Baseline Study To identify current practices with regard teaching and learning the challenges faced by teachers and their needs why recent projects have maybe not had the widespread impact they had the potential to achieve. detailed online questionnaire completed by 1,900 teachers from across the country focus groups interviews
General Findings narrow range of teaching and learning approaches lecture (dominant), hands-on, multimedia, experiment games used a narrow range of resources, with many using the IPST textbook and accompanying teachers guide rarely taught science in context, although some did stimulate interest through the use of news and YouTube They did use the 5E model, but found it challenging due to time constraints, they often did not complete all 5 stages, or changed their original 5E focussed lesson plan did use inquiry approaches, but found it inappropriate for some topics and would thus use a lecture approach tended to teach the Nature of Science in a didactic way, as needed to concentrate on the science content
Challenges and Problems developing students thinking skills and creativity lack of teaching resources to help them put the philosophies into practice in their classrooms teaching science through the medium of English they needed resources to help them to achieve this a lack of science equipment for whole class practical activities.
Implementation Challenges when they returned to their schools they would have to develop their own resources when they had used the exemplars provided on the training they found this challenging due to other pressures they were working in isolation in their school there was little or no follow-up support when teaching resources were provided they did not have the equipment needed for some of the experiments; therefore they would eventually give up
Key components Sustainable support for science teaching and learning Capacity Building Development of Teaching Resources
