1 The following Spring 2016 courses are available and run January 19 th May 14 th. *Please note, MCJ courses are CRJU 4140, Domestic Violence and Crime This course examines the criminal justice systems response to intimate partner violence by focusing on the interactions between victims, offenders and the individual components of the criminal justice system. By exploring the dynamics of intimate partner violence this course addresses the theory, history, research, legislation and policy implications related to the criminal justice system's response to violence against women. Instructor: Angela Gover is a Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver. She is also the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Criminal Justice. Dr. Gover received her Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Maryland. Her research primarily focuses on victimization, violence against women and children, and gender and crime. Some of her published work has appeared in the journals Violence and Victims, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, and

2 Violence Against Women. Dr. Gover has been the recipient of numerous college and university-wide awards, including the 2012 UCD Research and Creative Activities Symposium Student Mentor Award, 2012 School of Public Affairs Excellence in Research Award, 2012 School of Public Affairs Excellence in Service Award, 2010 UCD Excellence in Teaching Award, 2010 School of Public Affairs Excellence in Teaching Award, 2008 UCD Excellence in Research and Creative Activities Award, and the 2008 School of Public Affairs Excellence in Research Award. Dr. Gover remains active in her profession by serving on editorial boards for Justice Quarterly, Women and Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, the American Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Law & Society, and Criminal Justice Studies. CRJU 4600-E01 Death Penalty This course examines in-depth a comprehensive range of issues surrounding capital punishment. Specifically, it looks at the history of capital punishment, methods of execution, legal issues and case law, deterrence, miscarriages of justice, discrimination in the capital charging and sentencing system, and the role of the death penalty internationally. The coverage of these issues relies on many sources, including scholarly readings, non-fiction books, court cases, websites, videos and documentaries, speeches, and media. Instructor: Sheila Huss is a senior instructor of Criminology and Criminal Justice in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver. Sheila received her Ph.D. in Public Affairs from the University of Colorado Denver. She has taught numerous courses, including Environmental Crime and Justice; Criminological Theory; Research Methods; Introduction to Criminal Justice; and Race, Social Structure, and Crime. Her research primarily focuses on environmental justice and theory. In 2010, Sheila received the International Technical Rescue Symposium Best Conference Paper Award, and in 2014, her dissertation received honorable mention for best dissertation in the School of Public Affairs at UC Denver. CRJU Administration of Justice Tuesday/Thursday, 2:00 3:15 PM This course gives students rich insights into what it is like to work within the system (as practitioners) as well as from those who experience criminal justice as outsiders (as citizens, clients, jurors, probationers, or inmates). By providing qualitative and teachable articles from the perspective of those who experience the three components of the criminal justice system students will be better informed about the realities of the day-to-day job of criminal justice professionals. A second, but equal important, part of the readings asks the students look beyond the actual content of the articles and use a "critical thinking" perspective to

3 develop their own thoughts about the functions of the criminal justice system on a broader societal level. Instructor: Mark Pogrebin has his M.A. from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. A nationally-recognized authority in the field of criminal justice, Dr. Pogrebin held faculty positions at Florida State University and the University of Iowa prior to joining SPA in His present interests lie in the areas of criminology and penology, sociology of law and organizations, administration of justice, deviant behavior, and qualitative research methods. CRJU Poverty and Crime Monday/Wednesday, 3:30 4:45 PM This course involves an economic analysis of crime and the criminal justice system. Topics include empirical and theoretical analysis of the economic causes of criminal behavior, the social costs of crime and its prevention and the design of crime enforcement policies. Instructor: Eric Poole has his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Washington State University. Prior to joining SPA, he taught at Auburn University. Dr. Poole served as SPA's interim dean for the academic years. Currently, he teaches in the Criminal Justice Program and is a nationally-respected scholar in the fields of corrections, criminology, evaluation research, and juvenile justice. CRJU 5450, Law of All Hazards Management *Weekend Intensive February 26-27, 2016 March 18-19, 2016 April 15-16, 2016 April 20, 2016 Fridays: 5:00 9:00 PM; Saturdays: 9:00 AM 5:00 PM This course conveys knowledge of the statutes, regulations and court decisions governing the management of hazards by governmental agencies. It covers local, state and federal agencies as they mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from naturally, accidentally and intentionally caused disasters. Instructor: Lloyd Burton Professor Burton holds undergraduate degrees in Government (Prescott College) and Conservation of Natural Resources (UC-Berkeley); an M.A. in Cultural Geography with a Regional Planning emphasis (San Francisco State University); and the Ph.D. in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from the School of Law (Boalt Hall), University of California, Berkeley. He co-directs the M.P.A. program concentration in Environmental Policy, Management, and Law; and also teaches in the M.P.A. program concentration in

4 Emergency Management and Homeland Security. He is the founder and managing co-host of The Jurisprudence of Disasters, a collaborative research network established under the auspices of the Law and Society Association. Much of his current research centers on the interface between environmental management and disaster management, in contexts such as wildfires in the Wildlands/Urban Interface in states of the Mountain West, and hazardous infrastructure in urban settings. CRJU Murder 101 Monday, 6:30 9:15 PM Murder. The ultimate crime. In this class, we will examine homicide from all angles: the murderer, the victims, the police, prosecution and defense. Explore sensational cases, dogged detective work and the latest science as we dig deep into the psyche of a killer and how the case unfolds before the jury. Instructor: Daniel Burke is a 2003 graduate of the MCJ program and returned to UCD in 2010 after teaching in the Criminal Justice Department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dan has been a federal criminal investigator since 1997, serving as a special agent and supervisory special agent in the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of Homeland Security in Texas, Colorado and California. Dan teaches classes related to law enforcement, specializing in federal law enforcement. CRJU , Crime and Criminal Justice in Disasters Tuesday 5:00 7:45 PM This course will explore the workings of the criminal courts by examining the roles of the participants, trial procedures and common legal issues that arise at trial. Students will participate in conducting portions of mock trials in order to gain a deeper understanding of some of the realities of trial and the strategic decisions made by attorneys in our criminal courts. Instructor: Dana Reynolds is a 15-year veteran of the Colorado Department of Public Safety. He began his career as a State Trooper with the Colorado State Patrol. He held assignments as a policy and research specialist, accreditation manager, field supervisor, internal affairs investigator and polygraphist. He was ultimately promoted to the rank of Captain where he led the Homeland Security Section and served as Director of the Colorado Information Analysis Center (CIAC), the state fusion center. Mr. Reynolds then accepted a position as Director of the Office of Preparedness in the newly formed Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM). He was later appointed Deputy Director with oversight over critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, state preparedness, interoperable communications, grant and finance, and strategic communications. Most recently, Mr. Reynolds was appointed as Director of Emergency Management an leads the state s emergency management agency within DHSEM.

5 Mr. Reynolds holds a Bachelor s degree in Public Administration and a Master s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Colorado at Denver. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School s Program on Crisis Leadership, an executive education program, along with the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) from the Center for Homeland Defense & Security, Naval Postgraduate School, in Monterey, CA. Mr. Reynolds also serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Homeland Security Certificate Program at Denver University, and holds an adjunct faculty position in the Sociology and Criminology Department, also at Denver University. CRJU 6600-E01, Serial Killers This is a special topics course. It is designed to provide students with an in-depth examination of the serial killers among us. It focuses on the myths and stereotypes that have evolved from mass media and public efforts to find explanations for the relatively rare phenomenon of serial murder. Case studies are used to introduce several serial killers that have plagued the streets of America and abroad. Instructor: Wesley Jennings is an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Colorado Denver. He has a Ph.D. in criminology and over 10 years of experience in teaching a variety of criminology and criminal justice courses.
