Brown University 2017 Laptop Homework and research Brown University 2016 Laptop Macbook Pro School work Brown University 2017 Laptop Macbook Pro Extremely necessary for college life. Without it, would be in computer lab 24/7 Brown University 2013 Laptop Communicate with family Brown University 2015 Laptop Macbook Pro Most efficient model Brown University 2017 Laptop Take notes in class; research I believe it is a good idea. It would help students, but it can also be a distraction. I believe that it will be a very useful tool. It will help students become more acquainted with technology they will be using in college Very nice, but I think that they should take caution against students abusing their privilege to use technology. These ipads should have some restrictions on them, such as forbidding the student from accessing social networks or other forbidden websites that would distract them from learning. The plan is wonderful, I just hope there is going to be some regulation regarding the use of these ipads. Completely unnecessary, there was an LA Times article indicating why purchasing ipads for LAUSD students was a failure. Please please (as a college match grad who went to these schools) push to use the funding wisely and not for ipads which are expensive. For example, funding should be aimed at after school programs which are actually proved to be successful. An ipad is not the wise way to use valuable funding. I think if used properly, it is a great idea. It will prepare students for college and teach them how to take notes as well as use their resources. I believe that if ipads are provided for the student, they should be monitored and not allowed to take home for the most part. Electronics are a big distraction for youth, including myself, though they are also for educational purposes. Board Member, District 6 1

UNDERGRADUATE Bryn Mawr College 2014 Laptop Macbook Pro Reliability I think it's great. It is a good attempt at making all students technologically literate which is becoming more and more of a necessary skill. Lots of students don't have access to their own technology so this will be great for those who can't afford their own devices. Colby College 2017 Laptop ASUS Affordable; school work I think it will help them learn to use the techonolgy for educational purposes that can be useful in college. I think it's nice but not necessary. It could be a great tool as long as an ipad does not become a major part of the lesson plan and educating the kids. I think a Connecticut College 2014 Laptop PC Familiar with PC software; affordable, child's creativity is better exercised through hands on convenient activities involving manually cutting and pasting and coloring and letting their imagination take over rather than working on a mechanical device that does a lot of these operations for them. I believe this is a necessary initiative that will give Dartmouth College 2012 Laptop Chromebook Affordable; fulfills needs. students the opportunity to thrive, no matter their background. Dartmouth College 2012 Laptop; Tablet Macbook Pro; ipad Quality; Ease of use Dickinson College 2017 Laptop School work Duke University 2016 Laptop Macbook Apple brand Great! I beliebe that is a foolish plan. Kids these days will misuse the ipad and will not serve as an educational I purpose. don't think it will make education better! There are better ways to make education better students will be Board Member, District 6 2

Franklin & Marshall College 2014 Laptop Dell School work, media streaming Franklin & Marshall College 2014 Laptop (Broken); ipad Franklin & Marshall College 2016 Laptop Macbook Pro F&M is a Mac- based campus Students would benefit more from a personal computer (PC) laptop than a tablet. Though the ipad would allow them to do some very much needed things: surf the net for research, take quick notes, check/send s, read articles keep up to date with media, even take surveys and fill out applications- - one important functions that is dire for student success is the ability to write essays. Its arguable that students can write essays on a tablet, but if you have ever tried to write a couple page essay on a tablet it becomes troublesome. Its also horrible having to jump from the typing program to the web browser and back to check out your reference. There are other tablets that have the ability to jot down notes along side of browsing the internet, (tablets that can multi- task / have split screen functionality) but the ipad is not one of them. The ipad screen is a fairly small to replace the comfort of a 12+ in. screen to do any kind of school work. Also we must note that the families of LAUSD students, in general, don't have funds for education (why I'm assuming there is a push to provide students with much needed tools to succeed- - which I think is incredible, thank you!), Apple's products, accessories, and maintenance don't come cheap...i would argue that it would be better to go the route of Windows Surface 2 or another tablet/laptop than an ipad...the Surface is meant to be more of a laptop but it feels like a tablet... I believe this investment would be excellent and Recommended by former college would improve the academics of students because student; meets all requirements: not all students have the funds to buy laptops or they write papers, share documents, print, have to share a single computer in a a household. etc. Providing an ipad for every student would be very helpful. I do not think every student should be provided with an ipad but maybe only the students who are in a special program due to their academic achievements. Board Member, District 6 3

Franklin & Marshall College 2017 Laptop School work Franklin & Marshall College 2017 Laptop; netbook Middlebury College 2016 Laptop Hewlett Packard Gift; extremely useful Occidental College 2015 Laptop Macbook Pro Pomona College 2012 N/A N/A N/A Pomona College 2010 Laptop Pomona College 2011 Laptop ASUS I don not think it is necessary because ipads are more suited for entertainment rather than schoolwork. In my opinion, a tablet like the Surface (microsoft) would be more affordable and practical. School work: papers, reports, etc. I think it is a very good idea because it is convenient Without a computing device, it would and surely, not everyone has a computing device in be more inconvenient and I think that LAUSD so it will help them alot to be able to own one. would affect grades. It will definitely prove useful. A lot of memory; easy to use, carry around; battery lasts 7 hours Replaced desktop computer for college Price, portability and processor, battery life, attractive design I think it is a great idea! I do not think this a good idea because it is a lot of funding and plus I think this will make kids to dependent on modern technology. Also, I think this is problematic because kids will find ways to access the internet and possibly cheat on tests that are done through these ipads. It sounds like a great plan and I think it will benefit students. It has great potential. I think it's important, though, to inform parents the value of having the ipad instead of focusing on the device itself. I'm not sure how much educational benefit can be derived from an investment of this scale. However, I admit that I am not currently well- informed of this plan. Waste of resources that can be better spent elsewhere. Ipads have limited capabilities to use for educational purposes. They are better suited for recreational uses. Board Member, District 6 4

I don't understand why such an expensive device would help the students. There are places like libraries to access the internet or a computer and the Pomona College 2015 Laptop Portability schools can and have been outfitted with these resources too. As for the issue of carrying textbooks or programs, ultimately the student could learn more with a pencil and paper because it helps people memorize and interact better. I'd like to look at the finances of it all before making a Pomona College 2017 Laptop Sony VAIO Gift judgement. However, I do think that while the ipads are a good educational tool, they may also end up being a distraction. Pomona College 2013 Laptop Macbook Pro Ease of use; College software Great! Should cut down costs of books. They are expensive... I think that it's a waste of money and a poor investment overall in an attempt to improve education through technology. I think that the use of Princeton University 2017 Laptop Microsoft Prefer Microsoft products technology is beneficial, but it can also be distracting while in class. Providing an ipad takes away funding from things that actually matter, such as funding for field trips and projects / resources. It would create an interactive learning environment Santa Clara University 2014 Laptop Taking notes for the children. It also helps students with problems with focus to have an organized structure of learning. I feel like it's a waste. They should help with installing Skidmore College 2017 Laptop Hewlett Packard Music; school work; DVD drive computers in school. There is a higher chance students will break an ipad that they own over a computer at school. No, because it's a waste of money and I think the money towards laptops instead is better because a Smith College 2017 Laptop Macbook Pro Dislike Windows 8 laptop can do so much more than an ipad. You should consider using the money for the ipads to replace all the old PC computers because they are old, slow, and not useful. Smith College 2013 Laptop Toshiba Affordability, convenience Might be too much. A simple laptop would suffice. Board Member, District 6 5

Stanford University 2015 Laptop Macbook Pro Write papers, research, Berkeley Berkeley Berkeley Irvine San Diego 2012 Laptop Toshiba Gift 2016 Laptop Macbook Pro Popularity 2012 Laptop Toshiba Gift 2015 Laptop; Tablet 2017 Laptop Dell School work - Useful; online class material I think that the money would be better spent if it was invested in improving the quality of teachers/ counselors at LAUSD schools, providing students with better arts, sports, and college preparatory programs, and giving more nutritious food to students. To me, these are more pressing issues than providing all students with ipads as ipads will not solve the educational problems of LAUSD. However, I think having an ipad for students would be beneficial for students to have in the classroom. But, they should not be used to replace textbooks. Though ipads are more eco- friendly and can be used in the classrooms, having students take ipad's home to study from may come at a high cost. In short, throwing money or technology at a problem won't solve the structural issues of the education system! What plan? At first glance, seems imprudent. Come on, kindergarteners and elementary kids slapping away at and slapping things with the ipad. I think that's great but will students be responsible and use it only for school purposes? Seems like a waste of money, but I don't know how the ipads will be used to ameliorate the students' education. There should be an outline or something that tells me how they'll be used, but then again I don't invest any time reading up on this since I don't see how this affects me. It's a good approach to help students in their education. Great. Are they really going to help students in their education? Board Member, District 6 6

Santa Barbara Los Angeles Los Angeles University of Southern California University of Southern California 2010 Laptop Portable, keyboard for writing papers, other school work 2010 Laptop Macbook Pro Necessary for everyday use 2013 Laptop Macbook Air Performance, design, ease of use 2016 Laptop Note taking; paper writing; internet research 2016 Laptop; ipad Easy to carry around; accessible On the one hand, I think the plan is keeping up with the demands of technology and will teach kids how to use the system. On the other hand, I also think that the security settings need to be more secure because students are able to get through the security settings where they can have access to the internet preventing them from focusing on learning and just surfing social media etc. I think that's that a wonderful idea as long as Teachers are being developed to use them appropriately within the classroom. Additionally, as long as schools have the network to support wifi use. Not entirely necessary. I believe that the money could have been used in other areas. Technology is only a small part in the success of student performance and learning. Too much money is being spent on this technology that will be outdated in a few months or years. I don't see the benefits in it. I think it will just take away a student's ambition to learn for themselves. Unless the ipad s limited to certain applications, the students will always find a way to distract themselves with the device instead of paying attention to the lecture. I believe that this is a bad idea. The district is spending money on these ipads that are most likely not going to be used for educational reasons. I personally have gone a semester using only my ipad, and no hardcopy textbooks, and felt that I struggled more than if I would have had the textbook. Having an ipad does not mean that the students will have access to the internet at home, which will lead to a problem with homework. Wellesley College 2015 Laptop School work It is extremely helpful in terms of class so yes. Board Member, District 6 7

Wellesley College 2014 Laptop Macbook Pro Software for CS classes I like that LAUSD is providing students with these resources. Yale University 2016 Laptop Macbook Pro Quality product; popular on campus I think only kids who work hard should have the privilege as an incentive!!! Why give it to the kids who won't actually benefit from it because they don't want to work? I made it through public school without an ipad because I worked hard! The ipad won't make a difference to those who don't deserve it. Yale University 2012 Laptop Macbook Gift Don't do it. Board Member, District 6 8
