In the course, trainees learn to take on leadership tasks in day-to-day power plant operations. Using case studies employing a variety of realistic situations, trainees assume the role of a power plant shift supervisor and his technical management skills. The final Chamber of Commerce examination certifies the trainees career readiness in accordance with current requirements for power plant operations. Enhance technical proficiency Build social skills The diversity of tasks facing a power plant shift supervisor is reflected in the KWS s special training: Learning how to run a power plant efficiently is as important in our training as learning about the applicable legal framework, environmental protection regulations and safety guidelines. Power plant shift supervisor courses are conducted fulltime. For participants from conventional power plants, two alternative paths are available: Production or Production: Electrotechnology and Control Engineering (P E&C). Our training concept is based on the practical experience of our member companies in the day-to-day operation of power plants. This ensures that the KWS training is both practice-oriented while adhering to the highest technical and scientific standards.

08 POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR Training Methods Training Methods Active learning Teaching skills Instruction in the KWS power plant shift supervisor course is carried out by trainers with years of experience in the field of power plant training. By teaching their courses, lecturers from our partner companies share their technical knowledge and practical experience. To make sure our training staff keep their own skills up to date and relevant, they undergo regular training of their own. Building competence Promoting individuals Every employee taking part will be trained according to his or her specific level of knowledge and performance. Standardized progress assessments and ongoing review and documentation of proficiency levels help detect deficits early on and provide individual trainees with assistance as required. With this personal approach, the KWS guarantees that every trainee is individually and optimally prepared for the final examination. This includes specialized, small-group tutorials and one-on-one lessons to assist in specific topics. In addition, we enhance our course offerings with measures aimed at developing individual skills that are essential for the management role of our future power plant shift supervisors. On top of the usual training, trainees have the opportunity to improve their presentation techniques, verbal and communication skills and, if necessary, take part in stress management and exams training. All relevant safety guidelines and environmental protection regulations that affect management decision-making are taught in detail as part of the training. From this, paths of study are derived with particular attention given the paramount objective of efficient power plant operations. Studying theory Acquiring practical skills Real-life usability is at the heart of conveying knowledge: Trainees need to be as well prepared as possible for the decisionmaking situations they will encounter as a power plant shift supervisor. The training concept is therefore tailored to the specific demands placed upon people in decision-making positions in power plants. With the help of case studies, trainees learn how to make decisions and how to assess specific situations in everyday power plant operations. This includes both technical and organizational aspects as well as HR management and staff availability. In our laboratories, trainees work with the actual software and hardware used in modern power plants. The use of power plant simulators in the classroom permits immediate hands-on experience and makes understanding complex technical processes much easier.

POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 09 Qualifications and Skills On the way to become competent power plant shift supervisors, participants are instructed using a three-stage training concept: Training objectives are divided into three stages to best meet client requirements. These stages facilitate combining the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and its application in practice. Acquiring knowledge, understanding what has been learned and the practical application of this information comprise the three learning stages. This approach helps complex processes become second nature to participants. They learn to act autonomously and apply their newly acquired knowledge in practice.

10 POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR INTERDISCIPLINARY SKILLS Part A: Basic interdisciplinary qualifications The daily work of a power plant shift supervisor is defined by legal provisions and specific safety regulations. The Laws and Regulations Compliance segment teaches future power plant shift supervisors how to consistently devise their crews` workplace conditions in accordance with occupational safety and environmental protection requirements. Understanding the interplay of economic forces is the basis of efficient power plant management, and a skill taught and honed by the KWS as part of its Business Management program. On completion of the program, future power plant shift supervisors will be able to plan, coordinate, conduct and monitor business processes. The power plant shift supervisor course also includes training in project management and the specific tools available for conducting projects. This segment of the course focuses on data gathering, communication and planning tools. The KWS gives trainees an indepth understanding of planning processes and reveals software-based approaches to problem solving. The course includes training designed to augment your employees social skills. Teamwork helps participants develop an intuitive understanding of interpersonal processes. They acquire leadership techniques that are aimed at problem solving even in a conflict scenario. A future power plant shift supervisor needs the ability to take charge of a team and encourage individual strengths with a suitable style of leadership.

POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR SPECIALIZATION 11 Part B: Specific Basic qualifications Building on the interdisciplinary content previously acquired, part B focuses on teaching basic qualifications for specializations. For those training to become power plant shift supervisors in the Production specialization as well as those in the Production E&C, this part of the training consists of three subjects. The professional use of the own mother tongue (German) addresses one of the essential skills of future power plant shift supervisors in both specializations. For this reason, techniques are developed for improving language fluency, the ability to understand texts and describe their content. This includes technical descriptions as well as staff assessments. Thermodynamics plays a central role in physics education. This part of the course includes an explanation of how thermodynamic processes interact. This basic knowledge is essential for understanding power plant processes during normal operations as well as disturbances. In addition to written communication and thermodynamics, which are taught in a modified form for the two specilizations, the content of the third subject covered in this part of the training varies depending on the specialization (see Course Contents, page 7). Materials Technology completes the second part of the Power Plant Shift Supervisor: Production course, covering the various materials, their properties and potential applications in the operation of fossil fuel power plants. The ability to test specific materials rounds out the technical expertise of the specialization: Production. An overview of production electroindustry regulations is a component of the Power Plant Shift Supervisor: P E&C specialization. The trainee learns to apply his newly-acquired insight to finding solutions autonomously with regard to the given regulatory framework.

12 POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR OPERATIONAL Part C: Operational Qualifications Shared foundation Specialization options With its power plant shift supervisor training, the KWS offers experienced power plant employees two options for the obtaining professional qualifications. Specialization in the Production or the Production E&C paths takes into account the participants varying skills and their individual training backgrounds. Those taking part in Production specialization are trained to manage process engineering facilities. They are proficient in electrotechnology and are thus able to lead electrics specialists in power plants. Those participating in the Production E&C specialization are typically already trained in one of the electrical professions. On completion of the course, they will have gained comprehensive expert knowledge in the electrical engineering and control engineering fields and know how to manage the electrotechnical systems of a power plant independently and assess and maintain their operability. The final part of the three-phase training course focuses on expert knowledge and on practical instruction in the respective specialization. The Power Plant Systems and Electrical Engineering and Control Engineering course components are rated differently depending on the focus of the training. In terms of content, the last subject covered, Organization and HR Management, takes an interdisciplinary approach.

POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR OPERATIONAL 13 Understanding power plant systems Safe power plant operations In the Power Plant Systems segment, the KWS teaches the essentials of key power plant components and auxiliary and ancillary equipment as well as the processes involved in steam generation. Lessons are practiceoriented and key processes are reproduced on the simulators, reinforcing the learning experience and the application of the expertise thus acquired. For a power plant shift supervisor, comprehensive insight into steam generation with fossil fuels as well as power plant chemistry and related water treatment are fundamental in guaranteeing smooth system operations. In order to be able to run gas and steam turbines, trainees get acquainted with turbine design and functions. This component of the course prepares future power plant shift supervisors for situations when decisions are required. It gives them skills and the knowledge needed to handle any situation safely, even in an emergency, within the relevant regulatory framework. During this interdisciplinary segment of the course, the training concept includes lessons covering the design and functions of pipelines, construction and operations of fossil fuel power plants, and environmental protection. Key instruction items in this field include relevant laws and regulations, establishing and maintaining safe operating conditions as well as measures and possible courses of action during malfunctions. For the Production E&C specialization, the Power Plant Systems segment encompasses 166 training hours. For the Production specialization, this subject is dealt with more extensively, during 342 training hours.

14 POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR OPERATIONAL Understanding technology Preventing hazards Trainees in the Production E&C specialization are more thoroughly trained in electrotechnology and control engineering, with 440 more classroom hours than trainees in the Production specialization. They are also taught the terminology, construction and operations of electrotechnical equipment and its importance in power plants and their processes. On completion of the technical part of the training, the trainees are able to function both as a reference point and guide for the technical specialists. Because the future power plant shift supervisors need to be prepared for malfunctions and improper handling of equipment and the hazards involved, dealing with these matters is taught extensively. Training in all relevant safety regulations and protective meas- ures derived from the body of regulations covering all legal and technical aspects is an elementary part of technical training. Monitoring compliance with these regulations will be one of the tasks of future power plant shift supervisors. Within their instrumentation and control training, trainees will acquire knowledge in field automation, process control systems and control functions, in particular. In order to ensure environmentally sound and efficient operation in their future assignments, power plant shift supervisors must be able to assess the functionality of control systems and equipment. Troubleshooting and malfunction management are also simulated and trained. This includes evaluating control system readings and organizing maintenance measures. Acting responsibly Leading successfully Participants in both specializations receive the same level of training in the Organization and HR Management component of the course. This component is divided into three parts: Business management and economics, HR Management and occupational safety. In addition to cost-specific factors, trainees learn to calculate and apply methods of time management. As managers, the future power plant shift supervisors will need to be able to structure their areas of responsibility. For this reason, both business management processes and the importance of structural organization and workflow management are taught, and trainees learn how to work with strategic management methods within a quality control context. Such leadership skills as employee communication, motivation techniques and goal-oriented leadership are key course components, training the future power plant shift supervisors to be responsible leaders. This also includes elements of personal development as well as self-contemplation techniques designed to improve the trainee s management abilities. Considerable importance is also attached to the subject of occupational safety: Here, trainees are instructed in all relevant laws and guidelines that they will have to enforce as power plant shift supervisor in charge. Furthermore, trainees are taught to think and act in light of hazard prevention at all times. That way, power plant shift supervisors with foresight may successfully manage their areas of responsibility while encouraging their colleagues to act accordingly.

POWER PLANT SHIFT SUPERVISOR Examination and Graduation 15 Examination and Graduation Participants complete their one year course for Power Plant Shift Supervisor: Production or Production E&C with a state-approved final examination by the Chamber of Commerce. Upon successful completion of the examination, graduates receive a certified professional degree that verifies their expert status. In Germany, the government assigns regional Chambers of Industry and Commerce with conducting and certifying official examinations in the field of vocational and occupational training.
