1 DON ROSS EAGLE Mr. N. Pascuzzi, Principal Ms. L. Stare, Clerical Assistant Ms. R. Ross, Vice Principal Ms. J. Sutherland, Clerical Assistant Dear Parents: November 7, 2013 November is an especially busy month for students as class projects and assignments are due as we near the close of Term One of our school year. Exams and review quizzes are also quite common during this time of year as teachers begin to tabulate a wide array of assessments for the upcoming report cards which will be mailed out to parents on November 28th. As we near the completion of our first term it is noteworthy that this is perhaps the most important point in the year to discuss course work with your teen. Which areas are going well? Which are not? What plans do we need, as a family, to put together to ensure success and maximize learning in each course? Research tells us that parent support is the single most important factor in a teen's success at school. And let's not forget all of the fun extracurricular activities that take place regularly at Don Ross Secondary. Our school hosted the Championship Cross Country Meet in late October featuring over 200 participants from North Shore schools; and our Volleyball Team s are wrapping up league play with a tournaments today. Basketball season is getting underway for both grade 8 and 9 students, and intramural volleyball which focus on fun competition for all students during noon hour are in full gear. The next big event for our school is the Indoor Track Meet. If you haven't yet experienced an Indoor Track Meet and the excitement it generates, drop by the school on Friday, Nov. 30th. Our Grade 9 Leadership class is also busy planning fun events for our school as well as important fundraising initiatives to support worthy causes in our community. Please check on our Dates to Remember notice below including a November 19 Issues in Adolescence Workshop. Sincerely, Nick Pascuzzi Principal DATES TO REMEMBER November 11 November 13 November 14 November 18 November 19 November 28 November 28 November 29 Remembrance Day observed-school Not in Session Grade 8 Beginning Band Concert MPR School Dance 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Last Day to Hand in Assignments before Term 1 Report Cards Community Parent Information Meeting Issues in Adolescence Workshop 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Report Cards Mailed Home Indoor Track Meet Decorating 3:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Indoor Track Meet Ross Road, PO BOX 299 Brackendale, BC, V0N 1H tel / fax Address: 1st letter of their first name AND full lastname@sd48.bc.ca i.e. npascuzzi@sd48.bc.ca

8 Keeping Parents Up To Date SIGN IN/OUT PROCEDURES Please ensure that when your child is late coming to school that they SIGN IN at the office and acquire a late slip. Also, please also be aware that your child cannot SIGN OUT without a parent s permission which can come in the form of a phone call ( ), to either Ms. Stare (lstare@sd48.bc.ca) or Ms. Sutherland (jsutherland@sd48.bc.ca) or a plain old-fashioned note. Failure to follow the above will result in a pesky phone call from our Synervoice sytem. Our monthly newsletters and daily announcements are available through and on our website: If your home information changes during the school year, please contact the office to enable us to keep your child s records up to date. Messages to Students and Homework Requests We appreciate that at times there may be a spur of the moment messages that needs to be relayed to students, however we encourage students and parents to relay non-emergency information during home time, not during school hours. The office is a very busy place and delivery of messages cannot be guaranteed, however students definitely have access to the office phones during times of emergency and/or illness. If your child is ill and calling home for a ride, please ensure you speak to either Ms. Stare or Ms. Sutherland in our office, so that we may sign your child out. Homework Requests Please note that a first-day absence does not require a homework request students are advised to check in with their teachers to find out what they missed. If your child is away for a second day you can his/her teachers directly. Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices Cell phones can be of great benefit to parents and students, however they can also be a major distraction in the classroom setting. Cell phones are prohibited in classrooms unless a teacher indicates that students can bring them to class to be used for educational purposes. Students are to leave cell phones in their lockers. Social cell phone use is only allowed during breaks and at lunch. Failure to follow cell phone guidelines may result in cell phones being confiscated and turned into the office. The first time a phone is confiscated, the student may pick up his/her phone from the office at the end of the day. Second and subsequent cell phone confiscations may require a parent to retrieve the phone. Cell phone cameras and video devices are not to be used to photograph or record other students or staff without obtaining their permission first.

10 A Day of Remembrance Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War ( ), the Second World War ( ), and the Korean War ( ), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace. In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD ( ) Canadian Army In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. WHY THE POPPY? The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders Fields on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle. The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The first poppies were distributed in Canada in Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward helping ex-servicemen and women buy food, and obtain shelter and medical attention.
