2 Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda und seine Bibliothek Wolfgang Maassen Bei der MONACOPHIL 2013 hatte der Verfasser Gelegenheit, Federico Borromeo im Kreise der aus der ganzen Welt angereisten Bibliophilen näher kennenzulernen. Dies war eindrucksvoll, gerade wegen einer derart ungewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit, die man wahrlich nicht alle Tage trifft. Bescheiden, höflich zurückhaltend, stets helfend und unterstützend, sich nie in den Vordergrund drängend. Dabei ist er einer der wirklich großen Philatelisten unserer Zeit. Nicht nur als Sammler zahlreicher Gebiete, als Aussteller, sondern auch als Literatur-Liebhaber und Bibliophiler. Was sich so einfach, fast simpel anhört, entfaltet seine wirkliche Eindruckskraft, wenn man einmal mehr über diesen sympathischen Philatelisten liest und hört. In Monaco teilte er im kleinen Kreis, in dem wir gemeinsam bei einem äußerst unterhaltsamen Abend zusammensaßen, seine Bereitschaft mit, die Bibliografie seiner Privatbibliothek mit anderen zu teilen. Ich nahm dieses Angebot gerne dankend an und bat ihn um Freigabe einer Veröffentlichung dieser Bestandsliste in PHILA HISTORICA. Sie wurde mir gerne gewährt, so dass wir alle heute einen näheren Blick in die Bibliothek eines Sammlers werfen können, der seit rund 40 Jahren begeistert philatelistische Literatur sammelt. Zu seinem Leben und zu seiner Biografie kann uns Band XXI der Edition d Or-Reihe mehr erzählen, in dem seine French mail in the West Indies näher vorgestellt wurde. Der Verfas- ser dankt dem Haus Köhler/Corinphila für die freundliche Genehmigung, diese Biografie in Wort und Bild hier darstellen zu dürfen. ***************** Federico Borromeo d'adda wird im Juli 1939 in Rom geboren. Er ist verheiratet und hat zwei Söhne sowie zwei Enkel. Nach der Grundschule in Italien besucht er nach der Mittel- und Oberschule ein renommiertes Internat in der Schweiz. Zu Hause sammelte niemand Briefmarken. Schaut man aber zurück, so findet sich in seiner Familie ein wirklich großer Sammler: Prinz Alfonso Doria Pamphili. Er stirbt 1913 und hinterlässt seine großartige Sammlung der Royal Philatelic Society in London. Prinz Alfonso Doria Pamphili ist der Vater von Federico's Großmutter. Sie ist es wohl, die Federico den ersten Umschlag voller Briefmarken aus dem nahe gelegenen Tabakladen schenkt. Anfangs ist Federico von den exotischen Briefmarken mit dem Bildnis wilder Tiere, Menschen in tropischer Umgebung und den Landschaften ferner Länder fasziniert. Bald wird er von einem professionellen Philatelisten beraten und beginnt eine richtige Sammlung der Briefmarken Italiens mit einer besonderen Vorliebe für Qualität und Schönheit. wm 1 PhH Special

3 Neben der Philatelie pflegt er ein weiteres Hobby: Die Fotografie. Er träumt von weiten Reisen und von Fotoaufnahmen in den Ländern, die er von seinen Briefmarken kennt. Sehr früh entscheidet sich Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda für den Beruf des Fotografen. Er geht auf ausgedehnte Reisen und unternimmt,fotografische Expeditionen. In Italien, Griechenland und Ägypten fotografiert er vor allem Landschaften, Architektur und Museumsgegenstände. Dann folgt eine ethnographische Unternehmung in Oberägypten und dem Sudan. Später bereist Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda den Fernen Osten von Afghanistan bis Korea. Das Ergebnis sind zahlreiche Bücher und ein großes Archiv mit mehr als Bildern in Farbe und schwarz/ weiß. Diese Fotos werden heute von spezialisierten Agenturen in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten vermarktet. Wie so häufig folgt eine Zeit, in der die Briefmarken zurück gestellt werden. Die Reisetätigkeit wird eingeschränkt, die Familie erfordert größere Aufmerksamkeit, ebenso die Immobilien, die Finanzen und die aktive Tätigkeit in einem Handelsunternehmen für Gewebe und Seide. Nachdem alles geregelt ist und ruhigere Zeiten beginnen, erwacht die Liebe für die Briefmarken erneut. Die Italien-Sammlung, bestehend aus ungebrauchten und gestempelten Briefmarken sowie Altitalien wird verkauft. Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda behält nur den Kirchenstaat. Das ist der Beginn seiner ernsthaften Beschäftigung mit der Philatelie und Postgeschichte. Die Krönung ist eine große Goldmedaille für die Sammlung Tariffe postali dello Stato Pontificio (Postgebühren im Kirchenstaat) bei einer Ausstellung im Jahr Die innovative Kollektion zeigt und erklärt die verschiedenen möglichen Tarife der komplexen und archaischen Postgebührenordnung. Innovativ ist auch die Aufmachung der Sammlung, denn die Beschriftung kann erstmals auf einem Computer gespeichert und direkt mit dem Drucker auf die Albumseiten gedruckt werden. Als der Sammlung praktisch nichts mehr Neues hinzugefügt werden kann, entschließt sich Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda zum Verkauf. Doch was soll er jetzt sammeln? wm 2 PhH Special

Die Herausforderung besteht für Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda in der Suche nach einem komplexen Sammelgebiet, um philatelistisch gesprochen bei Null mit einer neuen Kollektion zu beginnen. Die Wahl fällt auf die vielfältige Welt der Westindischen Inseln. Hier gibt es große und kleine Inseln unter der Herrschaft verschiedener Mächte, einige als Kolonien, andere als unabhängige Staaten. Kolonialmächte waren Frankreich, England, Dänemark, Holland, Spanien und sogar Schweden. Unabhängige Länder waren nur Haiti und die Dominikanische Republik. Für Postgeschichtler ein,fass ohne Boden! Bei der Internationalen Briefmarkenausstellung ITALIA '98 mit Herrn Gabbini. At ITALIA ' 98 International Stamp Exhibition with Mr. Gabbini. Das Thema erfordert hohe Ansprüche an ein Studium der Materie und einen strukturierten Plan, um alle Postdienstleistungen der Karibischen Inseln zu verstehen. Die Karibischen Inseln waren die ersten Gebiete der Neuen Welt, die von den Europäern entdeckt und besiedelt wurden. Post war die einzige Möglichkeit der Kommunikation mit den Heimatländern und der übrigen Welt. So unterlag die Post von Beginn an der besonderen Aufmerksamkeit der verschiedenen Mächte. Diese Thematik möchte Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda so übersichtlich wie möglich darstellen, vom frühesten bekannten Brief mit postalischen Vermerken aus Nevis 1662 bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. 5 primäre Ziel ist es, einen kurzen, aber dennoch umfassenden Überblick über die vielfältige Welt der Karibik zu geben. Dieses Ziel ist immer präsent bei der Auswahl der relevanten Belege und Dokumente zur Darstellung der Postorganisation, Größte Aufmerksamkeit wird den vielfältigen Post-Traditionen geschenkt. Traditionen, welche die verschiedenen Verwaltungen von Insel zu Insel unterschieden. Während die Inselgruppe geografisch einheitlich charakterisiert ist, wird sie im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in unterschiedliche und oftmals feindlich gesinnte politische Einheiten aufgeteilt. All das spiegelt sich in der Welt der Philatelie, in den unterschiedlichen Briefmarken und den verschiedenen Gebührensystemen eines jeden Landes. Die ersten Erwerbungen für die neue Sammlung werden 1985 getätigt. Bereits wenige Jahre später, als Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda noch in der Schweiz lebt, erhält seine Sammlung West Indies, Postal History bei der Sierrephila Mai 1990 eine Groß-Vermeil Medaille folgt eine Goldmedaille mit Ehrenpreis bei der Regiophil in Neuenburg. Aufgrund bürokratischer Probleme, insbesondere mit dem Zoll, wird die Sammlung nach Italien überführt. Von hier aus ist es wesentlich einfacher, die Kollektion zu Ausstellungen innerhalb Europas oder in andere Länder zu überführen. In Istanbul 1996 wird die Sammlung mit Gold bewertet, in Moskau 1997 mit Groß-Gold, ebenso in Rom 1998 und in Paris In London 2000 ist die Sammlung in der FIP Championship Class zu bewundern. Schließlich wird Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda, inzwischen Mitglied im Club de Monte-Carlo, eingeladen, seine Sammlung,West Indies im Ehrenhof in Singapur 2004 auszustellen. Mit der Zeit entwickeln sich aus der Hauptsammlung zwei spezialisierte Sammlungen: Die postgeschichtliche Sammlung Französische Post der Westindischen Inseln und die traditionelle Kollektion Nevis, Beide Sammlungen werden in der Folge international ausgestellt, darunter in Israel, Rom, Ravenna, Bangkok und Washington. Zusätzlich hat Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda weitere Sammlungen geformt. Darunter das Erste Königreich Italien von , eine Zeit unter starkem französisch-napoleonischen Einfluss. Auch eine Kollektion Postgeschichte des Alto Adige / Südtirol im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert sowie eine Sammlung von Briefen mit rückseitigen Papier-Siegeln kommt hinzu. Ergänzend baut er eine große Bibliothek mit etwa Büchern zum Thema Postgeschichte auf. Dr. Federico Borromeo d'adda ist Mitglied in zahlreichen Vereinen, unter anderem bei der AISP (Associazione Italiana di Storia Postale), deren Präsident er seit vielen Jahren ist, Fellow der Royal Philatelie Society, London, des BWI- SC (British West Indies Study Circle), der AEP (Accademie Europeenne de Philatelie), und er ist Gründungsmitglied des,club de Monte Carlo. Im Hinblick auf seine Leidenschaft für die Philatelie hat Dr. Federico Borromeo dadda systematische Forschungen in Archiven und Bibliotheken durchgeführt. Die Forschungsergebnisse veröffentlicht er in zahlreichen Publikationen. wm 4 PhH Special

6 The Biography Federico Borromeo d'adda was born in July 1939 in Rome. He is married and has two sons and two grand-sons. After his primary school in Italy he was educated in Switzerland, in a renowned college, following middle and secondary school. At home nobody was collecting stamps, but turning the clock back, we find in his family a really great collector, Prince Alfonso Doria Pamphili. He passed away in 1913, and bequeathed his fabulous collection to the Royal Philatelic Society of London. He was the father of Federico's grand-mother, and perhaps his grand-mother gave him the first envelope full of stamps purchased at the nearest tobacconist. At first he was fascinated by the exotic stamps showing wild animals, natives in tropical surroundings and the landscapes of far away countries. Soon, advised by a professional philatelist, he started to collect Italian stamps too, forming a real collection and favouring quality and beauty. In addition to philately he had another hobby, photography, dreaming of travelling and taking photographs in those countries which he had seen an his stamps. Actually, while still very young, he became a professional photographer and started to undertake long photographic expeditions, at first in Italy, Greece and Egypt and taking pictures particularly of landscapes, architecture and objects in museums. 7 phic mission in Upper Egypt and Sudan. Later, he travelled extensively, particularly in the East, from Afghanistan to Korea. The outcome was a number of books, many other printed items, and a huge archive of more than 35,000 pictures, in colour and b/w, now managed by specialised agencies in Europe and the United States. As always happens, stamps were set aside for a fairly long time, also because a series of troubled years arrived. Travel was much less frequent, due to a more serious commitment to family affairs, mostly real estate, finance and to a commercial firm in fabrics, particularly silk. When finally things were settled and a less hectic period arrived, the interest in and love for stamps was resumed. The Italy collection, with mint and used stamps as well as sparse Old Italian States covers was sold, retaining only the Roman States. That was the beginning of his serious involvement in philately and postal history, crowned in 1985 with a Large Gold medal for the collection,tariffe postali dello Stato Pontificio (Postal rates of Roman States). It was an innovative collection, showing and explaining all the different rates that it was possible to have under the complex and archaic postal tariff regulations. It was also innovative because the captions, an the collection sheets, were stored in a computer memory and directly printed on them by a dot-matrix printer. Federico sold that collection, particularly because not much more items could be added. The problem now was,what to do. The challenge was in finding a more complex field, philatelically speaking, starting from scratch. The choice feil on the heterogeneous world of the West Indies, where the many islands, large and small, were under the rule of different states, some being colonies and some being independent states, Colonies were under the rule of France, England, Denmark, Holland, Spain and even Sweden, the independent countries being only Haiti and the Dominican Republic. 8 Actually the topic presupposes a wide-ranging approach and study, on an organically developed plan, of all the postal services, and everything connected with them, in the area of the Caribbean islands. This archipelago was the first area of the New World affected by European discovery and subsequent colonisation, and the mail was the only means of communicating with the home countries and the rest of the world, so from the outset it was the subject of particular attention an the part of the various interested powers. The subject had to be treated as chronologically as possible and covered a period from the first known letter with markings that are certainly postal, an entire from Nevis dated 1662, to the end of the 19th century. The primary objective was to offer, for the first time, a concise yet exhaustive overall view of the varied world of the Caribbean, and this was kept in mind in the careful choice of significant issues and documents illustrating the functions of the postal service generally. So every attention was given to highlighting the great variety of postal traditions, which differed in every administration and almost island by island. It is worth pointing out that while the archipelago is geographically homogeneous, it has in the course of the centuries been split up into different and often mutually hostile political entities. All this is reflected in the intentionally-various world of stamp issues that were strongly characterised, so they could be easily distinguished, and in the different rate systems and particular norms of every country. 9 Both have been exhibited an several occasions in Israel, Rome, Ravenna and Washington. As the years go by, other collections have been formed, particularly a very large pre-philatelic collection of the first Kingdom of Italy, in the period when it was under strong French and Napoleonic influence. Also, a pre-philatelic collection of the 18th and 19th century postal history of Alto Adige / South Tyrol, and a collection of letters showing at the back adhesive wafer seals. Borromeo d'adda is also the proud owner of a large postal history library amounting to a good 5,000 items. He is a member of a number of associations, particularly of A.I.S.P. (Associazione Italiana di Storia Postale), of which he has been the president for many years; Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society, London; the B.W.I.S.C. (British West Indies Study Circle); the A.E.P. (Academie Europeenne de Philatelie) and, from the beginning, the Club de Monte Carlo. Side by side with the passion for philately, systematic research in archives and public libraries has been done, the results being a number of books and articles.
