Ealing Law School, University of West London. The outline may not provide answers to all your questions. If you have any further questions or need more information about the programme or the University, please don t hesitate to contact myself. 5 The LL.M Programme Course Outline Philosophy and Rationale The LL.M in Legal Practice enables students to develop analytical and research skills necessary to research and write a detailed piece of research relevant to the practice of law. As such it complements the compulsory vocational stage of learning required to embark on a career in law. It will enable students to apply academic understanding and research techniques to the production of a dissertation. It will also improve the competitiveness of the student in an increasingly specialised sector of the market. Aims of the Course To be eligible for an award of Master of Laws from the University of West London, students are required to meet the appropriate level (7) of attainment. An LL.M award requires a student to demonstrate: An understanding of knowledge that is both systematic and critical in its awareness of current issues in the field or discipline of study, this can be informed by academic study or professional practice; An advanced understanding and ability to synthesise various techniques in research and advanced scholarship; An advanced level of originality in the application of knowledge and the practical understanding of how a variety of established techniques of research can be used to hypothesise, interpret and further knowledge of that discipline; Be conceptually aware, critically evaluating current research and advanced scholarly activity, methodology and appropriately hypothesise. Learning Design, Coherence and Progression between modules Starting from a compulsory research methodology module, students are then able to undertake their own research on a topic of especial interest to them related to the practice of law. Research Methodology (20 Credits) This module provides a thorough basis for Masters level research methods. The module is free-standing, but links easily with the subsequent or concurrent preparation of your dissertation. The module addresses core content areas appropriate to research in a legal context, and supports participants to achieve appropriate levels of competence in these areas. It will be equally relevant to 5

6 all participants who wish to broaden their armoury of research tools, and deepen their understanding of issues relating to legal, financial and economic research whether that is for work-related purposes or in support of further academic work. Dissertation (40 Credits) The Dissertation provides the student the opportunity to demonstrate the mastery of a particular subject area by the completion of an extended piece of self-managed research. The aim of the dissertation is to develop and test the student s ability to conceptualise, appraise and critically evaluate a significant topic in the field of legal issues relating to legal practice and through a process of research. It will involve conducting both primary and secondary research in the chosen topic / discipline area and presenting the research and its findings in the form of a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation. Submission of dissertations will be one year after the start of the programme for full-time students and after two years for part-time students. Thus, if you are a September start it will be 31 st August, if a February start, it will be 31 st April the following year. During the induction at the start of the programme, students will be advised on the requirement of dissertation. Throughout the year, they will meet with a dissertation tutor. At the start of their course all students will undertake the Research Methodology Module and then will additionally have the summer period free to work exclusively on the dissertation. 6

7 Course Delivery The LL.M course will be offered as a twelve month part-time course. This will include campus attendance, self-directed and facilitated learning and offcampus experiential learning, live cases, problem solving decision making in syndicate groups. The Research Methodology module will be delivered in 3 hour sessions over a 15 week period. This reflects the depth of each module and will allow the time for you to develop the requisite skills and knowledge required by the assessments. Ealing Law School will use a diversity of teaching strategies i.e. workshops, case studies, interactive seminars and lectures to develop students awareness, understanding and critical ability. The methods used to guide and facilitate the learning will include: - Dissemination of information via lectures and the Internet. - Seminars and plenary sessions to promote discussion, debate and disagreement. - Workshops to provide students with the opportunities to develop communication and presentation skills. - Use of case studies/live cases to provide experience of particular legal issues of international finance. - Directed reading through the use of essential texts and articles/handouts. - Guest speakers to articulate industry s current approaches, views and ideas on particular issues. UWL is committed to a clear feedback policy and time frames will be included in the Module Study Guides and in this Handbook. 7

8 Two Entry Points It is possible to start the programme in October or February. The following grids set out the semesters you will take the various modules. There are two semesters in the Academic Year; these start in October or February. 9 Forms of assessment: The Research Methodology module will have a formative assessment which will not count towards your final module mark entailing completion of a summary research proposal of approximately 1,000 words. A summative assessment comprising a detailed research proposal of not more than 2,000 words must then be completed. Summative means that the marks achieved will count towards your final module mark. Feedback will normally be given within 2 weeks of submitting coursework and within 3 weeks of the Examination Board Finally Please check carefully the instructions in your joining letter and be prepared to join us for the induction programme that has been designed to settle you into the school introduce you to all the academic and social facilities of the university and prepare you for your course. 9
