3 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS LNG 550 Remedial English Course for Post Graduate Students 2 (1 2 6) This course aims to instill the background language and skills necessary for undertaking LNG 600 and to raise the students confidence in using English. There will be no predetermined focus of the course, but instead it will concentrate on those areas where the students are weakest and need most improvement. The classroom teaching and learning will be supported by self-directed learning to allow the students to improve their language and skills autonomously. LNG 600 Insessional English Course for Post Graduate Students 3 (2 2 9) Prerequisite: LNG 550 Remedial English Course for Post Graduate Students or Pass grade from placement procedure This course aims to develop English language skills relevant to mature students in Graduate Degree Programmes in Engineering, Science and Technology. It will be based on practical skills, but will not be yet another grammar course. Rather its focus will be on the real language demands, particularly in reading and writing, faced by students in the course of their studies. It is project-focussed and simulates the stages in preparing and presenting research, from finding references to writing a final draft. The course will equip students with language learning strategies to facilitate ongoing autonomous learning and will emphasize language use not usage, real communication not classroom practice. BIS 601 Requirements Analysis for Business Information System 3 (3 0 9) Requirements analysis and management, analyzing problems, business modeling, understanding users needs, interviewing, brainstorming, prototyping, system specification, organizing requirements information, managing scope, refined requirements specification and target system definition, quality measurement of requirements specification, building the right system, validation and verification, managing change, and requirements tracking. Laying the technological foundations for conducting commercial activities through electronic means, business aspect of electronic business, e-business models and online monetary transactions, skills required for implementing a selected system solution, wireless technology, the use of markup, host, scripting languages, server based computing, outsourcing and application service provision, and mobile e-commerce. The adjustment of marketing strategies needed to enter and remain competitive in the Internet environment, the managerial decision making involved in four primary areas: communication, selling, providing content, and providing a network function, Internet tools and technology, web site development, product and pricing strategies, distribution and direct marketing, mobile market, marketing communications, online communities and relationship marketing. BIS 605 Web-based Application Development 3 (3 0 9) Concepts in programming web application servers, the fundamental architectural elements of programming and executing high performance, high reliability, shared applications with hands-on experience in developing web-based applications, assignments using an advanced application development/execution environment, Request/Response Protocols (HTTP/HTML/XML), data and functional partitioning, replication, load balancing, failure detection, specification of applications, synchronization, recovery, threads, performance evaluation, and programming technology. Introduction to computer networks, transmission media, local asynchronous communication, long distance communication, packet transmission, frame, error detection, LAN and WAN technologies, network topology, network peripherals, routing, serviced paradigm, protocol, layering, internetworking, internet protocol (IP), IP datagram, IP encapsulation, fragmentation, client/server interaction, network application, network security and privacy.

BIS 634 Human Computer Interaction 3 (3 0 9) Problems solving by making computer-based systems easier to use and more useful for people and organizations, an overview and introduction to the field of human-computer interaction as it applies to electronic business, navigation through the Web and online information systems, people's goals and experiences in shopping, maintaining relationships, communicating and gathering information, tools and techniques for creating or improving e-business sites, contextual inquiry, heuristics and an understanding of systematic procedures for creating usable and useful e-business designs and systems, good e-business interface design, and a method of developing an effective e-business site.
