Cooperative Games (for open classroom spaces) K.1.5 b Balloon Volleyball Hang four pieces of yarn from the ceiling to the floor--two for each goal at the ends of an open area of the classroom--about 1.5 m apart. Two students from each team face-off (teacher drops the balloon above their heads) taking turns trying to hit the balloon through the opponent s yarn goal. The idea is to have one person in net cooperating with the other forward. Each four player shift lasts 2 mins. RULES: players must contact the balloon with only one hand. Audience may cheer but act as a statue when the balloon comes their way. Play these games in the classroom. Use ID tags (worn or given out on a paper slip) around a theme such as responsibilities. If you have a class of 20, randomly hand out 10 different responsibilties to each of the two teams. Then introduce each team by asking, say, the pencil sharpeners to come out. The best actor gets points for her/his team. Introduce the rest. The rest of these games are played the same way. Sometimes two tags from a team are called to compete against the other two from the opponent s side. Perhaps keep points. Stand-Up Each class member picks a partner and sits on the floor back to back, legs out straight, arm locked in arm with partner. The object is to be the first pair to stand-up without losing the arm-lock position. RULES: player s hands must not touch the floor for balance SECRET TIP: It is instinctive to move your body forward as you would by yourself. The trick in cooperating here is to do the opposite; push back and against your partner with equal pressure in order to slowly rise together. Taxi In two teams of two (a team being one member sitting cross-legged, and the other standing-- pushing the back of the sitter), each taxi pair competes against the other in being the first to leave the garage (behind a chair) on their scooter-board; make it through the pile-on obstacle course; and park the taxi in the garage. RULES: If the taxi upsets, they must regain their proper sitting-standing positioning before proceeding further. NOTE: If your school doesn t have this equipment, research samples at sites like scooter boards and pile-ons. Working Together The Chair Game Place two chairs in the middle of the floor back to back. Bring out a member from each of the two teams to sit in the chairs backs against the backs of the chairs feet on the floor. When the go is given, each person races around the world (around the two chairs--once) to come back home. The first to be back in their chair (backs and feet positioned properly) wins. COOPERATIVE: two or three players race on each team, one on the chair, the other two on the laps of those under them. Come back to the same order of sitting. Try going around twice. Try just getting to the opponent s chair.

Responsibility Song K.1.5 c (The tune of Frere Jacques. Change any words to match the syllables) Verse #1 pet (eg. dog) I m responsible; I m responsible For the (name a pet); for the Feeding, cleaning, walking; feeding, cleaning, walking That s my job, that s my job. Verse #2 household (eg. floors) I m responsible; I m responsible For the (name a household job); for the Sweeping, washing, cleaning; sweeping, washing, cleaning That s my job, that s my job. Verse #3 school (eg. books) I m responsible; I m responsible For the (name a school job); for the Cleaning, sorting, placing; cleaning, sorting, placing That s my job, that s my job. Verse #4 school (eg. lining up) I m responsible; I m responsible For (name a school job); for Listening, waiting, smiling; listening, waiting, smiling That s my job, that s my job.

Remembrance Day Poems K.1.6 a In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - John McCrae (page 1 of 3)

Remembrance Day Poems K.1.6 a Poppy We are but children small, We are too little to do it all. Children you may do your part. Love each other is how you start. Play without fighting. Share your games and toys. Be kind and thoughtful, To all girls and boys. Remembrance Day We wear a poppy On Remembrance Day, And at eleven We stand and pray. Wreaths are put Upon a grave. As we remember Our soldiers brave. (page 2 of 3)

Remembrance Day Poems K.1.6 a Little Poppy Little poppy Given to me, Help me keep Canada Safe and free. I'll wear a little poppy, As red as red can be, To show that I remember Those who fought for me. Are You Sleeping? (to the tune of Frère Jacques ) See the poppies See the poppies Oh so red Oh so red Growing on the hillside Growing on the hillside Soldiers lay dead Soldiers lay dead We remember We remember On this day On this day Soldiers on the hillside Soldiers on the hillside Far away Far away From: (page 3 of 3)

Sample Letter About a Remembrance Day Ceremony K.1.6 c2 Remembrance Day As Remembrance Day approaches our kindergarten class will begin to have discussions and activities to learn about this very special holiday. It would be helpful in my class discussions to know if there are any military personnel in the students family or if there are any veterans from WWI, WWII, Korean War, etc present in the family tree. Would you or someone in your family like to share an experience about this? It is difficult for kindergarten children to think about a concept that is somewhat abstract for them and any personal connection would make it more meaningful. Please send a note in your child s agenda with any family history that you think would be helpful. You could also stop by for a chat, catch me at the end of the day or call me at the school ( ) to share your information. If you have any questions or concerns about this topic and your child please contact me. Our school will be holding a school wide Liturgy on Thursday, November 8, 2007 in the big gym at 9:00am to remember and give thanks for our veterans and those men and women that have served in war. It will also be a time to pray for those that are currently engaged in wars or peacekeeping missions and the people of those war-torn countries. We would welcome parents and/or family members that would like to join us at that time. Many thanks, Ms./Mr

Sample Cover Letter and Interview Questions K.2.2 Different Types of Work: Home Assignment Today your child is bringing home this bag with a very special job asked of them. They need to interview someone in their family about their job and the type of work they do. This is important because the students in kindergarten are learning about the people around them, what they do and why this is important. This helps to shape them as they grow and begin to see their importance in their family, school and community. They are keen and excited for this challenge and will be very proud to bring back this information and share with their classmates! Please help your child with the reading and writing that will be required to record information but please write down the answers in their words. Take this opportunity to share with your child and enjoy the questions they might think to ask. If there is anything else you would (or they would) like to add please feel free to write on the back of the form Would you please take two pictures of your child and the person they choose to interview on the camera provided in this bag and then return this package to school tomorrow. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at school or Thank you in advance, Mrs./Mr.
