2 3 BASIC COMPONENTS 1 Tracking software - Located at a base station where an operator can observe all of the vehicles movements in real time, STRANDTrac system s use industry leading RASTRAC software from Manning Navcomp. Although it is only one link in the chain of components required to track a vehicle in real time, the software is arguably the most important. It is the component which indicates to the operator where the vehicle is, which direction it is heading, how fast it is moving and much more. RASTRAC software allows the operator to graphically display a vehicles position overlaid on a map while simultaneously viewing a text based list detailing user defined parameters about each vehicle. Some features of RASTRAC software include; Standard Windows interface and menus. Observe your vehicle(s) movements in real time. Display vehicles overlaid on map(s) of your choice. Vehicles icon and/or trail can change automatically based upon information about the vehicle. Automatically store vehicle movements and information in a wide range of formats including Microsoft Access and Excel. Request an immediate vehicle position update at any time. Record and playback stored data using VCR type controls, real time, fast forward, rewind etc. Filter & analyze stored tracking data and print reports based upon criteria of your choosing. Easily import and calibrate your own raster based maps including.bmp,.jpg,.gif,.tif &.pcx. Alert operator if a vehicle enters or leaves a pre-defined area. Inform operator if a vehicles position is not being updated or is constant for long periods. Supports multiple operators who can customize and save software settings based upon their individual preferences. MULTIPLE BASE S Computers running RASTRAC software can share tracking data amongst each other. Utilizing the internet, tracking data can be made available to any computer connected to the web. MOBILE BASE A laptop computer with RASTRAC software can be connected to a radio transceiver mounted in a vehicle. This will create a mobile base station which can track any other vehicle within range.

3 3 BASIC COMPONENTS 2 G.P.S. receiver and antenna - This piece of hardware is mounted on each vehicle that is to be tracked. It's function is to extrapolate and output the vehicles position based upon the data it receives from 24 orbiting G.P.S. satellites. 3 and antenna - Also mounted on each vehicle that is to be tracked, the transceiver is responsible for transmitting the G.P.S. positioning data from the vehicle to the tracking software and receiving any instructions from the software. There are many different types of transceivers, some even include the G.P.S. receiver eliminating the need for a separate piece of hardware. s can also include inputs and outputs allowing the operator of the tracking software to monitor additional vehicle parameters and even control some of them. STRANDTrac systems employ two basic types of transceivers; VHF/UHF Radio - Generally used in remote areas where there is no cellular communications infrastructure. Range from the vehicle to base can vary greatly but depending upon the terrain, is typically about 30 kilometers. One transceiver is required for each vehicle to be tracked and an additional transceiver is required at the base station where the tracking software is installed. Although radio transceivers are initially more expensive than cell based units, there are no ongoing charges. Various frequencies are available. REPEATERS Autonomous stationary repeaters can greatly extend the range of radio based systems. Powered by a small battery and optional solar panel. Satellite - This type of transceiver is unique in that the positioning data is transmitted to it's own satellite which in turn forwards the data to a ground station. The tracking software accesses the positioning data via the internet thereby eliminating the need for a transceiver at the base station. The range of this type of hardware is virtually unlimited. As with a cellular system, there will be ongoing charges based upon the amount and frequency of the positioning data being transmitted. : A communications device capable of both transmitting and receiving.
