Choose Criminal Justice at UCM.
Choose Red to find the right balance. The University of Central Missouri s Department of Criminal Justice offers a holistic academic experience that balances classroom studies and hands-on opportunities. The faculty members are internationally recognized for their expertise and bring their knowledge directly to you every day. The program s comprehensive curriculum features courses in areas such as policing, courts, corrections, juvenile justice, criminal investigation, criminal justice management, victimology, international justice and terrorism. Your Success Student success and involvement in co-curricular activities are top priorities in the criminal justice program, as recognized by the nationally awardwinning students and alumni of all ranks and professions. That s why the department hosts the annual Western District Court of Appeals for you to personally experience the appellate court process without ever leaving campus. Outside Perspective The department is home to the Institute of Justice and International Studies, which supports collaboration between students and faculty members from around the world. It also hosts an annual two-week study tour of a foreign country s criminal justice system, and an annual conference that brings international experts to UCM to present on a variety of current topics. Career Preparation Students are strongly encouraged to complete an internship, as the department has connections with hundreds of agencies and businesses throughout the United States and abroad. In addition, the department collaborates with UCM s Office of Career Services to provide an annual criminal justice career fair, which brings dozens of future employers to campus to interview students for internship, part-time and full-time positions.
Student Involvement Being involved in student organizations related to your major will help you apply your studies to real-world situations, meet other students, attend conferences and network with professionals in your field of study. Alpha Phi Sigma Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Criminal Justice Honor Society. Its members strive to make a positive difference in society by volunteering on campus and in the community. APS provides tutoring for criminal justice students, undergoes research projects with faculty members, and is instrumental in sponsoring campus wide guest speakers. To be admitted, you must have a 3.2 undergraduate GPA and 12 credit hours in criminal justice coursework. Lambda Alpha Epsilon Lambda Alpha Epsilon is UCM s professional criminal justice fraternity. It has distinguished itself in both regional and national competitions with other LAE organizations by sweeping top honors for nearly a decade. By joining LAE, you can expect: Numerous professional contacts Guidance from experienced faculty and students The opportunity to represent an esteemed criminal justice program First hand experience through conferences and competitions Travel to conferences, training and tours Pre-Law Students Association The Pre-Law Students Association supports the mock trial team that gives students real legal experience in preparation for a law career. It is open to anyone and provides: Law school campus visits Preparation for the national law school entrance exam Mock trial experience Student American Correctional Association UCM s Student American Correctional Association was the first student chapter of its kind. It is open to all majors and offers: Professional networking Professional conferences Prison tours
I Choose Red because the faculty are willing to ensure the success of their students, whether by staying after class to answer questions or discussing career plans for the future. Mondell Hampton, criminal justice major Special Housing Interest Program University Housing provides a living environment that can enhance your learning experience at UCM. Special Housing Interest Programs are great for meeting students with similar interests, adjusting to college life and getting involved on campus. The criminal justice SHIP, housed in the University Conference Center, provides a computer lab, student lounge, student organization offices and a faculty adviser office. Benefits of the criminal justice SHIP: Live with other criminal justice majors on the same floor Make lifelong friendships Get better grades Adjust to college life easier Attend activities based on your interests Get involved on campus
Choose Red for a career you will feel passionately about. The criminal justice profession requires a lot of heart, which is why so many men and women who enter the field feel passionately about their chosen profession. There are numerous employment paths in the criminal justice profession, but many require college and advanced degrees to work in local, state and federal law enforcement. Opportunities exist with federal agencies; private industries; educational institutions; city, county and state agencies; the U.S. armed forces; and correctional and rehabilitation agencies. The Department of Criminal Justice boasts an employment rate of more than 90 percent for graduates within six months after graduation. UCM s Office of Career Services will assist you with writing your résumé and cover letter, as well as bringing potential employers to campus for career fairs and interviews. As a UCM criminal justice graduate, you ll become part of an international network of alumni, including judges, attorneys, professors, chiefs and police administrators, and virtually every federal law enforcement and corrections agency. Career possibilities include: Arson investigator Border patrol agent Conservation and wildlife officer Corrections officer Detective Juvenile justice officer Lawyer Probation and parole officer Special agent Or graduate school It s exciting to know we re going to be able to do something about a case where the offender thinks they ve gotten away with it after all these years, and I get to say, Nope, we got ya.
