CRJU 3410, Probation and Parole This course is appropriate for students who have a specific interest in the role of probation and parole as correctional sanctions in community settings. Particular attention is paid to evaluations research evidence on the success of probation and parole, factors that contribute to the successful completions of probation and parole and the role that the community and citizens play in the community corrections process. Semester Hours: 3 Instructor: Marcy Becker is an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Colorado Denver, School of Public Affairs. She graduated in 1998 from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. During her undergraduate degree, she served as an exchange student in Monterrey, Mexico. Marcy received her Master of Criminal Justice at the

2 University of Colorado Denver in Currently, she works as a Probation Supervisor with the Judicial Probation Department in Boulder, Colorado. CRJU 4120, Race, Class and Crime Monday/Wednesday 2:00 3:15PM This course examines the relationships between race, social class and crime. Attention is given to theoretical explanations, empirical research and patterns of criminal behavior and focuses on historical frameworks that are relevant to current perspectives on the impact and interactions of race, class and crime in the field. Instructor: Eric Poole has his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Washington State University. Prior to joining SPA, he taught at Auburn University. Dr. Poole served as SPA's interim dean for the academic years. Currently, he teaches in the Criminal Justice Program and is a nationally-respected scholar in the fields of corrections, criminology, evaluation research, and juvenile justice. CRJU 4121, Ethics in Criminal Justice Monday/Wednesday 3:30 4:45PM This course is designed to begin preparing students in identifying and critically examining ethical issues in the criminal justice system by applying ethical decision models. This course also provides students with the unique opportunity to analyze how they would resolve these issues according to their own values and beliefs while staying within the boundaries of the law and professional codes ethics. CRJU , Prisoner Reentry Tuesdays/Thursdays 2:00 3:15PM This course focuses on the challenges and issues involved in prisoner reentry. The course will cover historical development of prisoner reentry policy and influencing factors in the creation of prisoner reentry policy. Empirical trends in incarceration and prisoner reentry success. Special issues related to prisoner reentry. Instructor: Mark Pogrebin has his M.A. from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. A nationally-recognized authority in the field of criminal justice, Dr. Pogrebin held faculty positions at Florida State University and the University of Iowa prior to joining SPA in His present interests lie in the areas of criminology and penology, sociology of law and organizations, administration of justice, deviant behavior, and qualitative research methods. CRJU 4600-E01, Computer Crime

3 This course will explore the contemporary and unique issues related to computer crime. We will look at the new types of crimes being committed using computers and the Internet. We will also learn some of the basics of computer forensics, including how computers store information, extracting and investigating computer artifacts, Media Access Control data, understanding malware and how to safely surf the Internet. This course will provide the student with a solid foundation to understand the new challenges computer crimes present and some of the forensic tools and processes available to investigate these crimes. Instructor: Greg Brown has been working in the corrections field for over 25 years as an alcohol/drug evaluation specialist, a probation officer supervising domestic violence offenders and as a specialized sex offender supervision officer. For the over seven years, he has been the Chief Probation Officer for the 20th Judicial District in Boulder Colorado. His department has over 3600 adults and 200 juveniles under supervision on any given day and a staff of approximately 65 professionals. Greg has his Bachelor s Degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado in Boulder and Master s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. Greg is also a Certified Computer Examiner through the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners. He is the lead probation instructor for the U.S. Department of Justice s SMART (Sex Offender- Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking) office and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Greg has also worked with the National Judicial College training judges. In addition to teaching at the collegiate level for the past 7 years, Greg trains probation/parole and law enforcement in field computer forensics and computer monitoring. Greg is a trainer and consultant with the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) and the American Probation and Parole Association. CRJU 4600-E02, Terrorism and Collective Violence This course delves into issues of group violence and its control. Topics include: theory and strategy of mass violence, terrorism, genocide, riots, revolutions, and contemporary forms of collective violence. Instructor: Kenneth Mentor has taught at the university level for over 20 years, including 15 years online. As an experienced online educator, with research interests related to online learning, he has played key roles in the planning and development of several web-based degree programs. Dr. Mentor earned his J.D. and Ph.D. in Social Science at Syracuse University. His master s degree in Psychology was awarded by Central Michigan University, which he also attended as an undergraduate.

4 CRJU 5574, White Collar Crime Tuesdays 6:30 9:15PM This course employs both the social science and legal approaches to examine crime committed by corporations as well as by individuals in white-collar occupations. The course covers how such crimes are socially defined, who commits them, who is victimized by them, which social contexts promote them, and how society and the criminal justice system respond to them. Instructor: Mary Dodge earned her Ph.D. in 1997 in criminology, law and society from the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine. She received her B.A. and M.A. in psychology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Her articles have appeared in Courts and Justice, Contemporary Issues in Criminology, International Journal of the Sociology of Law, The Prison Journal, Police Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, and the Encyclopedia of White-Collar and Corporate Crime. She and Gilbert Geis co-edited the book Lessons of Criminology and share authorship on the book Stealing Dreams: A Fertility Clinic Scandal. She also authored the book Women and White- Collar Crime. CRJU , Crime and Criminal Justice in Disasters Thursdays 5:00 7:45PM Disasters and other catastrophic events impose significant demands on the Criminal Justice system and other first responder agencies. The range of impacts following a natural, technological or human-caused disaster adversely affect both first responders and citizens alike and have the potential to significantly undermine public safety, leading to greater suffering. This course will help students better understand the many challenges and societal, organizational, and criminogenic factors that can negatively influence the postdisaster environment. This course will also discuss victim and environmental impacts, measures typically undertaken by law enforcement to restore law and order during or in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, and the role of other actors such as the National Guard. Through experiential learning activities that include exercises/simulations, guest lecturers, case studies, independent research, and other unique learning opportunities, Crime and Criminal Justice in Disasters will highlight the challenges of maintaining law and order in post-disaster environments where significant resource constraints may exist, examine how public disorder and lawlessness following a disaster can hinder response and recovery efforts, and identify how shifting priorities--from criminal enforcement to humanitarian assistance for example--can alter traditional roles and responsibilities of law enforcement. Instructor: Dana Reynolds Deputy Director, Colorado Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM). Mr. Reynolds is a 14-year veteran of the Colorado Department of Public Safety. He began his career as a State Trooper with the Colorado State Patrol. He held assignments as a policy and research specialist, accreditation manager, field supervisor, internal affairs investigator and polygraphist, Sergeant, Captain of the Homeland Security Section and Director of the Colorado Information Analysis Center (CIAC), the state fusion center. Mr. Reynolds then accepted a position as Director of the Office of Preparedness within DHSEM. He was most recently promoted to Deputy Director. In his current role, Mr. Reynolds has direct oversight over several programs, including geospatial analysis & imagery; infrastructure protection; cybersecurity; state preparedness;

5 interoperable communications; grant & finance; policy, strategic planning and rulemaking; and strategic communications. Mr. Reynolds holds a bachelor s degree in Public Administration and a master s degree in Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School s Program on Crisis Leadership, an executive education program. He also serves as adjunct faculty at Denver University (DU) in the Sociology and Criminology Program and is a Senior Lecturer at DU at the Korbel School in the Homeland Security Certificate Program. CRJU 6600-E01, Federal Criminal Justice System This course examines the workings of the criminal justice system in the federal government. Instructor: Daniel Burke is a 2003 graduate of the MCJ program and returned to UCD in 2010 after teaching in the Criminal Justice Department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dan has been a federal criminal investigator since 1997, serving as a special agent and supervisory special agent in the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of Homeland Security in Texas, Colorado and California. Dan teaches classes related to law enforcement, specializing in federal law enforcement. CRJU 6600-E02, Reefer Madness: Cannabis in the US This course examines the recent trend of states moving towards the legalization of marijuana. In addition, it attempts to elucidate what this trend means for the U.S., states, communities, and the criminal justice system.
