4 Brunei Darussalam: Introduction Relatively a small country, small population, very peaceful country 7 ethnic races (Brunei Malay, Kedayan, Tutong, Dusun, Belait, Bisaya, Murut, ) Rich linguistic diversity of languages and local dialects Malay Language Official language English Language medium of instruction in in schools widely use in business Development of strong oral tradition among its people

5 Brunei Darussalam welfare free medical Free education from primary schools to tertiary education for its citizens Education is taught both in Malay and English. The official language is Bahasa Melayu or Malay and English is widely used in offices and education.

6 Education Pre school and lower primary schools are taught in both Malay and English Language including Chinese in Chinese schools Upper primary, secondary and higher institution and tertiary education taught in English. Religious schools are taught both in Malay and Arabic languages, English is an additional subject Chinese schools would be taught in Malay, English and Chinese.

7 Continuation : Brunei Malay is widely used and standard Malay is used in teaching in schools English Language is the second, third and can be the fourth language for Bruneians. Therefore teaching language can be very challenging to teachers.

9 English Language teachers Language teachers are made up of locals who are trained in TESL either from University Brunei Darussalam or United Kingdom contract teachers from Malaysia, India also supplied by Centre for British Teachers (United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa)

10 Teacher s education and professional qualification Local teachers : 1. Majority trained in English Language either locally at University Brunei Darussalam or from well known Universities in United Kingdom 2. Where first degree is not in Education, teachers do three semester program in Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Or 3. Teachers pursue a Masters in Teaching Programme at UBD or oversea in relevant fields.

11 Contract Teachers 24 contract teachers from Malaysia (5), United Kingdom(2), Australia(1), New Zealand (1) and India (15). are Well qualified and very experienced have vast teaching experience in their country of origin and they are very committed and dedicated towards their profession in Brunei Darussalam.

12 Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) fully qualified from universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or Ireland); with at least 3 years of experience (2 in primary) and relevant exposure to students for whom English is a second or foreign language. On top of this, many have extra qualifications and experience which compliment the new SPN21 assessments and resource development. Many are contributing their ideas and effort in SiGs Special Interest Groups for BCATS, materials development Committee, Lower Secondary English Reading Project just to name a few. At least 4 CfBT teachers are on regular SCOPE program which runs throughout the year since 2006.

13 Teacher s Competency The Department of Schools in collaboration with Human Resource Department,Department of Examinations, Department of Curriculum Development and Department of Insspectorate have taken a lot of initiatives in providing professional support to local teachers both at Primary and Secondary levels to raise their level of competency in their teaching. CfBT teachers and managers also provide a range of capacity building inputs for CfBT and Bruneian teachers, in line with CfBT s contract with the MoE. Customised SEAMEO RELC (Regional English Language Centre) workshops were run locally for at least 30 teachers from Primary and 30 Secondary schools at one time and cost effective. Workshops are customized according to the Brunei s needs. Moreover, these teachers in turn become facilitators for cascading sharing sessions. As a result, more teachers are able to enhance their knowledge in different areas
