3 Introduction This guide provides an overview of Glow Web Hosting and its potential use in learning and teaching. There are instructions on setting up Glow Web Hosting and exploring its functionality. Glow is web-based and can be used wherever users have access to an internet connection. Each Glow user has their own unique username and password which gives access to information and resources appropriate to the user s role; thus, a pupil s access to Glow will differ from staff users. What is the Glow Web Hosting service? The Glow Web Hosting service allows a Glow user to own, add content to and publish a web site. A web site is a group of related web pages published on the world wide web or within an intranet such as Glow. The various pages of a web site are interconnected using hyperlinks which, when clicked, will navigate the user to another area of the web site. Most web sites have a home page as their starting point. To complete any of the tasks in this guide the user must be logged on to Glow as a user with the permission to use Glow Web Hosting. This permission is set by the Glow Accounts and Services Manager (ASM) for your school or your authority if you have any queries regarding the permissions that have been set for you, please check with your ASM. Why use the Glow Web Hosting service? Schools that do not already have a web presence could take advantage of the Glow service in order to publish their school web site for the world to see. Users can make various types of content visible to a much larger audience. For example, work could be shared across schools within Glow without the need to invite Glow users into a group, good practice could be highlighted to the wider internet community, school events could be publicised to the local community. Author: Glow Team Page 3 of 28 Ref: GC278_v1.1
4 The service could also provide Glow users with an additional area for distributing files if their portal space allocations have been used up. For example, a Glow user could create a basic web site for the purpose of storing files for upload and download. The flexibility of publishing web pages could allow for more creativity in the presentation of information. Pupils who have the knowledge to create web pages could be allowed to present their work in this format rather than using more traditional methods. Author: Glow Team Page 4 of 28 Ref: GC278_v1.1

All requests for web site approval or amendments to web sites, such as extending the expiry date, have to be approved. The approval of requests is carried out by the Accounts and Services Manager. Typically, this task will be carried out by the local authority ASM. In this tutorial you will: Use the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part to request approval to set up a web site Requesting a web site 1. Log on to Glow. 2. The Accounts and Services Manager responsible for approving web site requests can change the value of storage allocated to a web site during the approval process. Web Site Expires: This box is ticked by default. For a web site request with no expiry date you would remove the tick. Please note: the Accounts and Services Manager responsible for approving web site requests can change the expiry date for a web site during the approval process. Expiry Date: If the default tick is left in the Web Site Expires box, you will need to enter an expiry date for the web site. You can either enter a date manually in the format DD/MM/YYYY or use the calendar icon to select a date. Web Site Access: This drop-down menu allows you to choose between letting only selected Glow users see your website (Internal intranet) or publishing your web site for all web users to see (Public Internet). 14 Tutorial 3 Managing the content of an approved web site A Glow hosted web site is suitable for publishing: Pages written in HTML HTML pages using technologies such as Flash and Shockwave HTML pages containing Javascript A Glow hosted web site is not suitable for, or may not support: Active Server Pages (ASP) Pages published with Microsoft FrontPage Extensions CGI scripts Glow Web Hosting does not provide tools for creating HTML pages. For the purpose of this tutorial, you could create your own HTML pages using proprietary software (e.g. Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Dreamweaver) or HTML code (generated by Notepad or another HTML editor). This guide makes use of sample HTML files created for use in Glow training. Please check with your trainer for the location of these files. Glow supports the upload of content to the web hosting server using secure file transfer protocol (ftp) via a suitable third party software client. Glow also supports the use of WebDAV: a method of creating, editing and managing files on a remote server that allows dragging and dropping of files from your computer to the server computer that will host the web site. Windows XP provides built-in support for WebDAV. WebDAV and ftp clients allow you to upload multiple files and folders in a simple operation. In the event that both ftp and WebDAV are blocked in your school, Glow provides a tool for managing and uploading your files. The Glow upload tool uploads a single file at a time. Please note: modern web design software packages often provide the additional functionality of publishing the web pages created by the software to a web server using WebDAV or ftp thereby bypassing the need for third party ftp clients. Please refer to the relevant software documentation for further instruction. Author: Glow Team Page 14 of 28 Ref: GC278_v1.1
15 In this tutorial you will learn how to: Use WebDAV to upload web pages to your approved web site Use a secure ftp client to upload web pages to your approved web site Use the Glow Manage Content tool to upload web pages to your approved web site Uploading content using WebDAV 1. 19 Note: To let others see your web site you will have to pass on the web site URL. This could be done by copying the URL and ing it or setting up a Glow group for the authorised users and adding the URL as a Web Link. Uploading content using Secure File Transfer Protocol Content for web hosting can be transferred to the server using a secure ftp application. These are not provided within Glow and must be installed and set up before the uploading of content can take place. Some suitable FTP clients are: FileZilla - Open Source CoreFTP Lite CuteFTP The screenshots used in this guide are from FileZilla version and Core FTP Lite version 1.3. Different ftp clients may have a different look and feel but they all tend to operate using similar principles. 1. Launch the ftp client. 2. FileZilla and Core FTP Lite both have a site manager function to set-up and manage the ftp settings required for the file transfer. From the site manager, create a new site. 3. Give the new site a suitable name. 4. The site needs to be configured to allow the transfer of files to take place. Glow supports the transfer of files using the TLS protocol which in simple terms is a secure method of communication between computers over a network. The configuration settings required are (see screenshots that follow): Host address/url: ftp1.glowscotland.org.uk Username/password: Glow username and password Port: 21 Servertype or protocol option: TLS or FTP over TLS Author: Glow Team Page 19 of 28 Ref: GC278_v1.1

In the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow. 3. In the Web Hosting Web Site Management web part select Manage content next to your approved web site details. 4. A new browser window will open.
