2 A Message from the Chair Dr. William P. Bloss Greetings, it s a privilege to join the Department of Criminal Justice and become a member of the Pirate Nation. Since taking the chair s position on June 1, 2010, I ve seen firsthand the department s longstanding commitment to academic excellence and serving the educational needs of students across Eastern North Carolina and beyond. We are truly dedicated to exemplary teaching and research as these enable us to fulfill our mission to educate the next generation of criminal leaders with the aim of enhancing the administration of criminal justice and quality of life in communities. The department s outstanding faculty is making significant contributions through innovative research and knowledge sharing that not only inform criminal justice policy and practice but improve public safety and community well-being. Our ability to successfully carry out this mission is dependent upon the partnerships we have with students, alumni, practitioners, and friends who have supported us over the years. I m excited to be at ECU and a part of the department s bright future. There is much more that we want to share not only here but in the newsletters to come. We re committed to keeping our supporters informed of activities, achievements, and needs in the department. While we value our rich educational traditions and appreciate the benefits of criminal justice study at ECU, we also look ahead to the important undertakings and achievements to come as we prepare our criminal justice students for success. We invited you to join us on this exciting voyage! Highlights This has been a momentous year with many exciting events and accomplishments. Here are a few standouts but there is more news to follow! Innovative Courses and Programs New courses were launched this year that enabled students to study criminal justice in novel ways. For example, Dr. Mark Jones taught the first criminal justice course in the new ECU Honors College this spring. Entitled Crime and Criminal Justice: An Interdisciplinary Approach to a Global Challenge, the course explored critical criminal justice issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and drew upon the expertise of university faculty in criminal justice, medicine, psychology, anthropology, and geography, among others. In May 2011, Dr. Mark Jones also led a combined graduate and undergraduate study abroad course to England and France. Students not only compared the U.S., British, and French criminal justice systems ~ 4 ~

7 For those interested in making contributions or gifts, please contact the department or Ms. Kathy D. Brown with the ECU Office of University Development at (252) about joining the Friends of Criminal Justice. We are grateful for all those who make it possible, through their generosity, for deserving students to fulfill their dream of graduating from ECU with a degree in criminal justice. Two students from La Trobe University in Australia and one from the University of Manchester in the UK studied criminal justice at ECU during the 2010 fall semester. They are participants in the student foreign exchange partnership between ECU and several universities abroad. The department is actively promoting these exchanges since global engagement is an area of emphasis in our strategic plan and it helps our students be better prepared to work in a culturally diverse world Criminal Justice Career Fair On Friday February 25, 2011, the department hosted a Criminal Justice Career Fair in the Rivers Building on the ECU campus. Representatives from more than 20 federal, state, and local agencies provided students with information on criminal justice career options and employment opportunities. Among the organizations in attendance was the US Marshals Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Prisons, North Carolina Highway Patrol, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, North Carolina Department of Corrections, and county and municipal law enforcement, just to name a few. Several of the recruiters are ECU alumni and it was gratifying to have them return to campus as successful professionals. Alumni Beat Our spring alumni reception was great fun as it brought together faculty and alumni to share memories and catch up. See below for more information about the fall alumni gathering. ~ 7 ~
8 Congratulations to these Alums! Douglas J. Morgan, Jr. has been named the Special Agent in Charge of the Office of Investigations at the National Science Foundation. Michael W. Refreshments will be served and everyone will have a chance to visit with former classmates and professors, see friends, meet newcomers, and check out the many exciting changes in the department. The gathering is being held in conjunction with ECU Homecoming weekend festivities. A reminder and RSVP request will be sent out in the fall. Friends of Criminal Justice There are many ways that supporters of the Department of Criminal Justice can contribute to sustaining our educational mission.
