2 STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK for Student Development Dear New Transfer Student, Congratulations on your acceptance to the State University of New York at New altz. Attendance at one of the Transfer Course Registration and Orientation rograms is required for newly matriculated degree applicants in order for us to ensure accurate transfer credits, advising and course selection. lease note: Attending this program is a one-time requirement for students matriculating for a Bachelor s Degree. Once you have attended New altz for a semester, in your future semesters you will be able to pre-register for courses and add/drop courses on the web. lease make any personal or work accommodations necessary to ensure your attendance. lease be aware that the program schedule includes locations that will require walking between various buildings. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk throughout the day. We would like to make you aware that if you choose to bring a guest, they will join you at the Welcome, the Services Fair, and the Academic Requirements Session. However, they cannot accompany you to the academic advising and registration session which begins at 12:00 noon. They will attend a separate luncheon with administrators while you are being advised, and will rejoin you when you have completed the program. If you are looking for resources for off-campus housing options, the following two sources can be accessed on the web: Off-Campus Housing Bulletin Board at housingbb.newpaltz.edu, and the weekly New altz Times online at (click on Classifieds, click on New altz rentals ). If you make appointments to look at available off-campus housing on the day of orientation, please make those appointments after 4pm. [lease note the following exception: Those students who already hold a BA or BS and are seeking a Second Bachelor s Degree do not need to attend these sessions for Bachelor s candidates. Instead, you are asked to contact (845) and ask for your appropriate academic department to schedule a meeting with an advisor. You will need to get your ID card and parking hang tag when you are on campus.] For any accepted applicant not planning to attend New altz at this time, you must notify the Office of Undergraduate Admission at admissions@newpaltz.edu. lease be sure to include your name in the and state that you are an accepted transfer student who is not planning to attend New altz. QUESTIONS? If you have any questions not addressed in this booklet, do not hesitate to contact the for Student Development at (845) Again, congratulations, and we look forward to meeting you. Sincerely, Robin Cohen-La Valle Associate Dean of Students 1
3 The 6 steps essential to register for classes: ay your re-enrollment Deposit Each transfer applicant received an application acknowledgement notification which included a personal New altz Computer User ID (NCUID). This number begins with N0 (N + zero, plus 7 additional digits.) If you have not already done so, you must first pay your re-enrollment Deposit (ED.) This deposit is NOT an additional fee; it is a down-payment towards your bill, holds your space at New altz, and will be deducted from the bill you receive once you have registered for classes. lease log on to my.newpaltz.edu, click on accepted student, and pay your ED online with VISA, MasterCard or AMEX. If you need additional assistance processing your payment, call the Office of Student Accounts at (845) Remember: you will not be able to select a session or register for classes unless your deposit is paid. Sign up early to ensure your first choice There are a limited number of spaces available in each Transfer Course Registration and Orientation session for each major. After reading these Six Steps, go to my.newpaltz.edu and sign-up for one of the sessions (lease indicate your first and second choice). If you reserve online, you can use VISA, AMEX, MasterCard or a one-time Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) from your checking account to pay for your orientation conference fee. The $35 fee includes a complete program, materials, morning refreshments, lunch and New altz souvenir. (Guests pay a fee of $30 and receive refreshments, lunch and a New altz souvenir. lease note that family/guests can accompany you to all sessions except for advising and course selection). Walk-ins cannot be accommodated, as specific faculty advising is arranged for majors in advance. If you prefer to reserve by mail, print out the Reservation Form (page 4) and send in your payment. EFT cannot be done by mail, only credit cards, checks or money orders. lease indicate your first and second choice, and send your form to us at the mailing address at the bottom of the form. You will receive a confirmation Once we have processed your reservation, we will confirm your session date by . Be prepared by reviewing the Dear Transfer Student letter and Questions Frequently Asked by Incoming Transfer Students that follows Bring two things with you $20 for your college I.D. card. You will have your photo taken for your card and will receive the I.D. before you leave. lease bring this additional $20 with you on the day of Transfer Course Registration and Orientation (payable by cash, check, Master or VISA card) to pay the one-time cost of your I.D. An official hoto I.D. is required from you on that day: e.g. driver s license, school photo I.D., state issued I.D., or passport. (If none are available, please bring two other forms of I.D.) A list of your Spring 2014 classes if you are currently enrolled at a college (and your grades if they have been posted in time) ark in the designated lot and check-in at the student union at 8:30am Refer to the campus map which directs you to Rt. 32 arking (Lot #28). A parking permit is not required on the day of the program, but this lot is the only one approved for no ticketing on these dates for Transfer Orientation. You will learn about how to apply for a Vehicle Registration/Hang Tag application for your first semester when you attend the program. You MUST make a reservation. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. 2
4 Questions frequently asked by incoming transfer students Q Why do I need to attend a Transfer Course Registration and Orientation session? A It is critical for all matriculating students to attend a session as this is the one time the college s academic requirements are reviewed. In addition, credit review, advising and course selection takes place on this day. Q How long does the program run? A The average program lasts approximately 4 5 hours, depending on your specific advising needs and course registration process. Q How is the program structured? A The program includes an official welcome to the University, a review of academic degree requirements and the tools necessary to build your course schedule. In addition to attending a group advising session led by a faculty member in your major, and registering for classes, you will be able to ask questions about financial aid, payment plans, athletics, student clubs and organizations and many other services. Q Will I meet one-on-one with an advisor? A No. Generally there is one faculty advisor per major group for this registration. You will work on your own to craft a class schedule under his/her supervision and guidance. At the beginning of your first semester, you will be assigned a specific academic advisor who will work with you on future course schedules. Q When will I find out what major requirements I need to meet? A Most departments have websites that list their major requirements. A good way to prepare for transfer advising is to look at the departmental website to see what courses you may have taken and which ones you will still need. At Orientation the advisor will evaluate your transfer credits with respect to major requirements and tell you what is still required. Major requirements are also in the complete college catalog, which can only be viewed online at Departmental websites can be found at [Bring a handwritten list of courses you have most recently completed] Q What can I do if a course I took is not indicated as meeting a general education requirement at New altz, but I believe it might meet a requirement? A Bring a printed copy of the course description (from that college s catalog) with you. The course petition process will be described at Orientation. Q What if I come in as an undeclared major? A While Transfer Admission requires students with 45 credits or more to choose a major as part of the admission process, there is some flexibility. If you are transferring to New altz with 60 or more credits you are required to declare a major to be eligible for the New York State Tuition Assistance rogram. If you have 75 or more credits, you must declare a major to register for classes. The faculty member you meet with will only be knowledgeable about the requirements of your intended major, therefore, it is important that the major you report to Admissions is accurate. Academic Advising staff will be available at Orientation to advise undeclared students and to answer questions for those students who are choosing between majors, but the only way a student can declare a major is by meeting with a faculty advisor from an academic department. Q What if I want to change the major I indicated on my application? A It is important that you contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission at (845) and ask to speak to a transfer advisor if you change your mind prior to Orientation. Changes on the day of Orientation are only allowed with special permission of the Offices of Transfer Admission, and Academic Advising. Specific departmental requirements and enrollment limits apply. Q When is the Health Report and roof of Immunization Form (signed by the physician) due? A If you had a physical for another college in the past two years, you are responsible for contacting that school and having them forward the records to our Student Health Service. Otherwise, you must have your physician/ healthcare provider sign and send the paperwork directly from the doctor s office. The form can be found at The sooner the health report is completed and mailed, the more confident you can be that state and university regulations are met for you to be able to start classes on the first day of the semester, and for securing eligibility to use the Health Service on campus. The absolute deadline for having the report with MMR vaccine information, as well as the Meningitis Response Form you sign yourself, is the end of the month RIOR to your first month of classes. Q When will I receive Financial Aid award information? A Accepted transfer students who have paid a re-enrollment Deposit (ED) will be sent an aid award once their completed FAFSA is on file at New altz. Q When is final payment due for tuition and other fees? A Billing is only done online through your my.newpaltz.edu account. aper bills are not mailed. ayment must be received in the Office of Student Accounts by the stated due date that appears on your bill. You can access your bill, accept your charges, complete the health insurance waiver, and make payment or payment arrangements online at my.newpaltz.edu starting two days after you attend the program. Q Do I need a permit or arking Hang Tag to park on campus during the school year? A Yes. All students parking on campus need to purchase a hang tag. Applications can be found online at or in HAB 35. A driver s license and vehicle registration are required. Q What else do I need to know about Course Registration and Orientation? A ay your pre-enrollment deposit, register for a session, receive your confirmation , bring $20 and a photo I.D. to process and receive your college I.D. card. rogram refunds for students and guests can only be issued if we are contacted 72 hours prior to your session. 3
